Past research considers both fiscal federalism and entity governance principle determinants of local government social capital. However, no study is conclusive enough on this point. Guided by social capital theory, this study surveyed 28 districts, 5 municipalities, and 311 sub-counties of Uganda’s north-eastern and eastern regions to investigate fiscal federalism-entity governance-social capital linkages. Structural equation modeling results reveal resource utilization, bureaucracy, and corruption; prominent fiscal federalism attributes, social capital predictors. Its other equally-vital component; job creation, depicts no predictive powers. Moreover, entity governance mediates the fiscal federalism-social capital relationship. Implications of these findings to both theory and practice are discussed.

Purpose As users often lack the motivation to contribute their ideas and knowledge in open innovation communities, it is necessary to identify the determinants of users’ contribution. This paper aims to examine users’ contribution in open innovation communities based on the social capital theory. Design/methodology/approach The authors collected 474 valid responses from a survey and adopted structural equation modeling (SEM) to conduct data analysis. Findings The results indicated that social interaction, which includes informational and emotional interaction, has a significant effect on social capital, which in turn affects users’ contribution. Research limitations/implications The results imply that companies need to facilitate users’ interactions and develop social capital to promote their contribution in open innovation communities. Originality/value Although previous research has found the effect of individual motivations such as perceived benefits and behavioural control on innovation community users’ behaviour, it has seldom considered the effect of social capital embedded within the social relationship networking. This research tries to fill the gap and the results disclosed the mechanism underlying open innovation community users’ contribution.

The study aims to examine the direct impact of social capital on the employment and income of workers. The research model is built based on Granovetter’s theory of the strength of weak-ties relationships, Putnam’s social capital theory, and the results of some related previous studies. The study used secondary data collected from 1,197 workers in the Dong Thap Muoi region of Long An province. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is used to analyze the data. The results show that social capital has a positive impact on the employment and income of workers, in which the trust factor has the most substantial influence. From the research results, some recommendations are proposed to increase work efficiency and increase employee income.

The research aimed at studying social capital role in land degradation solving of Tulis watershed. The parameters under observation were social capital (trust, norm, and social networking), social-economic condition, and land management in Tulis watershed. The parameters were achieved by using data triangulation principle. The analysis used was Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The model used five variables, which were social capital (X1), society structure (X2), land using conflict (Y1), land management strategy (Y2), and land degradation (Y3). Perspective of social capital theory could be used to explain the interaction between society socio-cultural behaviors and land degradation of Tulis watershed. The model proved that society structure with effective social capital, low conflict in land using, and good land management strategy afforded to decrease land degradation of Tulis watershed.

Purpose This paper draw insights from social capital theory and examines the synergistic effect of several constructs on export performance within the context of exporter–intermediary relationships. Specifically, it assumes that social capital and the set of resources embedded therein strongly influence the extent to which both commitment and cooperation occur, and how these, in turn, impact on export performance. Design/methodology/approach Following a quantitative methodological approach, a survey is applied to a sample of small and medium-sized enterprise exporters, to empirically test the proposed conceptual model. Partial least squares structural equation modeling is used to test the empirical model. Findings The findings reveal that there is a positive and direct impact of social capital on export performance. Results also confirm that the presence of high social capital between exporters and intermediaries affects both high commitment and high cooperation. The study also confirms the mediation effect of cooperation in the relationship between social capital and export performance. Practical implications One possible shortfall of this research relates to the fact that this analysis only incorporates the view of one actor, the view of exporter firms. This limitation could open a rewarding direction for future research, which would be to analyze the view of both sides in a dyadic relationship. Originality/value This paper presents the original approach of looking at the relational antecedents of export performance.

The aim of the investigation was to explain impact of various dimensions of social capital on cooperation. In the attempt we constructed a research model by utilizing social capital theory. Ultimately cooperation within research and development teams in textile industry in Uzbekistan was assessed. A survey method was applied and a questionnaire was developed and administered to. Structural Equation Modelling together with multiple regression was used to test the predictive value of our model on the sample of 170 Research and development department members. Findings suggest there is a large positive impact of social capital on cooperation. Therefore, the study confirms the value of social capital in explaining cooperation. The study helps managers and team members to better understand the importance of social capital generation on projects and in organizations. The developed concept can be used as a framework for facilitating cooperation for governments, research institutions, academic institutions and companies.

Drawing on the pure theory of local expenditure and fiscal federalism theory, we investigated whether fiscal horizontal transfers are antecedents of fiscal autonomy in local government. Moreover, it was also examined if public-private-partnerships possibly mediate the fiscal horizontal transfers-fiscal autonomy relationship. In order to test the hypothesized model, data were collected from 27 districts, 9 municipalities and 243 sub-counties scattered in the eastern region of Uganda, East Africa. Over the years, the country has been applauded for its relatively efficient fiscal federalism system in the region. Data were then subjected to both regression and structural equation modeling statistical analysis. Results indicated that fiscal horizontal transfers predict changes in fiscal autonomy and public-private-partnerships have an intervening influence on the fiscal horizontal transfers-fiscal autonomy linkages. Implications to both theory and practice are accordingly discussed and future research path is proposed.

With the real-time communications prevalent in Facebook, it has been emerged as an increasingly popular social media that facilitates the bridging and bonding of social capital. This study reviews the consequences of service qualities for social capital through multidimensional service quality and social capital theory. Desired information is collected using a structured questionnaire comprising items of Facebook outcome quality, environment quality, interaction quality, satisfaction, usage intention, bridging, and bonding social capital, and analysed by the structural equation modelling. Results confirm that outcome and environment quality have significant positive influence on users’ satisfaction and usage intention. Meanwhile, bridging and bonding social capital are highly predicted by satisfaction and usage intention, leading to the conclusion that Facebook helps to build and maintain social capital by increasing satisfaction and usage intention. The findings provide valuable insights for practitioners to shape a more balanced job-social capital relationship by adjusting service quality dimensions.
