A Service-Oriented Foundation for Big Data

This paper provides a service-oriented foundation for big data. The foundation has two parts. Part 1 reveals 10 big characteristics of big data. Part 2 presents a service-oriented framework for big data. The framework has fundamental, technological, and socio-economic levels. The fundamental level has four big fundamental characteristics of big data: big volume, big velocity, big variety, and big veracity. The technological level consists of three big technological characteristics of big data: Big intelligence, big analytics, big infrastructure. The socioeconomic level has three big socioeconomic characteristics of big data: big service, big value, and big market. The article looks at each level of the proposed framework from a service-oriented perspective. The multi-level framework will help organizations and researchers understand how the 10 big characteristics relate to big opportunities, big challenges, and big impacts arising from big data. The proposed approach in this paper might facilitate the research and development of big data, big data analytics, business intelligence, and business analytics.

The big data includes the enormous flow of data from variety of applications that does not fit into the traditional data base. They deal with the storing, managing and manipulating of the data acquired from various sources at an alarming rate to gather valuable insights from it. The big data analytics is used provide with the new and better ideas that pave way to the improvising of the business strategies with its broader, deeper insights and frictionless actions that leads to an accurate and reliable systems. The paper proposes the big data analytics for the improving the strategic assets in the health care industry by providing with the better services for the patients, gaining the satisfaction of the patients and enhancing the customer relationship.

This chapter focuses on Big Data and its relation with Service-Oriented Architecture. We start with the introduction to Big Data Trends in recent times, how data explosion is not only faced by web and retail networks but also the enterprises. The notorious “V's” – Variety, volume, velocity and value can cause a lot of trouble. We emphasize on the fact that Big Data is much more than just size, the problem that we face today is neither the amount of data that is created nor its consumption, but the analysis of all those data. In our next step, we describe what service-oriented architecture is and how SOA can efficiently handle the increasingly massive amount of transactions. Next, we focus on the main purpose of SOA here is to meaningfully interoperate, trade, and reuse data between IT systems and trading partners. Using this Big Data scenario, we investigate the integration of Services with new capabilities of Enterprise Architectures and Management. This has had varying success but it remains the dominant mode for data integration as data can be managed with higher flexibility.

The term big data has come due to rapid generation of data in various organizations. In big data, the big is the buzzword. Here the data are so large and complex that the traditional database applications are not able to process (i.e., they are inadequate to deal with such volume of data). Usually the big data are described by 5Vs (volume, velocity, variety, variability, veracity). The big data can be structured, semi-structured, or unstructured. Big data analytics is the process to uncover hidden patterns, unknown correlations, predict the future values from large and complex data sets. In this chapter, the following topics will be covered more in detail. History of big data and business analytics, big data analytics technologies and tools, and big data analytics uses and challenges.

Intelligent analytics is an emerging paradigm in the age of big data, analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI). This chapter explores the nature of intelligent analytics. More specifically, this chapter identifies the foundations, cores, and applications of intelligent big data analytics based on the investigation into the state-of-the-art scholars' publications and market analysis of advanced analytics. Then it presents a workflow-based approach to big data analytics and technological foundations for intelligent big data analytics through examining intelligent big data analytics as an integration of AI and big data analytics. The chapter also presents a novel approach to extend intelligent big data analytics to intelligent analytics. The proposed approach in this chapter might facilitate research and development of intelligent analytics, big data analytics, business analytics, business intelligence, AI, and data science.

Big Data Analytics has changed the way organizations make decisions, manage business processes, and create new products and services. Business analytics is the use of data, information technology, statistical analysis, and quantitative methods and models to support organizational decision making and problem solving. The main categories of business analytics are descriptive analytics, predictive analytics, and prescriptive analytics. Big Data is data that exceeds the processing capacity of conventional database systems and is typically defined by three dimensions known as the Three V's: Volume, Variety, and Velocity. Big Data brings big challenges. Big Data not only has influenced the analytics that are utilized but also has affected technologies and the people who use them. At the same time Big Data brings challenges, it presents opportunities. Those who embrace Big Data and effective Big Data Analytics as a business imperative can gain competitive advantage.

Organizations face both opportunities and risks with big data analytics vendors, and the risks are now profound, as data has been likened to the oil of the digital era. The growing body of research at the nexus of big data analytics and cloud computing is examined from the economic perspective, based on agency theory (AT). A conceptual framework is developed for analyzing these opportunities and challenges regarding the use of big data analytics and cloud computing in e-business environments. This framework allows organizations to engage in contracts that target competitive parity with their service-oriented decision support system (SODSS) to achieve a competitive advantage related to their core business model. A unique contribution of this paper is its perspective on how to engage a vendor contractually to achieve this competitive advantage. The framework provides insights for a manager in selecting a vendor for cloud-based big data services.

Background: Change is inevitable and as supply chain managers prepare for the future they face many challenges. Two major trends over the last few years are the growing importance of ‘big data’ and analysing these data though ‘analytics’. The data contain much value and companies need to capitalise on the variety of data sources by in-depth and proper analysis through the use of ‘big data’ analytics.Objective: This article endeavours to highlight the evolving nature of the supply chain management (SCM) environment, to identify how the two major trends (‘big data’ and analytics) will impact SCM in future, to show the benefits that can be derived if these trends are embraced and to make recommendations to supply chain managers.Method: The importance of extracting value from the huge amounts of data available in the SCM area is stated. ‘Big data’ and analytics are defined and the impact of these in various SCM applications clearly illustrated.Results: It is shown, through examples, how the SCM area can be impacted by these new trends and developments. In these examples ‘big data’ analytics have already been embraced, used and implemented successfully. Big data is a reality and using analytics to extract value from the data has the potential to make a huge impact.Conclusion: It is strongly recommended that supply chain managers take note of these two trends, since better use of ‘big data’ analytics can ensure that they keep abreast with developments and changes which can assist in enhancing business competitiveness.
