This letter aims to explain the importance of using cell phones to take helpful images with high efficiency in various types of dental procedures. In our dental practices’ photography is an effective tool. Its applications are widespread such as in the diagnosis and treatment planning, keeping an illustrative clinical history, legal documentation, publishing, and delivering lectures.1 In modern dentistry, photography has grown into a standard of treatment. With the advent of digital technology these days, photography has now become simpler and widely available. Even then, few practitioners introduce them in their daily practices due to reasons such as a lack of expertise in cameras, lenses, and technique, disruption of workflow, and cost considerations. The use of smartphones with improved technology, however, is constantly emerging. It allows every practitioner with minimal interruptions in their patient workflow to incorporate photography into his or her practice.2 Making images from mobile in dentistry has multi-level importance. Its implementation in dental practice is simple, swift, and extremely useful in recording working practices, conducting health promotion sessions, and administering clinical examinations, thus providing dentists and patients with many advantages.1-2

Background: Understanding the collective sociotechnical experiences of the staff in dental practices with automatic washer disinfectors (AWDs) may help shape future strategies that encourage the transition towards best practice in dental instrument decontamination and reprocessing. Objectives: To find the emerging themes that reflect the experience of working with an AWD in dental practice. To compare the experience of practice owners to that of the dental nurses. Methods: A qualitative semi-structured interview-based methodology was applied using a convenience sample of dentists and dental nurses. Verbatim transcripts of audio recordings underwent thematic analysis. Results: Dental practice owners and dental nurses were interviewed. Four themes were common to both groups: impact on daily routine; mundane technology; the decontamination cycle; and safety. Three themes were unique to the dentists: impact on the business; professionalism; and external motivators for change. Discussion: AWDs are a mundane form of technology that dental nurses find simple to operate. The extended time it takes to reprocess instruments using an AWD means that dental nurses must adapt their daily working practices to accommodate this. Initial funding to purchase an AWD, especially where there is a professional expert leading a campaign championing their use, can be effective.

Introduction The COVID-pandemic does not leave the dental practice unattended. The objective is to analyze why the COVID-19 pandemic urges changes in daily dental practice in the Belgian context. Methodology The Leuven University Hospital’s view is based on Belgian and Leuven University data and existing guidelines concerning hygiene measures in dental practices. The approach chosen is a narrative qualitative approach. Results Although no transmission of COVID-19 has been reported in Belgian dental practices, the number of health care workers infected and deceased urges for safety measures. Conclusions In the absence of a vaccine and of reliable data about the infectivity of droplet and droplet cores, dental procedures causing aerosol should be considered as possible sources of viral spread when treating contagious patients, symptomatic or asymptomatic.

In the wake of the current outbreak of novel Covid-19, which is now declared as a 'pandemic' by the WHO, people around the globe have been dealing with a lot of difficulties. This virus had come into light in December 2019 and since then has only grown exponentially. Amongst the most affected are the ones who have been working extremely hard to eradicate it, which includes the hospitals, dental fraternity and the health-care workers. These people are financially burdened due to limited practise. In the case of dentistry, to avoid the spread of the virus, only emergency treatments are being approved, and the rest of the standard procedures have been put on hold. In some cases, as the number of covid cases is rising, many countries are even trying to eliminate the emergency dental procedures to divert the finances towards the treatment of covid suffering patients. What we need to realise is that this is probably not the last time that we are facing such a situation. Instead of going down, we should set up guidelines with appropriate precautionary measures together with the use of standardised PPEs. The government should also establish specific policies to support dental practices and other health-care providers. Together, we can fight this pandemic and come out stronger.

Abstract Background Implant treatment using guided surgery is becoming widespread in clinical dental practice. Furthermore, the development of digital technology has enabled the use of intraoral scanners (IOSs) to fabricate surgical guide plates. The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of guided surgery using the silicone impression method with a three-dimensional (3D) scanner and the digital impression method with IOS for one side of the mandibular free end. In addition, we compared the accuracy of tooth-supported vs tooth/mucosa-supported surgical guide plates. Results The accuracy of the tooth-supported surgical guide plate using the new IOS method instead of the method of obtaining impressions with conventional silicone resulted in better measurements of 3D deviation at the crest, 3D deviation at the apex, and angular deviation. In terms of the accuracy of the tooth/mucosa-supported surgical guide plate, there were no significant differences in all measurements. The surgical guide plate using an IOS and the tooth/mucosa-supported surgical guide plate may enable more accurate guided surgery. Conclusion Tooth/mucosa-supported guided surgery involving preparation with an IOS may result in more accurate implant surgery.

Abstract The risk for complications while providing dental procedures is greatest when caring for patients having significant medical compromise. It is comforting that significant adverse events can generally be prevented by careful preoperative assessment, along with attentive intraoperative monitoring and support. Nevertheless, the office team must be prepared to manage untoward events should they arise. This continuing education article will address basic emergency drugs that should be available in all dental practices and additional agents that become essential for those practices providing various levels of procedural sedation or general anesthesia.

The current global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak is still exerting severe global implications, and its development in various regions is complex and variable. The high risk of cross-infection poses a great challenge to the dental practice environment; it is therefore urgent to develop a set of pandemic prevention measures to ensure dental practice safety during the COVID-19 outbreak. Therefore, we combined the epidemiological characteristics of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), public emergency measures for COVID-19, characteristics of dental practice, and relevant literature reports to develop a set of dynamic practice measures for dental practices in high-, medium-, and low-risk areas affected by COVID-19. This will help dental practices to achieve standard prevention and ensure their safe and smooth operation during the pandemic. It is hoped that these measures will provide a reference basis for dental hospitals and dental clinics in their care and pandemic prevention work.

The news media are presently filled with headline stories concerning the security of electronic communications and the internet. The Financial Times’ weekend supplement FT Money devoted three pages under the title ‘Hack attack’ and asked whether companies are doing enough to protect data online. 1 Substitute dental practices for companies and we have an unhappy picture of the reasons why so much sensitive personal data is going missing or being accessed without properly informed consent.


This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of several aspects of oral surgery. It starts with some general principles that are applicable to all types of surgery and gradually includes details of common dental procedures. There is emphasis on suturing and dento-alveolar surgery including third molar surgery. More specialized procedures such as an apicectomy and a coronectomy are also described. The aim is to provide guidance that will help with the pre-operative assessment, as well as details of the specific oral surgery techniques. Clinicians in general dental practice and dental core trainees in hospitals often encounter patients with dento-alveolar infections as well as benign soft tissue or bone pathologies. This chapter provides the foundations of management of these conditions.

Abstract Background The highly contagious nature of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2), besides the fact that dental procedures commonly generate blood and saliva droplets that could lead to the contagion have resulted in the closure of many dental clinics. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on dental practice by conducting an online questionnaire among the Iranian dental practitioners and finding their perspectives on the subject. Methods This report is based on a questionnaire that was conducted among Iranian dentists. The survey included questions that evaluate the dentists’ perceptions and attitudes toward the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on their personal life, financial status, and the quality of dental services for patients. Results Overall, 240 dentists contributed to this study (214 general dentists and 26 specialists). The majority of the participants (n = 170, 70%) did not perform non-emergency procedures during the pandemic. The dental practitioners have suggested several strategies to decrease the risk of contagion, such as reducing treatment sessions (n = 90, 37%), strict triage of patients (n = 156, 64%), and using personal protective equipment (n = 108, 45%). However, most of the dentists (n = 210, 87%) had problems, providing personal protective equipment during the pandemic. Moreover, 97% (n = 234) of the participants reported that they encountered a decrease in their financial income since the eruption of the pandemic. Conclusion Dental health care workers are at the highest risk of contracting COVID-19. Thus, dental practitioners ought to execute the standard protocols more cautiously during the pandemic. They could also lower their work hours and limit dental procedures to emergency treatments to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Besides, the public organizations should provide proper equipment for the dental practitioners to decrease the risk of contagion.

Composite dust generation is most likely a continuous and daily procedure in dental practice settings. The aim of this systematic review was to identify, compile and evaluate existing evidence on interventions and composite material properties related to the production of aerosolized dust during routine dental procedures. Seven electronic databases were searched, with no limits, supplemented by a manual search, on 27 April 2020 for published and unpublished research. Eligibility criteria comprised of studies of any design, describing composite dust production related to the implementation of any procedure in dental practice. Study selection, data extraction and risk of bias (RoB) assessment was undertaken independently either in duplicate, or confirmed by a second reviewer. Random effects meta-analyses of standardized mean differences (SMD) with associated 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were employed where applicable. A total of 375 articles were initially identified, resulting in 13 articles being included in the qualitative synthesis, of which 5 contributed to meta-analyses overall. Risk of bias recordings ranged between low and high, pertaining to unclear/raising some concerns, in most cases. All types of composites, irrespective of the filler particles, released significant amounts of nano-sized particles after being ground, with potentially disruptive respiratory effects. Evidence supported increased % distribution of particles < 100 nm for nanocomposite Filtek Supreme XTE compared to both conventional hybrid Z100MP (SMD: 1.96, 95% CI: 0.85, 3.07; p-value; 0.001) and nano- hybrid Tetric EvoCeram (SMD: 1.62, 95% CI: 0.56, 2.68; p-value: 0.003). For cytotoxicity considerations of generated aerosolized particles, both nanocomposites Filtek Supreme XTE and nanohybrid GradiO revealed negative effects on bronchial epithelial cell viability, as represented by % formazan reduction at 330–400 μg/mL for 24 hours, with no recorded differences between them (SMD: 0.19; 95% CI: −0.17, 0.55; p-value: 0.30). Effective and more rigorous management of dental procedures potentially liable to the generation of considerable amounts of aerosolized composite dust should be prioritized in contemporary dental practice. In essence, protective measures for the clinician and the practices’ personnel should also be systematically promoted and additional interventions may be considered in view of the existing evidence.
