Background: Consumption of traditional herbal beverages has been generally increased in the last decades, Terebinth coffee, known as ‘‘menengic coffee’’ in Turkish, is one of the most consumed herbal coffees in Turkey, turpentine tree is one of the components of the Mediterranean bush, particularly in Algeria, known as Betoum el Kiffan is largely used as food and in traditional medicine. Aims: In this study, Total phenol, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity of three extracts of Pistacia trebinthus fruit growing in Algeria was measured using radical scavenging activity tests and metal-related tests including, ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The chemical composition profile of the fruits and the coffee brands was identified by thin-layer chromatography, the effects of roasting method of this fruit was rivaled also. Materials and Methods: The total phenolic content of the extracts was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. All extracts of the terebinth fruits and coffee brands displayed a high DPPH scavenging effect. Results: The results of the ferric-reducing antioxidant power show that the reduction capacity is proportional to the increase in the concentration of the samples. All the extracts of the plant exhibit antioxidant activities lower than those of the reference product besides the infusion extract of the P. terebinthus roasted coffee, which is the most active with an optical density of 1.68 nm at a concentration of 400 μg/mL. The chromatography results show that the various extracts of Pistacia terebinthus fruit carry a large number of polyphenols, in particular the carboxylic acids phenols. Conclusions: The plant can be considered as a coffee substitute and opens up promising avenues for the food and pharmaceutical industry in Algeria. AbstractWe conducted this study to determine and compare the content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids in the argan and olive leaves as well as their antioxidant capacity in aqueous, methanolic, and ethyl acetate extracted fractions. In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated in comparison with synthetic antioxidants by assessing DPPH• radical scavenging capacity, ferric reducing antioxidant power, scavenging ability by inhibiting the β-carotene/linoleic acid emulsion oxidation, and by the ABTS radical scavenging activity assay. Total phenolic content in argan samples ranged from 221.69 ± 2.07 to 1.32 ± 0.01 mg GAE/g DW and in olive samples from 144.61 ± 0.82 to 1.21 ± 0.02 mg GAE/g DW. Total flavonoids content in argan samples varied from 267.37 ± 1.12 to 25.48 ± 0.02 mg QE/g DW, while in olives from 96.06 ± 0.78 to 10.63 ± 0.05 mg QE/g DW. In vitro antioxidant studies strongly confirmed the antioxidant potency of argan and olive leaves and their richness in secondary metabolites that are effective in free radicals scavenging and metal chelating capacities, indicating their antioxidant power.

Citrus. reticulata Blanco cv. Suavissima friut has long been regarded as a food and medicinal plant. We investigated the antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract of peel and pulp part of fruit growned in Zhejiang Province, PR. China by several in-vitro systems of assay, namely DPPH radical-scavenging activity, ABTS.+ radical-scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Total phenolic content was measured by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The total flavonoids contents were measured using a modified colorimetric method.The extracts of different samples were found to have different levels of antioxidant activity in the systems tested. Ethanol extracts of the fruit showed stronger antioxidant activities compared with those of the commercial compound (Trolox). The results suggest that Citrus. reticulata Blanco cv. Suavissima friut can be a good source of natural antioxidant.

Aims: This study was intended to investigate and quantify the phytochemicals and the antioxidant activities of fresh and powdered wheatgrass. Study Design:  The experiment was performed by solvent extraction technique for determining the phytochemicals of wheatgrass samples. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at the Food engineering laboratory in Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur, Bangladesh between June 2018 and December 2018. Methodology: Fresh and powdered wheatgrass were used for the experiment. Methanol and ethanol solutions were separately utilized, in an attempt to assume the efficient solvent for extraction. UV-Vis spectrophotometric methods were employed in general throughout the study. Total phenolic contents (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), DPPH scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and the total chlorophyll contents of both solvent extracts were analyzed. Results: Phytochemicals and antioxidant activity were found lower in both solvent extracts of powdered wheatgrass than fresh leaves. Phenolic content and Chlorophyll were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in fresh samples (extracts). Due to heating, a significant decrease was observed in the DPPH radical scavenging activity of powdered extracts. Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in methanolic extracts than in ethanolic extracts. No significant (P > 0.05) difference was observed in total flavonoids contents. Conclusion: These findings endorsed that both solvents demonstrate competitive potentials to extract bioactive compounds from wheatgrass and its derivatives and hence can be chosen specifically according to the components.

The Zanthoxylum avicennae 95% EtoH extracts after concentration were dissolved in H2O and extracted with EtoAc and n-BuOH Successively. The n-BuOH layer was added to Diaion HP-20 macroporous resin column, then the resin was washed by distilled water to get rid of impurity, then washed by 20%, 40% and 60% methanol individually, and obtained M20, M40and M60respectively. And antioxidant activity was assessed using three methods: DPPH radical-scavenging activity, ABTS+radical-scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. The results indicate that TEAC value of M40were higher than other part extracted from Zanthoxylum avicennae 95% EtoH extracts during three methods .The results of the experiments also can find M40is the strongest antioxidant activity part in Zanthoxylum avicennae 95% EtoH extracts and provide reference for further isolating the part M40.

Antioxidant plays an important role in inhibiting and scavenging radicals, thus providing protection for human against infection and degenerative diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the solvent on the extraction of the antioxidant compounds from Careya arborea (CA) Roxb. The leaves of CA were extracted by using water, ethanol, methanol, and chloroform. The total phenolic content of the extracts was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and their antioxidant activity was measured using 2, 2-diphenyl-1 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) methods. The antioxidant activities of the extracts for DPPH and FRAP were in the order: water > methanol > ethanol > chloroform extract. According to the results, water is the most suitable solvent for extraction of active substances with antioxidant activities.

The ethanolic extracts of different parts of Anisophyllea disticha were tested for antimicrobial capability using disc diffusion assay. The result revealed positive growth inhibitory activity, but was considered weak for all extracts against Gram positive bacteria. Leaf extract displayed the highest zone of inhibition with values of 10.67 ± 0.58 and 8.67 ± 0.58 mm against Staphylococcus epidermidis and S. aureus, respectively. On the other hand, stem showed the highest amount of total phenolic content (TPC) (27.73 ± 4.10 mg GAE/g extract) and similar trend was also observed in antioxidant potential in terms of DPPH radical scavenging activity (66.20 ± 11.74%) and ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP) (203.63 ± 16.03 mg Fe(II)/g extract). High positive correlation was found between TPC and antioxidant activities, suggesting that phenolic compounds contribute to the antioxidant power of plant extracts. HPLC analysis identified and quantified gallic acid, p-coumaric, ferulic acid and quercetin in the extracts. Bangladesh J. Bot. 50(3): 515-521, 2021 (September)

This study was aimed to evaluate the cytotoxicity of methanolic extract (ME) and aqueous extract (AE) of the rhizomes of Bergenia purpurascens through the Brine-shrimp bioassay, which revealed that ME possessed cytotoxicity with LC50 = 181.97 ìg/ml value. The plant extracts were also evaluated in vitro for antioxidant activity using different redox [Folin-Ciocalteu (FC) and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP)] and radical scavenging [(2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2’-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS)] assays. Both ME and AE possessed antioxidant activity and ME displayed comparatively a greater potential. The total phenolic contents in ME and AE was 1.27 and 0.06 g gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100 g dry mass (DM), respectively. The FRAP values determined for ME and AE were 15.82 and 2.58 ìmol Fe(II)/100 g DM, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging effect (IC50) was for ME 19.86 ìg/ml and 295.91 ìg/ml for AE. At 100 ìg/ml concentration, up to 94% inhibition of ABTS+ was observed in 6 min incubation. A systematic study was conducted about the solvent effect on the purslane total phenolic, flavonoid, alkaloid, carotenoid, saponin, vitamin E, and vitamin C contents as well as to evaluate their contribution to overall antioxidant activity. Among three solvents investigated, water could extract the highest levels of solid and saponin contents, whereas methanol was more effective for obtaining phenolic, flavonoid, and alkaloid compounds than other solvents. Meanwhile, ethanol was the best choice for extracting carotenoids and vitamin E. In various experimental models including DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS+ radical scavenging activity, and ferric reducing antioxidant power, methanol extract consistently showed significantly greater antioxidant activity than other extracts, while ethanol extract provided the most efficient inhibiting activity against ferrous chloride-induced oxidation of linoleic acid. In addition, the scavenging efficiency of ethanol extract toward DPPH and ABTS+ radicals was significantly higher than the water extract, and vice versa was the case for ferric reducing antioxidant power. Overall, methanol was found to be the most favorable solvent for the extraction of phenolic, flavonoid, and alkaloid compounds that are promising as natural antioxidants. However, different solvents may be used to extract specific antioxidant compounds with distinctive antioxidant activity.

The purpose of the current study was to determine the phenolic composition, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities in grape cane extracts from typical cultivars of Southern Italy. Aqueous extracts at different pHs (1–13) were prepared from “Aglianico”, “Fiano”, and “Greco” grape canes. The results demonstrated that an alkaline pH (13.00) produced the best polyphenol-rich extracts, as the total phenolic content was more than double when compared to the respective extracts prepared at pH 1.00. “Greco” grape canes gave the highest quantity of phenolic compounds at each pH, ranging from 42.7 ± 0.4 to 104.3 ± 3.0 mg Gallic Acid Equivalents (GAE)/g Dry Extract (DE) from pH 1.00 to 13.00. The Radical Scavenging Activity (RSA) and the Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) were measured. The highest antioxidant activity was showed by “Greco” extract at pH 7.00. Seventy-five compounds were identified in the extracts by HPLC-MS with six of them described for the first time in grape canes. Procyanidins were highly abundant in extracts at pH 7.00, whereas stilbenoids were the most represented compounds at pH 13.00. Very strong antiviral activity against herpes simplex viruses was recorded for the extracts at pH 7.00 and 13.00 that were active in the early stages of infection by acting directly against the viral particles. The overall results suggest that grape canes, currently underutilized, can be usefully valorised by providing active extracts to use as antioxidant and antiviral agents.

Antioxidant activities of wampee peel extracts using five different solvents (ethanol, hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol and water) were determined by using in-vitro antioxidant models including total antioxidant capability, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, reducing power, and superoxide scavenging activity. Ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) exhibited the highest antioxidant activity compared to other fractions, even higher than synthetic antioxidant butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT). In addition, the EAF exhibited strong anticancer activities against human gastric carcinoma (SGC-7901), human hepatocellular liver carcinoma (HepG-2) and human lung adenocarcinoma (A-549) cancer cell lines, higher than cisplatin, a conventional anticancer drug. The total phenolic content of wampee fraction was positively correlated with the antioxidant activity. This is the first report on the antioxidant and anticancer activities of the wampee peel extract. Thus, wampee peel can be used potentially as a readily accessible source of natural antioxidants and a possible pharmaceutical supplement.
