Printed educational materials such as teacher’s handbook may affect the quality of education as much as teachers, curriculum, educational environment, and the other course materials. Perspectives of eighty-two pre-service elementary teachers regarding the activities and songs included in the teacher’s handbook for music course were examined by content analysis for shedding light on the nature of the handbook and for producing knowledge about how an effective teacher’s handbook for music course may be like. Even though the question was deliberately worded to let respondents express their both positive and negative views, the number of respondents who expressed positive views and the frequency of such expressions were considerably lower compared to the negative ones. Inappropriateness for age group and learning outcomes, insufficiency for facilitating learning, requiring hard-to-attain materials, and difficulty of application raised as major concerns for both activates and songs. Additionally, activities were argued to be repetitive and lacking entertainment while songs were criticized for their rhythm, melody, lyrics, quality, and practicability in the classroom.

This chapter is dedicated to Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) employing dynamic groups, where at different stages students work independently, interact with each other in pairs, and conduct joint work in larger groups with varying numbers of participants. A novel Dynamic Group Environment for Collaborative Learning (DGE/CL) that supports students in making informed and intelligent choices about how, when, and with whom to collaborate is introduced. A face-to-face collaborative scenario, where all students are in the same room and can move freely around and interact with each other while using digitally enhanced printed materials with direct point-and-click functionality is considered. Flexible and efficient support for dynamic group management is ensured through the adopted Cluster Pattern Interface (CLUSPI) technology, which, while preserving the original touch-and-feel of printed educational materials, supports additional affordances and allows employment of new, non-traditional paper-based interactions. Possibilities for DGE/CL enhancements with specialized surface code readers and laser-based digital surface encoding being developed by the authors are outlined and references to recent projects are given.

The present study aimed at systematizing information on the incidence of Graphic Language Symbolization Modes (GL) in the contents of Printed Educational Materials-PEMs for Health Promotion in Brazil, as well as the identification of weaknesses. As a source of research, it was used the Virtual Health Library of the Ministry of Health (BVS-MS), which provides virtually the largest collection of health PEMs in Brazil. Was used descriptors related to the theme in question in the areas of: Prevention of STI/AIDS; Aedes aegypti prevention; Chronic Degenerative Diseases (Hypertension and Diabetes) and Breast Feeding/Complementary Eating. After that, the quantitative information was categorized and the compositional elements of the PEMs were analyzed in the light of Information Design. The results allowed an understanding, through analysis, of the representation of informational contents that will serve as a guiding basis for the adaptation of future strategies for more efficient graphic composition in health, with the contribution of Information Design.

Abstract Background: Written health educational materials are an integral part of the treatment process. Because of the constantly increasing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) global rate, pregnant women require accessible, easy-to-understand and evidence-based medical information about this pregnancy complication. Aim: To adapt and elaborate printed educational materials on GDM and to evaluate the usefulness of the produced training materials and pregnant women’s satisfaction. Materials and methods: The present study implemented a methodological approach covering three phases: (1) systematic literature review; (2) compilation of printed educational materials for pregnant women with GDM; (3) evaluation of the usefulness and satisfaction with the produced educational materials through a focus group consisting of pregnant women. A seven-item self-administered feedback questionnaire was adopted for evaluation of patient satisfaction after the use of educational materials. Results: An educational manual was developed in compliance with the main requirements for effectiveness of educational materials referring to content, structure, language, layout and illustrations. The usefulness of the educational manual and patient satisfaction were evaluated by a sample group of 20 women with GDM. Approximately 95% agreed or strongly agreed that the information in the educational manual was useful. The patients’ assessment of the understanding and readability of the written materials showed a satisfaction rate of 85%. The overall assessment for the educational materials was very high - excellent (65%), very good (30%) and good (5%). Conclusion: The provision of educational materials on GDM can enhance pregnant women’s health literacy as well as their responsibility, motivation and attitude to their personal health.
