Peperomia pellucida also known as shiny bush is a common plant wildly distributed in the tropical regions of the world including Nigeria. In ethnomedicine, it is used to treat hemorrhages, fevers, lower cholesterol levels and serves as a cough suppressant, emollient, and diuretic. This study evaluated the in vitro and antidiarrhea activities of Peperomia pellucida. For the in vitro antioxidant assay the following methods were used: 2-diphenyl-2-pierylhydrazylhydrate (DPPH) scavenging activity, Superoxide scavenging activity, Hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity, Lipid Peroxidation Assay, Total Antioxidant Capacity, 2,2’-Azinobis (3-Ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic Acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity and Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity. Antidiarrheal activities were studied using Castor Oil-Induced and Intestinal Transit in Mice models. Methanol and aqueous plant extract of Peperomia pellucida at various concentration demonstrated impressive in vitro antioxidant scavenging activities. The onset of diarrheal (**P<0.01) and the % of charcoal travel (*P<0.05) in the mice was reduced at 200 mg/kg compared to the control. Conclusively, this study showed that the aqueous and methanol extract of Peperomia pellucida has in vitro free radical scavenging activities. The plant demonstrated antidiarrheal activities.

The methanol extract of the leaves of Buddleja asiatica Lour. (Loganiaceae) showed antioxidant activity toward the well known in vitro antioxidant tests such as total antioxidant capacity by the phosphomolybdenum method, free radical scavenging activity by the 1,1- diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl scavenging assay (DPPH assay) and hydrogen peroxide scavenging methods. Due to the high scavenging activity of the n-butanol successive fraction toward DPPH and H2O2 (SC50 = 11.99 and 18.54 μg/ml, respectively), this extract was subjected to chromatographic separation and isolation. Four non-phenolic compounds were isolated and identified on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical analyses: 1-O-ß-D-glucopyranosyl- 2-methoxy-3-(2-hydroxy-triaconta-3,12-dienoate)-glycerol (1), 3-O-[α-l-rhamnopyranosyl- (1→4)-ß-d-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)]-[ß-d-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)]-ß-d-fucopyranosyl-olean- 11,13(18)-diene-3ß,23,28-triol (2), 3-O-[α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-ß-d-glucopyranosyl- (1→4)-ß-d-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)]-ß-d-fucopyranosyl-olean-11,13(18)-diene-3ß,23,28-triol (3), and 3-O-[α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-ß-d-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)]-[ß-d-xylopyranosyl- (1→2)]-ß-d-glucuronopyranosyl-acid-olean-11,13(18)-diene-3ß,23,28-triol (4). The four compounds were evaluated as antioxidant agents using the three antioxidant bioassay tests.

Sygygium cumini, commonly known as Malabar plum, Java plum, black plum, jamun or jambolan, is an evergreen tropical tree in the flowering plant family Myrtaceae. The present study the antioxidant effects of microparticles of S. cumini plant extract were evaluated using in vitro, 2, 2-diphenylpicrylhydrazine photometric assay, total antioxidant activity and super oxide free radical scavenging activity. The microparticles showed different levels of radicals scavenging activity in a dose-dependent manner over the range of 50–150 µg/mL concentration, indicating the high antioxidative capacity of the extract. In all the experimental screening models microparticles of aqueous extract show the maximum inhibition of free radicals comparison of other experimental model at different concentrations. These findings suggest that the seed of Syginium cumini has potent antioxidant activity which may be responsible for some of its reported pharmacological activities and can be used as antioxidant supplement.

The rice bran protein (RBP) was then hydrolyzed with various proteases (papain, flavorzyme, neutrase, protamex, and trypsin) to prepare antioxidant peptides. The rice bran protein hydrolysates (RBPH) were assessed using method of DPPH radical scavenging ability. Hydrolysate prepared with papain and flavorzyme (activity ratio 1:1) was found to have the highest antioxidant activity (IC50=6.778±0.21 mg/ml). This hydrolysate was purified using ultrafiltration, RBPH-III (Mw<3KDa) had the highest DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity (IC50 value of 6.56±0.28, 5.43±0.22, respectively) and highest reducing power activity (1.02±0.18 at 4 mg/mL). Later, RBPH-III was fractionated by SP-SephadexC-25 cation-exchange column into six fractions (A–F), fraction F with the highest DPPH scavenging activity, was then separated by size exclusion chromatography on a SephadexG-25 into three major fractions (F1–F3). Fraction F2 exhibited the highest DPPH scavenging activity was choose to fractionate by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), seven antioxidant peptides were isolated, The F2-5 peptide displayed the highest DPPH radical-scavenging activity (58.2±1.63%; at 250 μg/ml) among these peptides, the amino acids composition of F2-5 was determined, which might play an important role on its antioxidant activity. In addition, purified peptide did show remarkable inhibition rate on SGC-7901 cells proliferation, and it also revealed the dose-dependent relationship. The results of this study suggest that rice bran protein hydrolysates are good source of natural antioxidants.

The ethanolic extract of the leaves of Cassia occidentalis (Co) were subjected to phytochemical analysis by standard qualitative analysis and the invitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by determination of total antioxidant capacity, 1.1- diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) radical scavenging activity, superoxide scavenging activity and Ferric reducing anti oxidant potential (FRAP). The analyses revealed that the ethanolic extract of Co was able to efficiently scavenge the free radicals in a dose dependant manner. The results were compared with the standard antioxidant ascorbic acid. The results have shown that crude ethanolic extract of the leaves of Co showed excellent antioxidant activity due to the presence of bioactive compounds namely alkaloids, betacyanin, cardiac glycosides, coumarins, flavonoids, phenols, steroids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids, anthraquinones and emodins.

Objective: The objective is to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the methanolic leaf extract of Wedelia chinensis.Methods: In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by studying 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, superoxide radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) scavenging activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, metal chelating activity, and total antioxidant activity. Ascorbic acid, BHT, quercetin, and EDTA were used as standards for the experiments.Results: Inhibition concentration50 values observed for DPPH radical scavenging, superoxide radical scavenging, and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities were determined to be 62.5, 769.23, and 617.28 μg/ml, respectively and that of FRAP scavenging, metal chelating, and total antioxidant activities were found to be 343 μmol Fe (II)/g, 79.56 mg EDTA/g extract, and 398.17 mg ascorbic acid eq/g extract, respectively.Conclusion: The results clearly indicate that methanolic leaf extract of the study species W. chinensis is effective in scavenging free radicals and has the potential to be a powerful antioxidant.

The objective of the present study is to investigate nutritional and antioxidant activity of four types of organic tomato cultivars. The differences in tomato quality are also tested between groups with or without treatment using an organic biostimulator, Stimplex. Total phenolic compounds (TPC), lycopene,β-carotene, DPPH free radical scavenging activity, reducing power, and color parameters were investigated in the current study. The results showed that there was no significant difference in TPC among cultivars regardless of Stimplex treatment. Higher lycopene andβ-carotene were obtained in Stimplex treated tomatoes. Lycopene andβ-carotene contents were significantly different among cultivars (P<0.05). DPPH scavenging activity in controlled group was significantly higher than that in the Stimplex treated tomatoes (P<0.05). No significant difference in reducing power was detected among cultivars treatment groups. The study showed that the darker the tomato color, the higher the lycopene andβ-carotene contents and the stronger the reducing power.

Dried and powdered leaves of Albizia chevalieri were extracted using ethanol. The extract was fractionated to give methanol, chloroform and pet-ether. The four extracts obtained; ethanol, chloroform, methanol and pet-ether were evaluated for antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay. The results of the DPPH scavenging activity indicated a concentration-dependent antioxidant activity. The DPPH scavenging activity of the ethanol, chloroform and methanol extracts were found to be promising. There is no significant difference in the antioxidant activity between the ethanol, chloroform and methanol extracts with that of standard Ascorbic acid at 10, 25, 250 and 500 μg/ml concentrations. This showed that the ethanol, chloroform and methanol leave extracts of the plant has the potency of scavenging free radicals in vitro and may provide leads in the ongoing search for natural antioxidants from Nigerian medicinal plants to be used in treating diseases related to free radical reactions.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of drying duration of Sabah Snake Grass (Clinachantus Nutans) botanical drinks on sensory properties, total phenolic content (TPC) and free radical scavenging activity (FRSA). Three types of drinks samples were produced using a Sabah Snake Grass leaves which dried by oven method at temperature 45oC for 2 days for Formulation 1 (F1), 5 days for Formulation 2 (F2) and without drying (FS). Sensory analysis is performed to determine the level of panel acceptance of attribute such as color, taste, aroma and overall acceptance of Sabah Snake Grass drinks. Next, all samples were analyzed to determine total phenolic content and antioxidant effect via 2, 2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) scavenging activity. For sensory analysis, F2 resulted highest acceptance level by panelist compared to F1 and FS for all attributes and overall acceptance. Based on the result, F2 also showed highest total phenolic content (0.78 ppm) and highest percentage of inhibition compared to other samples. The results showed drying process could increase the acceptance level of panelist, phenolic content and scavenging activity of the Sabah Snake Grass drinks.

The present study aims to develop an herbal tea formulation from leaves of Moringa oleifera incorporating with rhizomes of Alpinia galanga and the inflorescence of Elsholtzia communis with an insight to improve its sensory attributes and also enhancing the nutritional value. The ingredients were processed and three herbal teas HT1, HT2, HT3 were formulated by mixing them at different levels of incorporation. Acceptability trials for color, aroma, taste and overall aceptability revealed that HT2 was the most liked infusion with highest scores for color (7.8), taste (8.04) and overall acceptability (7.96). The total antioxidant capacity of HT2 was determined by the DPPH scavenging activity test by the method of Blois. The methanolic extracts of the herbal tea sample showed 76.12% radical scavenging activity whereas the sample extracted with DMSO showed a lower antioxidants capacity of 62.45%. The shelf life of the herbal tea was studied by storing in different packaging materials. HDPE Zip loc bags, tea bags (packed in paper cartons) and HDPE containers stored the product without spoilage over a period of six months. The developed herbal tea has a good market potential with significant health benefits.

Aims: The present study evaluates the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of the crude dichloromethane (CDCME), ethyl acetate (CEAE), and methanol (CMeE) extracts from the plant Oldenlandia corymbosa L. Background:Oldenlandia species have been popular among the people of the Indian subcontinent to treat several types of internal and external inflammation for a long time. Plant decoctions have been used to battle inflammation in cases of tonsilitis, pneumonia and cholecystitis, among others. Objective: The present work designed to demonstrate the properties of the previously mentioned plant extracts to prevent inflammation both in vivo and in vitro. This work is the first investigation of such extracts from this species and their relationship with anti-inflammatory activity. Method: The anti-inflammatory properties of the Oldenlandia corymbosa L. extracts were evaluated in vitro with the Red Blood Cell (RBC) membrane stabilization method and the protein denaturation method and in vivo with the carrageenan-induced paw oedema method. Furthermore, the free radical scavenging activity of the extracts was carried out with the 1,1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical oxidation, total antioxidant capacity and iron reduction assay. Result: Both in vivo and in vitro studies showed that CDCME had the most predominant effects with the value of 80.5% for RBC membrane stabilization, 60% for inhibition of protein denaturation at the concentration of 1000 µg/mL and 63.28% (after 3 h, * p < 0.05) for inhibition of paw oedema (300 mg/kg bwt) compared to carrageenan-induced mice. The free radical scavenging activity was studied by DPPH, total antioxidant and reducing activity assay. CDCME showed scavenging activity in all the methods and an IC50 value of 473.86 µg/mL for DPPH method. Conclusions: The findings of the study remarked that CDCME of the plant has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that validate the traditional use of the plant to get remedy from pain. Other: The plants Oldenlandiacorymbosa Linn were provided by the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Laboratory campus, Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Experiments on animals were conducted by ethical permission of Institute of Biological Sciences, University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh (license no: 225/320-IAMEBBC/IBSc).
