The study is devoted to a comparative analysis of the original and translated texts of the Kalmyk folk tale "Ayu Chikt Avkha Tsetsn khoir" ("Ayu Chikte and Avkha Tsetsen") from the repertoire of the narrator M. Burinov. In the process of comparing the original text of the fairy tale in the Kalmyk language (1960) and the Russian translation by M. G. Vatagina (1964) notes the nature of the discrepancies and inaccuracies found in the foreign language narrative in the transfer of the meaning of individual episodes of the plot, formula expressions, word combinations), which play an important role in the fairy tale narration. The study of a folklore text in its multilingual embodiments is relevant in the light of the problems that arise within the interaction of texts of distant cultures. To convey the national specifics of the fairy - tale tradition, maximum accuracy is required when translating episodes, formulas and some words that are important for understanding the original meaning of an original text.

The article gives an analysis of the first Russian translation of Abelard and Héloïse’s letters (The Collection of Abelard and Héloïse’s Letters with the Life Description of These Miserable Lovers) made by A.I. Dmitriev in 1783 from Count Bussy-Raboutin’s French retelling. A comparative analysis of Dmitriev’s translation with the original text shows the conventional character of their connection. Following Bussy, Dmitriev not always sticks to the Latin original even in the main storylines. Even if he retains the canvas of the original medieval text, he supplements it with countless details: a portrait of a lover, a tear-drenched letter, mad passion. A similar transformation takes place with the Historia Calamitatum in the retelling made by Augustus von Kotzebue. In prefaces both authors designate their works as “female” reading. The interest in the story of two lovers is probably caused by the recent release of J.-J. Rousseau’s Julie, or the New Heloise. The choice of material, the nature of its adaptation, the appeal to women and the circumstances of the publication of Dmitriev’s translation and Kotzebue’s retelling demonstrate the commitment of these authors to sentimentalism, which explains their desire to cause tears in the eyes of their readers.

The subject of this research is actualization of the value component of Japanese culture on the periphery of the original Japanese folkloreme “Issun-bōshi” in the nine English-language versions of eponymous fairy tale. The article examines the methods of verbal explication on the discourse level through the dialogues, descriptions, and events of the original Japanese fairy tale and its English interpretations. The author determines seven axiological characteristics of the Japanese folkloreme, such as acceptance, dependence, modesty, service, etc. It is demonstrated how depending on the dialogues and descriptions in different versions of the Japanese folk tale, the value orientations of Japanese culture are explicated inalterably or adjusted to the perceptions of the author of English version. The conducted research reveals the specificity of one culture through another language and culture, as well as variability of presentation of the value orientations, attitudes, and preferences through the prism of mentality and values of the author of the foreign-language version. The following axiological components of Japanese folkloreme were determined: designated environment; love and acceptance; service to the emperor; family ties; modesty; spiritual beauty; and the folkloreme of magic gavel. The author carries out a comparative analysis of explication of the Japanese folkloreme in different English versions of the fairy tale; reveals the axiological components explicated in the text of Issun-bōshi and the differences in value orientations described in the English versions of the fairy tale.

In the present article for the first time the contribution of Tamerlan Alexandrovich Guriev to the science of translation is evaluated, points of view of the famous Ossetian scientist on general and special issues of literary translation in his research works are provided. On the example of translations of lyrical works by A. Pushkin, G. Maliev, W. Shakespeare T. A. Guriev’s approach to solving the linguistic problems of literary translation is considered, particularly, transferring of archaic words, phraseological units, proper names, interjections in the translated text. Special attention is paid to the comparative analysis of «The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish» by A. S. Pushkin in the original and its translation into the Ossetian language. In the Ossetian-language version of A. S. Pushkin’s fairy tale T. A. Guriev managed to reproduce the genre features of the text, to preserve the elements of the original structure, its punctuation, and the details of the narration. Careful approach to the reproduction of the language and form of the original verse allowed the translator to achieve structural and semantic correspondence in the translated text. Creative translator’s talent of T. A. Guriev is evident in the way he deals with archaic words, words-realities, idioms, evaluative lexemes. To transfer them the translator uses hyponymic translation, assimilated translation, explication, functional substitution, calques, mechanical transference and compensation method. The translation reflects the national-historical character, stylistic features of the original text. When translating archaisms translator Guriev resorted to the use of lexical equivalents in the translation, and compensated the unit of translation elsewhere to achieve balance. The translation transformations made it possible to preserve in the translation the communicative equivalence of the original text, one of the dominant components of literary translation.

The results of a comparative analysis of multilingual texts - the original and the translation - of poetic works by Ossetian authors (M. Tsirikhova, A. Tsarukaev, R. Asaev, G. Dzugaev, H.-M. Dzuzzati, D. Darchieva, T. Tettsoeva) in the light of the translation interpretation by famous Russian poets of the sixties (E. Evtushenko, B. Akhmadulina, R. Kazakova, B. Okudzhava, Yu. Morits) are presented. In the course of comparative analysis, it was found that some translators resorted to adapted rethinking of the lines of a foreign language text (Yu. Morits, B. Akhmadulina). It was shown that for this purpose, in some places, translators violated the formal organization of the verse, expanded the original text by adding stanzas (R. Kazakov) or, conversely, narrowed the verse of the original (B. Okudzhava, B. Akhmadulina), but changes in the structure of the original did not affect the adequate perception of the text to recipients. The features of the implementation of the original pragmatic potential in translation are commented. It is noted that translators not only find lexical means characterized by semantic affinity with the words of the original, but also embody the aesthetic component of the literary text (R. Kazakova, Yu. Moritz) and others. It is stated that some poets deliberately resorted to rethinking the artistic reality captured by the author: in the language of translation, a new work is actually created based on the poem in the original (E. Evtushenko, B. Akhmadulina).

The purpose of the study is to present a comparative analysis and evolution of plot No. 325 “The Magician and his Pupil” in the international catalogues by A. Aarne (1910), Aarne-Thompson (1928 and 1961) and G. Uther (2004), as well as 325 in the national (Russian) catalogues by N. P. Andreev and L. G. Barag, K. P. Kabashnikov and N. V. Novikov (Comparative index of plots: East-Slavic folk-tale). The research leads the author to the following conclusions: 1) the analysis of plot No. 325, starting with the first international catalogue by Aarne (1910) and ending with its latest version by G. Uther (2004), shows the evolution of its plot, the complexity of its scientific apparatus, as well as the wide area of its distribution which confirms the fact of the typological similarity of the plot variants; 2) the study of ATU 325 motifs in Thompson’s catalogue (1961) shows the necessity to introduce a clearer definition of the notion “motif” in the tradition of international catalogues, as well as the unification of its motifs for a clearer description of a fairy tale type; 3) based on the latest achievements of folklore studies in the field of fairy tale research, it becomes necessary to check and update the national catalogue Comparative index of plots: East-Slavic folk-tale, include more modern materials on the study of this plot type, add such sections as Contaminations, Remarks and Literature / Variants after each plot description; 4) a comparative analysis allows us to clarify some points in Plot No. 325 ‘Crafty lore’ (‘The Magician And his Pupil’).

The translator of Dante’s Paradise is faced with a double difficulty. The first results from the limitation—inherent in the human condition—to express the ineffable, which the author experiences; the second stems from the difficulty of language that Dante himself builds in order to overcome the first difficulty. The success or the failure of a translation is measured in terms of how much of the original message the translator manages to make available to the reader in a foreign language, and this percentage can only be revealed by comparative analysis. Therefore, this paper starts from a comparative analysis between the original text of the Paradise and its Romanian translations, with a focus on the contexts that foster the concept of ‘Trinity’; the analysis carried out on the Romanian versions revealed both successful equivalences, semantically and formally faithful to the original, and cases of “betrayal” of the original text.

This book explores the legacy of the Brothers Grimm in Europe and North America, from the nineteenth century to the present. The book reveals how the Grimms came to play a pivotal and unusual role in the evolution of Western folklore and in the history of the most significant cultural genre in the world—the fairy tale. Folklorists Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm sought to discover and preserve a rich abundance of stories emanating from an oral tradition, and encouraged friends, colleagues, and strangers to gather and share these tales. As a result, hundreds of thousands of wonderful folk and fairy tales poured into books throughout Europe and have kept coming. The book looks at the transformation of the Grimms' tales into children's literature, the Americanization of the tales, the “Grimm” aspects of contemporary tales, and the tales' utopian impulses. It shows that the Grimms were not the first scholars to turn their attention to folk tales, but were vital in expanding readership and setting the high standards for folk-tale collecting that continue through the current era. The book concludes with a look at contemporary adaptations of the tales and raises questions about authenticity, target audience, and consumerism. The book examines the lasting universal influence of two brothers and their collected tales on today's storytelling world.
