This paper constructs a dyadic non-subsampled Contourlet transform for denoising on the image, the transformation has more directional subband, using the non-subsampled filter group for decompositing of direction, so has the translation invariance, eliminated image distortion from Contourlet transform’s lack of translation invariance. Non-subsampled filter reduces noise interference and data redundancy. Using the feature of NSCT translation invariance, multiresolution, multi-direction, and can according to the energy of NSCT in all directions and in all scale, adaptive denoising threshold. Experimental results show that compared to wavelet denoising and traditional Contourlet denoising, the method achieves a higher PSNR value, while preserving image edge details, can effectively reduce the Gibbs distortion, improve visual images.

In this paper, we develop a novel linear singularity representation method using spatial K-neighbor block-extraction and Haar transform (BEH). Block-extraction provides a group of image blocks with similar (generally smooth) backgrounds but different image edge locations. An interblock Haar transform is then used to represent these differences, thus achieving a linear singularity representation. Next, we magnify the weak detailed coefficients of BEH to allow for image enhancement. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better image enhancement, compared to block-matching and 3D filtering (BM3D), nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT), and guided image filtering.

This paper aims to develop a method of crack grid detection based on convolutional neural network. First, an image denoising operation is conducted to improve image quality. Next, the processed images are divided into grids of different, and each grid is fed into a convolutional neural network for detection. The pieces of the grids with cracks are marked and then returned to the original images. Finally, on the basis of the detection results, threshold segmentation is performed only on the marked grids. Information about the crack parameters is obtained via pixel scanning and calculation, which realises complete crack detection. The experimental results show that 30×30 grids perform the best with the accuracy value of 97.33%. The advantage of automatic crack grid detection is that it can avoid fracture phenomenon in crack identification and ensure the integrity of cracks.

Noise removal in medical images remains a challenge for the researchers because noise removal introduces artifacts and blurring of the image. Developing medical image denoising algorithm is a difficult operation because a tradeoff between noise reduction and the preservation of actual features of image has to be made in a way that enhances and preserves the diagnostically relevant image content. A special member of the emerging family of multiscale geometric transforms is the contourlet transform which effectively captures the image edges and contours. This overcomes the limitations of the existing method of denoising using wavelet and curvelet. But due to down sampling and up sampling, the contourlet transform is shift-variant. However, shift-invariance is desirable in image analysis applications such as edge detection, contour characterization, and image enhancement. In this chapter, nonsubsampled contourlet transform (shift-invariance transform)-based denoising is presented which more effectively represents edges than contourlet transform.

The locust slice images have all the features such as strong self-similarity, piecewise smoothness and nonlinear texture structure. Multi-scale interpolation operator is an effective tool to describe such structures, but it cannot overcome the influence of noise on images. Therefore, this research designed the Shannon–Cosine wavelet which possesses all the excellent properties such as interpolation, smoothness, compact support and normalization, then constructing multi-scale wavelet interpolative operator, the operator can be applied to decompose and reconstruct the images adaptively. Combining the operator with the local filter operator (mean and median), a multi-scale Shannon–Cosine wavelet denoising algorithm based on cell filtering is constructed in this research. The algorithm overcomes the disadvantages of multi-scale interpolation wavelet, which is only suitable for describing smooth signals, and realizes multi-scale noise reduction of locust slice images. The experimental results show that the proposed method can keep all kinds of texture structures in the slice image of locust. In the experiments, the locust slice images with mixture noise of Gaussian and salt–pepper are taken as examples to compare the performances of the proposed method and other typical denoising methods. The experimental results show that the Peak Signal-To-Noise Ratio (PSNR) of the denoised images obtained by the proposed method is greater 27.3%, 24.6%, 2.94%, 22.9% than Weiner filter, wavelet transform method, median and average filtering, respectively; and the Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) for measuring image quality is greater 31.1%, 31.3%, 15.5%, 10.2% than other four methods, respectively. As the variance of Gaussian white noise increases from 0.02 to 0.1, the values of PSNR and SSIM obtained by the proposed method only decrease by 11.94% and 13.33%, respectively, which are much less than other 4 methods. This shows that the proposed method possesses stronger adaptability.
