The numerical simulation can be obtained by taking advantage of turbulence model of Fluent to study the gas-solid flow field of cyclone separator. The pressure of the cyclone drops increases with the enhancement of the inlet flow velocity, and the increase amplitude can become larger and larger. The separation efficiency of the cyclone enhances gradually as the increase of the flow. The increase amplitude of small and secondary particles is much lager compared with the increase amplitude of big ones. The overall separation efficiency can strengthen gradually with increasing of particles concentration as well as the each part’s efficiency. But the separation efficiency will stay in stable level when the concentration reaches a certain value with the big particles in the low concentration and small ones in a relatively high concentration.

In view of the difficulty of traditional hydrocyclones to meet the requirements of fine classification, a double-overflow three-product (internal overflow, external overflow and underflow) hydrocyclone was designed in this study. Numerical simulation and experimental research methods were used to investigate the effects of double-overflow flow field characteristics and structural parameters (i.e., internal vortex finder diameter and insertion depth) on separation performance. The research results showed that the larger the diameter of the internal vortex finder, the greater the overflow yield and the larger the cut size. The finest internal overflow product can be obtained when the internal vortex finder is 30 mm longer than the external vortex finder. The separation efficiency is highest when the internal vortex finder is 30 mm shorter than the external vortex finder.

The numerical simulation of the cyclone separator was carried out by CFD software. The effects of the gas outlet duct length on the pressure drop and separation efficiency were discussed. The gas phase is used as a continuous medium, and the RNG k-ϵ turbulence model is used to simulate the flow field. Using the particle phase as a discrete system, a random orbital model is used to calculate the orbit of the particle based on the calculated flow field. The simulation results show that the flow field in the cyclone separator is anisotropic. When the inlet velocity is constant, the pressure drop of cyclone separators increases with the increase of gas outlet duct length. The longer gas outlet duct can limit the inflowing gas, so that there is enough time to establish uniform rotating flow. It helps stabilize the spiral airflow and improve the separation performance of cyclone separator.

On the base of numerical simulation and theoretical analysis, the flow field of a conventional single-tangential-inlet Hydrocyclone and a newly put forward axial-symmetry double-tangential-inlet hydrocyclone were contrasted. The study shows that the inlet structure of the Hydrocylone has a great influence on the radial velocity of the flow field in the hydrocyclone and that the radial velocity in the hydrocyclone with single-tangential-inlet is not symmetry about the axis of the hydrocyclone; and on the other hand the radial velocity in the hydrocyclone with axial-symmetry double-tangential-inlet is symmetry about the axis of the hydrocyclone. The magnitude of the radial velocity of the flow in the hydrocyclone with single-tangential-inlet is greater than that in the hydrocyclone with axial-symmetry double-tangential-inlet hydrocyclone, which means the hydrocyclone with axial-symmetry double-tangential-inlet has greater capability than the rival one with single-tangential inlet. The symmetry about the axis of the hydrocyclone of the radial velocity means the radial velocities in the place where the radio is the same are constant, which means the hydrocyclone has a great separation efficiency. The conclusion is that changing the conventional hydrocyclone into the one with axial-symmetry double-tangential-inlet structure can offer greater separation capability and efficiency.

In this paper, we use two-phase mixture model and the Realizable k-ε turbulence model to numerically simulate the advection secondary flow in a sedimentation tank. The PISO algorithm is used to decouple velocity and pressure. The comparisons between the measured and computed data are in good agreement, which indicates that the model can fully simulate the flow field in a sedimentation tank.

To enhance the exhaust efficiency during ventilation, three types of air duct outlets were imported. According to the characteristics of velocity distribution simulated by numerical method, the flow field is divided into the mixing zone and the exhaust zone. The gradual contracted air duct outlet can enhance the mixing effect between fresh air and smoke. In the exhaust zone, however, the flow velocity on the upper section of the tunnel is weakened, which is unfavorable for smoke exhaust. Gradual expanded air duct outlet, on the contrary, may weaken the concentration effect of the airflow. The flow velocity on the upper section of the tunnel is increased in the exhaust zone, thus the flow field is more homogenized, which is in favor of smoke exhaust.

Designed a new type of double inlet cylindrical cyclone. For search the separation performance in a cylindrical cyclone. By use of CFD,applied the RSM turbulence model and Euler two-phase flow method and ASM which to simulate separation process and flow field within a double inlet cylindrical cyclone. Then compared with the single inlet cyclone, obtained velocity distribution. Analyzed the differences of discrete phase volume fraction between different viscosity. The results show that the new-style cyclone caught more stable fluid field and higher separation efficiency. And when the viscosity is about 0.75 kg/m•s, the separation efficiency and stability of the oil core is higher. Preliminary flow field law is shown up.

Compound hydrocyclone is a kind of dynamic hydrocyclone also with the advantages of static hydrocyclone. In this investigation, the effect of operating parameters on separation performance of compound hydrocyclone is studied using both CFD technique and experimental method. The flow field of compound hydrocyclone was simulated by the RSM turbulence model; the particles with different size were simplified to 6 phases and simulated by the mixture multiphase model. The central composite design method was used to conduct the separation experiment of compound hydrocyclone. The results indicated that compound hydrocyclone can be used for finer particles separation and the flow field of compound hydrocyclone can still achieve a higher centrifugal force in lower inlet velocity. When the minimum partition size is required, the optimized operating condition of the compound hydrocyclone is v = 2.5 m/s, n = 1865 rpm, and c = 7.5%, while when the maximum partition size is required, the optimized operating condition is v = 2.5 m/s, n = 905 rpm, and c = 24.5%.

This paper mainly focuses on the numerical simulation of flow velocity aiming to obtain the velocity distribution of flow in the cyclone. The authors took advantage of RSM turbulence model of software FLUENT to calculate the velocity distribution. Relationship between particles separation and double-layer rotating flow can be obtained based on the simulation results, which can also provide basis for the improvement of structure design and separation performance.
