Mill-grinding experiments were carried out on SiCp/Al to investigate effects of mill-grinding parameters and grinding wheel parameters on machined surface roughness in this paper. The machined surface topography was also analyzed. Experimental results show that surface roughness increases with increasing feed rate and the depth of the mill-grinding. The effect of mill-grinding speed on surface roughness is low. The machined surface reveals many defects. The fine grit diamond grinding wheel can reduce the surface roughness and decrease the machined surface defect. Compared to the vitrified bonded diamond and electroplated diamond grinding wheels used in the experiment, the resin-based diamond grinding wheel produces a better surface.

In order to investigate the influence of dressing methods on grinding temperature, two kinds of diamond grinding wheels dressed by traditional dressing(TD) and elliptic ultrasonic vibration dressing(ED) respectively were used to grind the same nano-ceramic material. Through grinding experiments, the comparative analysis of the grinding temperature was conducted. The results show that diamond grinding wheel dressed by elliptical ultrasonic vibration method can decrease the grinding temperature.

Surface roughness in a turning operation is affected by a great number of factors. Two of the most important factors are feed rate and the size of the corner radius. Surface roughness can be roughly determined to increase with the square of the feed rate and decrease with increased size of the corner radius. However, wiper insert geometries changed this relationship with the capability to generate good surface roughness at relatively higher feeds by transferring small part of the round insert edges into the straight cutting edges of the pointed insert. The principle of how wiper inserts behave different from conventional inserts as to the effects on the surface roughness is explored in this paper. Experimental study of the surface roughness produced in the turning of hardened mild steels using coated carbide tools with both conventional and wiper inserts is conducted. The test results prove the effectiveness of the wiper inserts in providing excellent surface roughness. The results also suggest that the use of the wiper insert is an effective way that significantly increases cutting efficiency without changing the machined surface roughness in high feed turning operations.

To improve the self-sharpening ability and increase clearance for debris of metal bonded diamond grinding wheel, the porosity structure is applied to the diamond grinding wheel in this paper. By selecting different inducers diamond composites are burned under appropriate agglomeration condition. The experiment results indicate that diamond composites obtained through two certain inducers can meet both the demand of pore-creating and intensity, so can be used to make wheels. This conclusion lays a foundation for further study.

In this paper, experiments are conducted to study the characters of Ultrasonic Assisted Grinding (UAG) and Conventional Grinding (CG), diamond grinding wheel is used in experiments, grinding forces and surface roughness are measured in both UAG and CG. The effects of different parameters on grinding force, surface roughness and force ratio are discussed. The results show that the grinding force and surface roughness in UAG is smaller than those in CG. The force ratio in UAG is lower than that in CG, which reveals that the grinding wheel has a good wear-resistant property in UAG process.

In this paper, topography feature of the diamond grinding wheel under the diamond stylus elliptical ultrasonic vibration assisted dressing was studied experimentally. The results indicate that: the increase in dressing power of elliptical ultrasonic vibration will result in the increase in amplitude, and that can increase abrasive protrusion height of the dressing grinding wheel, and also increase the depth of chip pocket. With the increase of feed rate, surface peak and valley values of elliptical ultrasonic vibration dressing grinding wheel increase, that is the average protrusion height of abrasive grain increases. With the increase of dressing depth, surface peak and valley values of elliptical ultrasonic vibration dressing grinding wheel increases, while the number of static effective abrasive grain reduces. In comparison with the ordinary dressing grinding wheel, elliptical ultrasonic assisted dressing in the same parameters can bring about more static effective abrasive grain , more uniform abrasive distribution, a higher abrasive protrusion height and more chip space.

A grinding wheel wears rapidly during ultrasonic assisted surface generation of a large aperture aspherical RB-SiC mirror, which leads to an increase of grinding force and profile error. In this paper, different types of resinoid bonded diamond grinding wheel with a same grit size were dressed with high-pressure abrasive water jet. The dressing effects of abrasive water jet were assessed through comparing the 3D roughness of the grinding wheel topographies before and after dressing. The experimental results show that diamond grits of a worn grinding wheel are protruding from bond after dressing. The feed rate of nozzle and the bond materials have significant impact on the 3D surface roughness of the wheel and dressing efficient. The softer binder and the decrease of the feed rates and lead to deeper grooves during dressing of grinding wheel. However, too low feed rate will make a large number of abrasive particles drop from binder, which worsens the wheel topography. Therefore, to dress grinding wheel well and efficiently, optimized feed rate must be chosen.

Quartz glass is a typical hard and brittle material. During the manufacturing process of quartz glass components, ultra-precision grinding is widely used due to its high throughput and good dimensional accuracies. However, grinding will unavoidably induce large surface and subsurface damage. In this study, the surface and subsurface damage characteristics of quartz glass substrates ground by diamond wheels with different grit sizes were investigated in terms of surface roughness, surface topography, subsurface microcrack characteristic, and subsurface damage depth. Discussion was also provided to explore corresponding reasons of surface and subsurface damage induced by diamond grinding wheels with different grit sizes of #1500 and #2000. The experiment results showed that the surface roughness, surface damage, and subsurface damage depth induced by #2000 quartz glass was ground by #1500 diamond grinding wheel, and in ductile mode when ground by #2000 diamond grinding wheel.

YL10.2 and YF06 are ultrafine-grained cemented carbides, and grinding experiments were carried out with resin-bonded diamond grinding wheel. Based on measured grinding force, surface roughness and SEM topography, experimental results were analyzed; grinding forces and depth of grinding approach linear correlation; and the grinding force of YF06 is greater than that of YL10.2 in rough grinding, but the grinding force increases significantly if depth of cut is greater than a certain value in finish grinding. The trend of machined surface roughness looks like “V” type with the increasing of depth of cut; the material removal behavior of ultrafine-grained cemented carbides in grinding was observed; the ploughing and fragmentation exist simultaneously on the ground surface, and the dominated material removal behavior depends on the grinding parameters or chemical composition of workpiece.

A monolayer brazed diamond grinding wheel was dressed 23 times with a plate wheel. The grinding forces were measured during the grinding experiments which carried out on SiC ceramics after each dressing interval. The surface roughness of SiC ceramics was also measured. In this study, the dullness of the grinding wheel during the dressing procedure is mainly discussed. The results showed that the surface roughness of SiC ceramics reduced a lot after dressing which means the dressed grinding wheel can meet the requirements of precision machining. On the premise of this, there was no obvious dullness occurred on the grits of the grinding wheel during dressing because new cutting edges had emerged.
