This study aims to uncover and explain the meaning of change (development) for local communities, behavioral changes that occur in local communities, and what are the ideal expectations of local communities after the Batu Hijau mining company took place. This study uses qualitative methods and data collection by: in-depth interviews, involved observation and review of relevant documents. Data analysis used an interactive model and the validity of the data was controlled by triangulation. The results of the study show: (1) the local community interprets change as an improvement in living standards while maintaining the values and norms that have been adopted. (2) The presence of the Batu Hijau mining company has led to a transformation of the social behavior of the local community in general but not to the point of eliminating the basic principles of behavior originating from religious values and local traditions. The indications are: 1) the traditional knowledge system (indegenous knowledge) is not used as much in the decision to behave as before 2) the local value system and norms are reduced in their binding power and embracing power to the younger generation, 3) the social behavior and orientation of the cultural values of the local community has reflected the community. open and economically oriented. (3) The ideal hope of the local community is the realization of an environmental conservation system, the availability of job opportunities and business opportunities that become a vehicle for community interaction and the realization of the former mining area as an educational tourism area based on sustainable forest ecology.

Mining, specifically, large-scale gold mining has become one of the primary economic activities that play a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of one country. But there is no consensus among scholars whether gold mining companies maintain mutual benefits with local communities. The main objective of this research is to scrutinize the mechanism to be employed in reopening Lega Dambi large-scale gold mining by maintaining mutual benefits between the company and the local community. The researcher employed a qualitative method and a case study research design. Focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from the local community, elders, religious leaders, Abbaa Gadaas, Guji Zone, and Odo Shakiso Woreda investment office, land management office, social and labor affair, mineral, and energy office administrators, and Odo Shakiso Woreda health station and Adola hospital. Secondary sources and regulatory frameworks such as FDRE Constitution and Mining Operations Proclamation No. 678/2010 were used to triangulate with primary data. The finding shows that Lega Dambi's large-scale gold mining company failed to maintain mutual benefits between itself and the local community. Basic tenets such as national and regional corporate social responsibility, community development agreement, impact and benefit agreements, social and labor plan, and social license were not implemented properly to balance the mutual benefit between the company and the local community. The researcher concluded that Lega Dambi large-scale gold mining company disregarded the role of the local community during commencement time albeit it had a strong relationship with the central government. Consequently, the company was terminated because of a bad relationship it had with the local community. It is recommended that national and regional corporate social responsibility that shows the company’s specific joint administration of the central and Oromia region governments should be designed and implemented fully. It is also recommended that discussions should be held with local communities and arrived at a consensus concerning the reopening of the company.

Key community-based environmental conservation programmes in Kong Kong Laut, Johor include the river and mangrove ecosystem conservation and management programme. The overall aim of conserving the ecosystem and encouraging local community participation in the programme is to promote the existing eco-tourism potential of the area. This paper entails the outcomes of community-based activities aimed at building the capacities of local communities through community mobilisation, awareness creation and capacity building (i.e. transferred knowledge and skills). Findings indicate that there have been improvements in the river water quality status within the ecosystems over the course of a one-year project, despite relatively small participation among the local communities in the conservation programme. However, it was evident that active participation from a minority group of the local community has contributed to significant human and social capital, suggesting that community empowerment might be crucial for future development. Despite this, a school outreach programme on waste minimisation within the community demonstrated an encouraging level of participation among school children and teachers. The major challenge to maintaining continuous efforts to conserve their environment is the simultaneous developments taking place close to the river and mangrove ecosystems. While it remains a challenge to all the stakeholders, collaborative efforts among the local communities and the university, school, government agencies and private sector have made it possible to strategise for more future approaches that will benefit the whole community.

As the protected area mandate expands to include social equity, the impacts of parks and their tourism on neighbouring indigenous and local communities is receiving growing practical and theoretical interest. This article reported on one such study, which explored the impacts of protected area tourism on communities bordering the iconic Kruger National Park in South Africa and Purnululu National Park in Australia. The study drew on interviews with park staff, tourism operators and community members. Guided by a conceptual framework grounded in resilience thinking, interactions amongst the parks, tourism and local communities were revealed as complex, contested and multi-scalar. Underlying drivers included cultural norms and values based on nature, entrenched poverty, poor Western education and economic opportunities associated with tourism. Park tourism offered intrinsic opportunities and benefits from nature conservation and associated intangible cultural values. More tangible benefits arose through employment. Damage-causing animals and visitation difficulties were negative impacts. Interaction with tourists was limited, with a sense of disconnect evident. Findings indicated the need for multifaceted, carefully considered policy responses if social equity and benefits for local communities are to be achieved. Framing the impacts of protected area tourism through the resilience framework provided a useful way to access local community perceptions whilst retaining awareness of the broader multi-scalar context in which interactions occur. Conservation implications: Perceptions of separation and lack of education to engage in economic opportunities are major issues. Intrinsic appreciation of parks is an important platform for building future opportunities. Accrual of future benefits for local communities from park tourism depends on developing diverse economic opportunities, building community capacity and managing expectations and addressing economic disadvantage.

This study discusses the philosophical and spiritual values contained in the baumo tradition of the people of Batin XXIV district, Batanghari Regency. The baumo tradition that has been going on for generations in the modern era is starting to be displaced by modern agricultural culture. Not only its existence has begun to be eroded by modern culture, but also the values contained therein have begun to be forgotten by the local community. Even though the baumo traditional values contain local wisdom values, environmental conservation values, spiritual values, and wisdom values that are very relevant in today's modern life. The method that I use in this research is a qualitative research method, to explore and understand the social and cultural phenomena that exist in society. The data collection method that the writer uses is through direct observation into the field, interviews with Umo farmers, community leaders, and traditional leaders, and documentation by examining documents related to the object of research, including Jambi Malay cultural texts. The results of this study indicate that: First, epistemologically, the community's knowledge in carrying out the baumo tradition is based on Jambi's traditional law and Malay culture, namely the syara' jointed tradition and the syara' with the Kitabullah jointed. Apart from that, the baumo tradition is also based on empirical knowledge or people's experiences in terms of natural phenomena. Axiologically, the baumo tradition contains environmental and ethical values in living life. Meanwhile, the baumo tradition also contains spiritual values in the form of belief in the soul of rice, basokat after harvesting umo as a form of belief in religion, and ethics in treating rice as a form of belief in the existence of God.
