Considering the current importance watercourses quality conservation, it is important to establish relationships between parameters that enable evaluation of the origins of changes in water quality, allowing actions to mitigate them. However, it is important to improve the association of different variables and to take sufficient samples. This study associates usual techniques and parameters to analyse the water quality of an urban river from Paraná State, Brazil. For this, we used biological indicators (aquatic macroinvertebrates), physical-chemical (temperature, turbidity, true colour, pH, DO and BOD5,20) indicators and microbiological (faecal and total coliforms) indicators. These indicators were related to land use and occupation classes obtained from high resolution QuickBird 2 images. For this association, the surroundings (450 meters buffer) of three distinct points of the river were considered: I. Near the spring; II. In the downtown city; and III. In a residential neighbourhood. Different values of physical, chemical and microbiological variables were detected along the river, showing evident relationships between them and with the use and occupation of the urban and peri-urban space in the characterization of surface waters. The association design was able to detect the landscape effect on water quality in a coherent way and that these connections were mainly related to suppression of the riparian forest present in the surroundings, further demonstrating the importance of this vegetation for the maintenance of watercourse quality.

The aim of this research was to study the ciliated protozoa community at three sampling stations that receive different levels of domestic sewage along the São Pedro Stream in the municipality of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in order to determine the influence of organic pollution on this community and to assess the feasibility of using ciliates as water quality indicators. Four physical-chemical parameters of the water samples were evaluated: dissolved oxygen concentration, electrical conductivity, pH and temperature. The sediment was obtained manually, using dredges with capacity of 300 mL, at each collection point. Point 1 was located in a rural region that receives a low sewage load, while Points 2 and 3 were located in populated regions receiving high sewage loads. We found 22 ciliate species, of which 18 are included in the saprobic system and are considered bioindicators. These showed beta-mesosaprobic environments at Point 1 and alfa-mesosaprobic to polisaprobic environments at Points 2 and 3. The low levels of dissolved oxygen and the high electrical conductivity values at Points 2 and 3, together with the strong similarity between the ciliate taxocenoses of these points and the weak similarity between Point 1 and the other two, confirm the high sewage loads received at the latter two points. The combination of the biological indicators and physical-chemical analyses therefore proved itself to be an efficient method of evaluating water quality, and has excellent potential to support decisions on the conservation of headwaters and recuperation of degraded environments in lotic systems.

Currently, Situ Lebak Wangi is used as a waste disposal site by the community. This can lead to changes in the quality of both physical, chemical and biological waters there. Therefore, research on the physical, chemical and biological qualities of waters of Situ Lebak Wangi to obtain information about the quality of the waters so that it can be socialized to the community around the importance of conservation, management and utilization of the site. The result of measurement of physical and chemical properties of water shows that the temperature in Situ Lebak Wangi waters still meet the water quality standard class 1, the total dissolved solids of waters Situ is still below the required quality standard threshold, the brightness value in Situ Lebak Wangi waters ranges between 67, 17 - 80.83 cm with an average rating of 74.46 cm, the pH value of the lake waters lower than river waters, which ranged from 6.60-8-80. Measurements of DO indicate that in lake waters oxygen consumption is higher, whereas BOD5 results show that waters Situ Lebak Wangi already contaminated by organic material easily explained (BOD5). The electrical conductivity values range from 112.0 - 118.0 μhos / cm. The result of Situ Lebak Wangi water quality analysis as a whole shows that the water is not feasible to serve as raw water, because it contains Salmonella-Shigella pathogen bacteria which is the cause of thypus and cholera.

Keywords - physical quality, chemistry and biology, Situ Lebak Wangi, Waters, Water quality standards

The use of surface waters such as rivers for domestic, agricultural andindustrial purposes have made them vulnerable to pollution leading to impairedwater quality. The water quality of Lahug River in Cebu City was evaluated usingcoliforms as indicators, in relation with physicochemical parameters such as biological oxygen demand (BOD), conductivity, dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate,pH, phosphate, salinity, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS) and totalsuspended solids (TSS). Sampling was done once a month from November 2011to April 2012 in three stations covering the upstream, midstream and downstream. The multiple tube fermentation technique was used for the analysis of coliforms. The level of these indicator bacteria increased from the upstream towards thelower reaches of the river especially in the months of February to April; however, the difference in values across time was not significant. This implies that therewas a continuous fecal pollution in the river. There were no statistically significantcorrelations between FCs and TCs with the physicochemical parameters. Anegative relationship was observed among FCs and TCs with pH, TSS, DOand nitrate (p>0.05). These results suggest the presence of sewage and organicpollutants in the river. Keywords: Aquatic Ecology, water quality, coliform, physicochemical parameters, experimental design, Philippines

Characterization of Environmentally friendly materials used as wastewater treatment material has been studied in order to compare the quality of wastewater in Chiang Mai, Thailand on two types of treatment materials, which are cow bone char (CBC) made from Thai cow bone char cleaned and calcined at 850๐C and the a mineral called “zeolite” (ZLT) bought from Kamthiang market, Chiang Mai. The physical characteristics of both types of materials indicate that the CBC has a higher density than the ZLT but has lower pore volume than the ZLT. The effect of density on the water quality improvement was showed that CBC was a suitable type of wastewater treatment material because their high density can fix them in the batch system.
