Transnational Marketing Journal is dedicated to disseminate scholarship on cross-border phenomena in marketing by acknowledging the importance of local and global or in other words, underlining the transnational practices marked by national and local characteristics in a fluid fashion spreading over more than one national territory. The first article by Paulette Schuster looks into “falafel” and “shwarma” in Mexico and discusses the perception of Israeli food in Mexico. The second article is a case study illustrating a critical account of cultural dimensions formulated by Schwarz using the value surveys data. The third article in the issue is a qualitative study of the negative attitudes of millennials torwards mobile marketing.

Accurate large-area mangrove classification is a challenging task due to the complexity of mangroves, such as abundant species within the mangrove category, and various appearances resulting from a large latitudinal span and varied habitats. Existing studies have improved mangrove classifications by introducing time series images, constructing new indices sensitive to mangroves, and correcting classifications by empirical constraints and visual inspections. However, false positive misclassifications are still prevalent in current classification results before corrections, and the key reason for false positive misclassification in large-area mangrove classifications is unknown. To address this knowledge gap, a hypothesis that an inadequate classification scheme (i.e., the choice of categories) is the key reason for such false positive misclassification is proposed in this paper. To validate this hypothesis, new categories considering non-mangrove vegetation near water (i.e., within one pixel from water bodies) were introduced, which is inclined to be misclassified as mangroves, into a normally-used standard classification scheme, so as to form a new scheme. In controlled conditions, two experiments were conducted. The first experiment using the same total features to derive direct mangrove classification results in China for the year 2018 on the Google Earth Engine with the standard scheme and the new scheme respectively. The second experiment used the optimal features to balance the probability of a selected feature to be effective for the scheme. A comparison shows that the inclusion of the new categories reduced the false positive pixels with a rate of 71.3% in the first experiment, and a rate of 66.3% in the second experiment. Local characteristics of false positive pixels within 1 × 1 km cells, and direct classification results in two selected subset areas were also analyzed for quantitative and qualitative validation. All the validation results from the two experiments support the finding that the hypothesis is true. The validated hypothesis can be easily applied to other studies to alleviate the prevalence of false positive misclassifications.

The region of Yushu has fragile natural environment. In 2010, it suffered severe damages caused by earthquakes. This paper subject, on the basis of status research of natural and cultural environment in Yushu area and urban public facilities across the world, is aiming at a design attempt of public facilities suitable for Yushu area under the guidance of sustainable-development design theory. After constructing computer models, we made physical models to further test the reliability of our scheme. The overall design acts according to circumstances, and makes it environmental friendly, developmental sustainable, economical, aesthetic, practical and reliable. We also added to our design some local characteristics to make it better integrate into the local natural environmental features so that it could be widely used. In the end, we summarized the pros and cons of the scheme through theoretical analysis of our design process, despite that, in June 2014, we had an on-the-spot investigation in Yushu, and according to its current state of development, we made outlooks of our further scheme practice.

This article engages in a survey on the countryside’s building materials in Zhejiang province, and indicates problems in the new countryside construction during the early 1990s to 2005: on one side, rarely few new materials for energy-conservation is being used; on the other side, traditional materials of local characteristics are abandoned. Therefore, this article indicates a range of materials which make improvement or innovation on traditional ones for the characteristic of Zhejiang rural areas. Then comparison is made between clay brick and these ecological materials. As a result, this guides villagers to improve the indoor thermal comfort and to promote rural economic development without large investment.

Grapevine downy mildew (GDM) is a severe disease of grapevines. Because of the lack of reliable information about the dates of GDM symptom onset, many vine growers begin fungicide treatments early in the season. We evaluate the extent to which such preventive treatments are justified. Observational data for 266 untreated sites for the years between 2010 and 2017 were used to estimate the timing of GDM onset on vines and bunches of grapes in South West France (Bordeaux region) through survival analyses. The onset of GDM was not apparent on vines and bunches before early to mid-May, and the rate of GDM symptom appearance was highly variable across years. Depending on the year, 50% of the plots displayed symptoms between mid-May and late June for vines. For several years, our statistical analysis revealed that the proportion of plots with no symptoms was high in early August on vines (27.5 and 43.7% in 2013 and 2016) and on bunches (between 23 and 79% in 2011, 2013, and 2016). We found a significant effect of the amount of rainfall in spring on the date of symptom appearance. These results indicate that preventive fungicide application is unjustified in many vineyards, and that regional disease surveys should be used to adjust fungicide treatment dates according to local characteristics, in particular according to rainfall conditions in spring.
