Background Assessment of nasal obstruction is imprecise due to a low correlation between findings on the physical examination and objective measures with the severity of symptoms reported by the patient even after septoplasty with turbinoplasty is performed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the use of subjective scales, and the correlation between them for the evaluation of nasal obstruction after surgery. Objective To assess the impact of undergoing septoplasty with turbinoplasty to relieve nasal obstructive symptoms and the quality of life in a mid-term period by using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE), and Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI). Methods A retrospective study was conducted of patients who underwent a septoplasty with turbinoplasty due to nasal septodeviation and secondary nasal obstructive symptoms at the Hospital Universitario Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá. Three scales were used to measure the outcomes one year after surgery: VAS (0–10), NOSE (0–100), and GBI (−100 to 100). Results Data from 56 patients (21 females, mean age 37.5 years of age, SD 12.13) was collected. The results showed that 75% of the patients had a post-surgical NOSE score below 50 and a VAS score below 6. Regarding the GBI scale, 75% of the patients improved in their quality of life. An inverse proportional correlation was found between the NOSE and GBI scales (rho = −0.3682) (95% CI −0.579 to –0.111), and there was a directly proportional correlation between the NOSE and VAS scales (rho = 0.7440) (95% CI 0.595 to 0.844). Conclusion Subjective measures suggest there was an improvement in nasal obstructive symptoms and quality of life after surgery. Non-anatomical causes such as rhinitis can be confounding factors to consider in subsequent studies. VAS stands out as a possible interchangeable scale with NOSE to measure nasal obstruction in these patients.

Background: The quality of life (QOL) evaluation is a relatively new measure to evaluate the outcome of epilepsy. Many factors influence the quality of life of people with epilepsy, including seizure severity, stigma, fear, and the presence of cognitive or psychiatric problems. QOL is influenced by biological factors as well as cultural, social and religious beliefs and values. This study was planned to find out the impact of epilepsy on quality of life of epileptic patients. Methods: The study was conducted in the epilepsy clinic of department of neurology at a tertiary care hospital over a period of one year.101 patients were included after fulfilling the inclusion criteria. All the patients seeking treatment in the OPD were screened, assessed and then all procedures were fully explained to them. History regarding name, age sex, socio-demographic profile and detailed history regarding seizure disorder was taken from both the patient and the reliable informant. Bengali version of QOLIE-9 was used to assess the quality of life. Results: One hundred and one patients with epilepsy consisting of 70 men (69.3%) and 31 women (30.7%) were included. Their ages ranged from 15 to 52, the mean age being 26.17 (SD = 7.84). Out of the 101 patients, 65 patients (64.4%) were suffering from partial epilepsies and 36 patients (35.6%) were suffering from generalized epilepsies. Mean QOLIE-9 total scores were 16.66, 19.74, 20.13 and 24.00 in married, widows, unmarried and separated individuals respectively. The differences in the means were statistically significant on ANOVA (p value 0.002). Mean QOLIE-9 total scores were 27.75, 19.64, 19.65, 18.14 and 18.00 in primary, secondary, higher secondary, graduate and postgraduate individuals respectively. The differences were highly significant statistically on ANOVA (p value<0.001). Frequency of seizures per month was positively correlated with QOLIE-9 total scores (Pearson Correlation 0.622) and was highly statistically significant (p value<0.001).Conclusions: Frequent seizures, lower education level and single status are associated with lower quality of life in persons with epilepsy.

Liver transplantation is considered for patients with liver disease that is predicted to shorten life or causes symptoms that preclude an acceptable quality of life and for individuals with life-shortening genetic disease that can be cured by transplantation. One-year survival exceeds 90%, 5-year survival approaches 80%, and individual median survivals exceed 20 years....

Objective: To evaluate the impact of pre and early post operative physical therapy on quality of life (QOL) in patients of liver transplantation. Methods and materials: A Single group pre and post experimental study design was conducted in Shifa International Hospital in which 20 patients with cirrhotic liver waiting for transplant participated. Non probability Convenience Sampling technique was used. Data was collected over a period of six months using a standard questionnaire 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36)and a General demographic questionnaire which included age, gender, BMI, along with diabetes, hypertension, ECOG level, tidal volume, muscle power, 6 minute walk test(heart rate, SpO2, distance covered, exertion level measurement). Results: The mean ± SD age & Body Mass Index of the participants (N=20) were 47.20 ± 11.49 years and 24.83 ± 2.1 respectively. 6 Minute Walk Test Heart Rate, 6 Minute Walk Test Distance, , ECOG, 6 Minute Walk Test Exertion Level and Muscle power were shown significantly improved throughout the treatment duration (p<0.001). While 6 Minute Walk Test Oxygen Saturation showed significant improvement only in initial two weeks (p=0.01), but at the end of 2nd week and overall improvement was not significant (p≥0.05). The results of the study also showed significant improvement (p<0.001) in all domains of quality of life (SF-36) at the end of study. Conclusion: The study indicated that early pre and post physiotherapy interventions can improve the overall health-related quality of life including the aerobic physical fitness and muscle strength in patients having liver transplantation Keywords: 6 minute walk test, ECOG, Incentive spirometry, Liver transplantation, Muscle power, Physiotherapy, Quality of life.
