Background: Substance use treatment has long traditions in Norway, but it was not until 2004 that it became part of the specialist health service, leading to new leadership requirements. The aim of this study was to understand how the field is perceived from a leadership perspective and how leaders perceive their leadership role. Method: The study is based on three focus group interviews with the mentors of 28 network groups. Data were analysed through systematic text condensation. Results: The analysis resulted in a clustering of four aspects the informants reported to characterise their perceptions of their leadership role: the inferiority complex, values ​​in substance use treatment, pragmatic leadership, and subjective leadership. Implications: The analysis shows that informal hierarchies of power, ideology, and expectations of interdisciplinarity in all decisions provide fertile ground for a flat structure and ambiguity in management. The findings reveal the need for measures to strengthen recognition of the field and develop the leadership role. This study is conducted within the context of nursing colleges and focuses on the empowerment of educational staff in a nursing college to facilitate excellence in leadership practice. A qualitative exploratory and descriptive study was conducted in different phases: the views and expectations of educational staff as leaders, as well as the views and expectations of the fourth year students as followers and potential professional leaders were explored and described by means of focus group interviews. A provisional conceptual framework for leadership development in a nursing college was compiled, exposed to a literature control and a final conceptual framework was refined, together with guidelines for leadership development in a nursing college. This article focuses on the final conceptual framework as well as the programme for leadership development in a nursing college. It is recommended that this programme be implemented and exposed to purposeful evaluation.

This chapter explores the concepts of leadership relevant to and as applied in public health practice. It looks at various concepts of leadership, frameworks for developing public health leaders, leadership development, and explores how one’s leadership practice and values evolve across their career and life course. It draws upon examples and case studies of public health leadership at global, national, and local levels; in a variety of organizations; and in various contexts to illustrate the diversity of leadership challenges, approaches, and applications. As with other public health skills, effective leadership may be taught, evaluated, and developed, with an individual’s comfort and competence with their preferred and alternative leadership styles evolving over time. This is however highly dependent upon one’s professional ambition, engagement, experience, environment, opportunities, and challenges, both in professional and private spheres. The chapter ends by exploring the principles of authentic leadership, reinforcing the importance of practitioners, at whatever phase in their career, understanding their core values, life purpose, and aligning with their day-to-day practices and the organization’s priorities. While not everyone will currently or ever be in a senior executive leadership role, many aspire to do so at some stage in their career, and everyone working in public health will be called upon to lead an activity at some stage—whether a project, administrative task, strategy, or analysis. So, leadership is ultimately everyone’s business, and the time to prepare by laying strong foundations is now. Leadership is a craft that can be learnt, nurtured, and shared, but it will be for the individual to decide when, where and how they are being called to do so, and ultimately what their answer will be.

This study explores patients’ opportunities for collective participation in an institution for people with substance use disorder. Patients and staff from the treatment institution cooperated with researchers to make changes in the treatment practice, using a research circle as a model for the project. In the article, we discuss the following research questions: How and in what areas did patients have the opportunity to participate collectively in the treatment institution? How did the patients experience participation in the research circle? Data consist of minutes from meetings, seminars, and focus-group interviews. The participants analysed the material together, and the authors carried out a thematic analysis after the project. The participants chose to explore how milieu therapy could build a bridge from treatment in the institution to life after treatment, a “Bridge over troubled waters”, to quote Simon and Garfunkel. Findings show that activities in the research circle led to changes at the institution, e.g., regular Sunday afternoon meetings, a weekly quiz, and less controlling procedures of substance use, and that the institutional culture in general became based more on participation and equality. Patients, staff, and researchers participated in a partnership; mutual recognition promoted cooperation and fellowship in the research circle. We conclude that the project provided the participants with opportunities for collective participation in the institution. In addition, the patients experienced partnership and empowerment in the research circle. Our attempts to change institutional practices yielded some improvements but also met with structural and cultural barriers. Thus, the project experienced challenges and obstacles mostly related to limitations in the institutional system and culture.

Immigrants face barriers in seeking and accessing mental health and addiction services. Health professionals are crucial in providing and promoting healthcare and it is important to understand their experiences in order to enhance the access of mental healthcare. The aim of this paper is to explore and describe health professionals’ experiences with treatment engagement among immigrants with co-occurring substance use disorders (SUD) and mental health disorders (MHD) in Norwegian mental health and addiction services. Within a collaborative approach, 3 focus group interviews were conducted with health professionals, who had provided various mental health and addiction care services to immigrants with co-occurring SUD and MHD. The focus group interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using systematic text condensation. The analysis resulted in 5 main categories: (1) difficulties due to language barriers, (2) difficulties due to lack of culturally competent services, (3) difficulties due to social factors, (4) being curious and flexible improves the user-provider relationship, and (5) increasing access to mental health and addiction services. This study provides an enhanced understanding of how health professionals’ experienced treatment engagement among immigrants with co-occurring SUD and MHD in the Norwegian context. Implications of the findings for clinical practice and future research are discussed.

Cross-aged teaching programs provide leadership experiences to youth who aim to influence children to be responsible, caring, and compassionate. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a leadership development protocol on relationship development in an established cross-aged teaching program. Method: Guided by the developmental relationships framework, “Simple Interactions” was implemented with a group of nine youth leaders. The intent was to help them improve their relationships with children in four categories (a) connection, (b) reciprocity, (c) participation, and (d) progression. Data were collected through reflection documents and focus group interviews. Results: Qualitative results explain how Simple Interactions impacted reflection and revealed strategies youth leaders used to build relationships with children. Discussion: The findings suggest that the Simple Interactions protocol may provide an innovative strategy to promote reflective practice and develop positive relationships in a cross-aged teaching program.

Leadership development is an important component of the nursing service manager’s personal and professional development. Competent leadership is required to lead the nursing service in the right direction within the context of dynamic political and social changes. Various internal and external environmental variables have a significant influence on leadership behaviour and practice. The purpose with this study is to explore and describe the characteristics or dimensions of leadership excellence by the nursing service manager. An exporatory and descriptive research design was followed and data collection was done by means of focus group interviews. The results do not show a significant difference between the knowledge already generated by research, or described in the literature, but is utilised as the basis of leadership development of nursing service managers. A leadership development programme for nursing service managers, based on the results of this study, is recommended.
