The subject of the article is focused on the refining of the cast structure of gamma TiAl–2Nb alloy using cyclic heat treatment and on the analysis of the grain refining mechanism. Microstructure evolution after applied cycles of heat treatment was characterized using light, laser and electron microscopy and using microhardness tests. Application of five heat treatment cycles during which two phase transformations (eutectoid and alfa-recrystallization reactions) repeatedly took place resulted αin refining of the cast columnar structure. The mean grain-lamellar colony size 0.512 mm was transformed to fully lamellar structure containing gamma and alfa2 phases having the mean grain size 0.229 mm. Lamellae thickness of gamma was not changed while the thickness of alfa2 phase decreased to 78 nm. Refining of alfa2 phase resulted in the increase of the microhardness by 20 %. The recrystallized cast structure obtained by cyclic heat treatment and the knowledge on the mechanisms of the refining the structure were compared and discussed with the literature data.

Two-phase nanocrystalline ribbons were prepared by melt-spun and subsequent heat treatment. Excellent magnetic properties of the bonded magnet were achieved as follows: Br = 0.67 T, JHc = 664.3 kA·m-1, (BH) max = 75.0 kJ·m-3. The mean grain size of the ribbons heat-treated at 710 °C/ 4 min is about 50 nm. After heat-treated the ribbons at 750 °C/ 4 min, the mean grain size is about 100 nm.

In order to overcome constraints related to crack formation during additive processing (laser powder bed fusion, L-BPF) of Fe-Mn-Al-Ni, the potential of high-temperature L-PBF processing was investigated in the present study. The effect of the process parameters on crack formation, grain structure, and phase distribution in the as-built condition, as well as in the course of cyclic heat treatment was examined by microstructural analysis. Optimized processing parameters were applied to fabricate cylindrical samples featuring a crack-free and columnar grained microstructure. In the course of cyclic heat treatment, abnormal grain growth (AGG) sets in, eventually promoting the evolution of a bamboo like microstructure. Testing under tensile load revealed a well-defined stress plateau and reversible strains of up to 4%.
