Information on the reproductive biology of toadfish remains limited. In this study, we examined the structure and development of gonads in the grunting toadfish Allenbatrachus grunniens (Linnaeus, 1758) using morphological, histological and ultrastructural methods. The fish were collected from the Pranburi River Estuary, Thailand, during the annual reproductive period for this species (January to December 2018). The ovary of this species was paired and had elongated sac-like structures parallel to the kidneys and the digestive tract. In females, we identified 4 oocyte differentiation phases in the ovary including oogonia proliferation phase, a primary growth phase that was further classified into 2 steps (perinucleolar and oil droplets-cortical alveolar steps), and a secondary growth phase that also contained 2 steps (secondary growth and full-grown oocyte steps) and post-ovulatory phases, indicating an asynchronous pattern in ovarian development for this species. Transmission electron microscopy showed the 4 layers including the zona pellucida, basement membrane, granulosa cells and theca cells, all of which initially appeared in the oil droplets-cortical alveolar stage. The zona pellucida and the granulosa cells were highly developed during the secondary growth stage. The granulosa cells contained abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum near the mitochondria. In males, the spermatogenesis was classified into spermatogonium to spermatozoa. Finally, we associated the morphological gonadal developments (stage I - IV) and the gonadosomatic index (GSI value) with the cellular developmental processes in both sexes. These results help integrate various levels of reproductive observations, which will be applied to understanding the reproductive cycle and development for aquaculture.

Histopathological examination is a widely acknowledged technique to assess the reproductive health of aquatic organisms, but it has never been applied to the tunicate Styela plicata, a potential indicator species of water quality. In this study, we examined the oocyte differentiation of S. plicata obtained from the eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand in order to provide basic information for future assessment of its reproductive health. The mature gonad of S. plicata comprised several ovo-testicular convoluted tubes, in which each tube was divided into apical and terminal portions. The ovarian tissue is located in the apical part of the tunicate body and contained oocytes of various differentiation stages (asynchronous development type) consisting of the four phases namely oogonial proliferation phase, primary growth phase, secondary growth phase (secondary growth and full-growth stages), and post-ovulatory phase. Changes in the morphology of oocytes and follicular cells were described for each differentiation stage. In addition, we unexpectedly observed a high prevalence of atretic follicles (24.5%), which might indicate the oocyte damage by environmental stresses. These findings would be useful for future assessment of reproductive histology of S. plicata and other tunicate species from environmental perspectives.

Reproduction in the family Phallostethidae is an area that has long been of interest especially in gonadal structure and gametogenesis. However, no published data concerning as mentioned above in Neostethus lankesteri Regan, 1916 from Thailand is noted. This fish is important for rural livelihood in the estuarine fisheries of Pranburi River estuary, Thailand. The construction of the female reproductive system of N. lankesteri composed of the ovary and short oviduct. The mature ovarian morphology is a single organ, which is histologically considered to be an asynchronous development ovary. The differentiating oocytes were observed and classified into oogonia proliferation, primary growth phase, secondary growth phase, post-ovulatory phase and atretic follicle phase. Under the ovarian differentiation, our observation indicated that the ovarian parenchyma of N. lankesteri during 1.8 – 2.4 cm in standard length (SL) was accompanied by the secondary growth phases. Identification of the post-ovulatory phase was detected during our sampling periods, indicating to entire life in the Pranburi River estuary as well as true resident species. In the male reproductive system of N. lankesteri, the mature testicular parenchyma was organized morphologically as a single organ and histologically appeared to be a restricted spermatogonial lobular testis type. The differentiation of the spermatogenetic stage was composed of three phases including spermatogonial, spermatocyte and spermiogenetic phases. It was to identify possible trends that the size at first maturity of the female fish was estimated at 1.8 cm SL. Certainly, results from this study clearly showed on the reproductive pattern of N. lankesteri, which could be applied to further studies (the reproductive cycle, spawning season and histopathology).

The fine structure of follicles was studied in ovaries from lambs up to 32 days old. Some animals received pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin prior to sampling. Follicles examined were in the primordial to early antral stages. The oocyte is described and changes associated with its development and the formation of the zona pellucida are recorded. Characteristics in which the lamb oocyte differed from those of other mammals included a greater prominence of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, the presence of microtubules, fine filaments in the peripheral parts and a large number of almost empty vacuoles. The latter were more numerous in oocytes which appeared to be degenerating, including some of those in primordial follicles. Granulosa cells had characteristics usually associated with protein secretion while some theca cells had large amounts of endoplasmic reticulum bearing few ribosomes. In early atresia changes were evident successively in the oocyte, granulosa and theca.

Specimens of Serrapinnus piaba were collected monthly from April 2001 to April 2002 in the rio Ceará Mirim, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. The reproductive period, determined through the monthly variation of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and maturation stages, occurred from January to April. Non-parametric Spearman test was performed in order to test correlation of monthly GSI variation in males and females with water temperature, rainfall and day length. Rainfall and Temperature were correlated with GSI variation in females only and day length showed a negative correlation with GSI variation of males only. It was verified the presence of hooks on the anal fin of mature and maturing males along all the period of study. The absolute fecundity mean was 441 (±178.08) oocytes, determined by the number of yolky oocytes counted in 27 mature female gonads. The relative fecundity, estimated by the number of yolky oocytes divided by milligram of total body weight was 0.74 (± 0.19).

The allocation of assimilated energy may be influenced by seasonal changes, growth, and reproductive cycle of fish, food consumption and environmental conditions. The objective of this research was to evaluate the energetic variations of Cichla kelberi in the upper Paraná River floodplain, analyzing the caloric content in muscles, gonadosomatic index (GSI), and the condition factor between assessed systems, sex, and stage of gonadal maturation. The results obtained in the present study permit assuring that this is a species that efficiently converts the resources of the environment into energy. Although presenting higher condition factor in the environment where there is a greater ease in getting food (Paraná subsystem), the energy identified in the muscles was the same in both subsystems. During the process of gonadal maturation there is optimization in energy accumulation in the muscles of females, before and after reproductive period, and somatic growth occurs significantly when the individual is not reproducing. Further detailed studies on ecological mechanisms influencing the success of the species, as the presence of competitors and preference for native preys, are needed to implement effective management measures aimed at preventing that the species proliferation in the environment is even more damaging to local biodiversity.

Studies on identification of species, fecundity and development stages of blue crab, (Callinectes amnicola) were investigated at the Cross River Estuary between the months of December, 2018 and May, 2019. The parameters used for the study were gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices, egg diameter and counts. All measurements followed standard procedures. Gonadosomatic index was at its peak in December (88.9) and April (83.3). This coincided with the peak in egg size suggesting that spawning occurred twice within the period.The low values of hepatosomatic index around December (1.20) and April (0.45) added to confirm the spawning in these months. The species spawns at a mean egg size of 17.55mm. The dimension of crabs examined were in the following range: carapace length 40.0 to 70.0mm, carapace width, 5.0 to 60mm and body weight 40.0 to 140.0g. The relationship between fecundity and weight of crab was  significant (r = 0.295: p<0.05), indicating positive correlation. Absolute fecundity of the species ranged between 1,375 and 225,132 eggs. The smallest crab with egg had a carapace width of 39.5mm and weight of 46.9g. Spawning at this size seems to be a strategy adopted by the species to cope with exploitation pressure. The result of this study revealed that C. amnicola had a high reproductive potentials. Hence, adequate regulation is required to enhance sustainability of the species in the Cross River Estuary.

The reproductive biology of Iheringichthys labrosus (Lütken, 1874) was studied in Furnas reservoir, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The fishes, 323 males and 817 females, were captured bimonthly from August 1993 to July 1994 by using gill nets with 3-10 cm mesh size. Gonadal maturation of the specimens was analyzed through macro and microscopical characteristics of the gonads. The secretory activity of the tubules of the caudal region of the testis was analyzed during the maturational testicular cycle. Females and males were in reproductive activity throughout the year in the reservoir. The peak of advanced maturation/mature stages occurred from October to January and of spawned/spent from February to May. The spawning of I. labrosus was identified as fractional or multiple type: occurring in the reservoir or in tributaries around it. The oocyte development of the species was asynchronous as different clusters of oocytes occurred simultaneously in the ovarian parenchyma. The epithelium of the tubules of the caudal region of the testis was in high secretory activity during advanced maturation/mature stage and this activity was absence in resting. The gonadosomatic index followed gonadal maturation, and the hepatosomatic index of females was lowest in advanced maturation/mature probably due the contribution of the liver in the vitellogenesis. The variations of the stomach repletion index, coelomic fat and condition factor indicated that the feeding activity was reduced and that the energetic reserves were consumed during the reproductive period.

The reproductive process promotes morphophysiological and behavioral changes in fish species throughout their life cycle. Its success is vital to define their resilience in the environment. This study aimed to evaluate the reproductive biology of the endemic fish species Astyanax bifasciatus in a tributary of the Lower Iguaçu River Basin, Paraná, Brazil. Fish were collected monthly at four sites along the Jirau Alto River in the city of Dois Vizinhos from October 2015 to September 2016. A standardized catch effort with gill nets and fish traps was used. In the laboratory, standard length and total weight were recorded. After anesthesia, the animals were sectioned to macroscopically determine the sex, sexual maturity stage, and presence of celomatic fat. The gonads and liver were removed to determine the gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indexes, respectively. A total of 160 individuals (104 females and 56 males) were used. The gonadosomatic index, frequency of the gonadal maturation stages, and condition factor showed a long reproductive period with two investment cycles for both sex. Length at first sexual maturity was 4.57 cm for females and 3.56 cm for males. The reproductive data corroborate the generalist profile of the species and demonstrate a high degree of adaptive capacity, even in smaller tributaries.

An ultrastructural localization of lectin receptors on the zona pellucida (ZP) of porcine antral oocytes and on the granulosa cells was performed using a panel of horseradish peroxidase- labelled lectins in conjunction with antiperoxidase antibody and protein A-gold. In some cases, lectin incubation was preceded by sialidase digestion. WGA-, Con-A-, UEA-I-, RCA-I-, PNA- and SBA-reactive sites were distributed differently in the porcine ZP. Sialidase digestion increased the positivity obtained with RCA-I and it was necessary to promote PNA and SBA reactivity. These results indicated that the ZP contained N-acetylglucosamine, a-mannose, a- fucose, b-Gal-(1-4)GlcNAc, b-Gal- (1-3)GalNAc, b-GalNAc and sialic acid residues. We also observed the presence of vesicles in both the ooplasm and granulosa cells, showing a similar lectin binding pattern to that of the ZP, thus suggesting that the oocyte and granulosa cells are the site of synthesis of ZP glucidic determinants.

The reproductive aspects ofHemiramphus brasiliensiswere analyzed with a view to verify the temporal dynamics of reproduction. This paper presents data on sex ratio, length at first sexual maturity, macroscopic and histological aspects of gonad development, gonadosomatic index (GSI), reproductive period, and fecundity ofH. brasiliensis. The fishes were captured from the coastal waters of Rio Grande do Norte, northeastern Brazil. Females of this species predominated in the sampled population and were larger in size than the males. The length at the first sexual maturation of males was 20.8 cm and that of females was 21.5 cm. The macroscopic characteristics of the gonads indicated four maturation stages. Histological studies of gonads ofH. brasiliensisshowed six phases of oocyte development and four phases of spermatocyte development. The batch fecundity of this species was 1153 (±258.22) mature oocytes for 50 g body weight of female. The microscopic characteristics of gonad development indicate thatH. brasiliensisis a multiple spawner, presenting a prolonged reproductive period during the whole year, with a peak in the month of April, and is considered as an opportunistic strategist.
