Anxiety is recognized as a potential risk factor for false-positive result derived from radiological image. This study investigated patients’ anxiety levels on exposure to computer tomography and experience of claustrophobia. The study adopts a correlation research design. A total of 96 patients made-up of 49 males (50%) and 47 females (48%) subjects undergoing CT scan examination at the Radiology Department of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi was recruited for this study. Participants responded to STAI (Form-1) a Nigerian re-standardized version and Radomsky’s Claustrophobia questionnaire. The results of the analysis shows that; there is a strong positive correlation between patients’ levels of anxiety and exposure to computer tomography examination including normal anxiety of r (96) = .812, p< .0.01), mild anxiety level r (96) = .823, p< .0.01), moderate anxiety level r (96)= .746, p< .0.01), severe anxiety r(96) = .669, p< .0.01), and extremely severe anxiety level, r (96) = .220, p<. 0.01). However, there is a negative correlation between patients’ exposure to computer tomography examination and experience of claustrophobia, r (96) = -.18, p< .0.01). There is also a significant difference between male and female levels of anxiety and experience of claustrophobia during exposure to CT scan examination, with males score (M=20.4082, SD=2.39721, N=96) and females score (M=21.1489, SD= 3.03586), t (94) = -1.330, p< .05) for anxiety, males score (M=43.0213, SD=12.04609), and females score (M=42.2979, SD=11.89248) on exposure to CT scan t (94) = .293, p< .05) claustrophobia symptoms, males score (M=15.7083, SD=14.02878) females score (M=13.9149, SD=10.75989), t (94) = .698, p< .05). The study proved that anxiety and claustrophobia is commonly experienced by patients undergoing CT scan examination. Hence, pre-counselling/education should always be used to prepare as well as mitigate anxiety related reactions in patients prior to CT scan in order to achieve a successful outcome of the procedure.

Background: Surgery is one of medical interventions which can cause fear, anxiety, and stressed because of its effects toward the integrity of body and soul. Nurses have significant roles in any preoperative care which is helping patients to decrease preoperative anxiety by using complementary therapy. The use of music therapy as one of the complementary therapies is not common in Indonesia. Therefore, scientific studies to prove the role of this therapy to decrease the level of anxiety of pre-operative patients is needed. Objective: To investigate the effects of music therapy in reducing anxiety levels of preoperative patients. Methods: A quasy experimental study with pre-test and post-test design with control group was applied to 50 respondents from medical ward in Panembahan Senopati Hospital of Yogyakarta who met the inclusion criteria.Dara were then analyzed by using t-test statistical analysis. Results: The control group showed the increased value of anxiety level of0.8 without music intervention (t= - 1503, df = 24, p<.05), whereas the intervention group showed the decreased value of anxiety level of -5.52 (t=5.081, df=24, p<.05). Meanwhile the independent t-test results for both groups showed a significant difference between group (t= 3,373, df=48, p<.05). Conclusion: Music therapy has significant effect in reducing preoperative anxiety levels of patients. Keywords: anxiety, preoperative, music therapy

The prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Bangladesh is 35% among all liver diseases. Sonographic examinations were performed for the evaluation of 38 cases of HCC; then, CT examina-tions were done of these cases subsequently. Expert opinion was taken in each case for both modalities. Age, sex, clinical features, location of the hepatic lesion, multiplicity, echo-character, CT density, and, contrast enhancement were evaluated in all cases. Histocytopathology reports were collected from the patients and were correlated with the ultrasonography and CT findings. Thirty five cases were detected as HCC on ultrasonography and 36 cases in CT scan. In ultrasonography, most of the lesions (82.9%) were found in right lobe, maximum lesions (45.7%) were hypoechoic and lesion showed mosaic pattern in 68.6% cases, lateral shadowing in 34.3% and posterior acoustic enhancement in 45.7% cases. Significant difference found between mosaic pattern and lateral shadowing (p<0.05). On CT scan, majority of lesions (50%) were hypodense, 91.7% lesions were contrast enhanced. Pattern of enhancement was mostly heterogeneous. Both of the modalities found sensitive but CT was found more sensitive, specific and accurate than ultrasonography in detecting HCC.  Keywords: Computer tomography; Cytohistopathological; Hepatocellular carcinoma; UltrasonographyDOI: 10.3329/bmrcb.v33i2.1209Bangladesh Med Res Counc Bull 2007; 33: 73-77

The present study investigated the relationship between writing anxiety with gender, writing self-efficacy and writing achievement, since this issue is quite common in foreign language classrooms and usually has a negative effect on students’ writing performance. The participants were 21 intermediate level students at a state university in Turkey. An independent samples t-test found no significant difference between the writing anxiety levels of males and females. A statistically significant negative correlation between writing anxiety and writing self-efficacy levels of the students was found in the correlation analysis. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) found a significant difference among three achievement groups regarding their writing anxiety levels. Lastly, the results of the two-way ANOVA indicated a main effect of writing anxiety on students’ actual written competence/skills but there was no main effect of gender. Moreover, the interactional effect of gender and writing anxiety was not statistically significant. These results indicate that although there is no relationship between students' gender and their writing anxiety level, students' writing achievement and writing self-efficacy have an effect on their writing anxiety level. This study also calls for more student-centred and process-oriented approaches in language classrooms.   Keywords: Writing anxiety; gender; writing self-efficacy; writing achievement

Abstract: This research aims to determine differences in student anxiety levels based on gender and the relationship between students' anxiety levels before facing a mathematical test with achievement and then dig deeper information about the causes of anxiety in students. This research uses a mixed method with a sequential explanatory approach. The subjects of this study were students of class X MIA Kerinci Senior High School 2 totaling 100 students. The results of the research showed that students experiencing anxiety before taking a math test as the cause of anxiety is experience, intelligence, preparation, and family. Differences in levels of anxiety based on gender indicate that there is no significant difference between the level of anxiety experienced by male and female students but male students are more anxious than female students the cause is that there have been similar thoughts and goals in terms of achievement so as to make male students neither men nor women experience significant differences in anxiety levels. There is a relationship between the level of anxiety with learning outcomes of 0.43 which is in the category enough and has a positive relationship, namely the higher the level of anxiety, the higher the student learning outcomes. Descriptions of quantitative data indicate that there is no certainty for someone who has an anxiety level will get a definite value. Keywords: Mathematical Anxiety Level, Gender, Achievement
