The metastable zone width of an aqueous solution of KCI was measured as a function of the time and temperature of overheating above the equilibrium solubility temperature. It has been found that when the experiments follow close upon one another, the parameters of the preceding experiment affect the results of the experiment to follow. The results are interpreted in terms of hypotheses advanced in the literature to account for the effect of thermal history of solution. The plausibility and applicability of these hypotheses are assessed for the given cause of aqueous solution of a well soluble electrolyte.

The history of animal-borne instrumentation is reviewed from the first basic depth gauge invented in the late 1800s, to the complex animal-borne imagery and archival systems of the present day. A major breakthrough occurred in 1964 when the first time-depth recorder was deployed on a Weddell Seal in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. The next phase in the study of animals at sea was the use of microprocessors as archival recorders in the mid-1980s. These also were first attached to Weddell seals in McMurdo Sound. Microprocessor technology made possible the next major step of attaching a video camera housed in a submersible case (Crittercam) to a loggerhead turtle. Since the 1990s the field of “Biologging” has flourished, with new additions of satellite and GPS tracking, and resulted in three major international symposiums in the past four years (2003-2007).

This research questions whether considering Māori concepts of architecture and space within the design of New Zealand prisons can help in the rehabilitation process of inmates of Māori descent. First, the general concept of prison architecture will be researched. The panopticon as a general diagram as well as specific case studies will frame an understanding of the characteristics of prison architecture in the western sphere. A specific attention to interior architecture will be established. Second, the link between cultural experience and rehabilitation will be distinguished primarily through analysis of Māori Focus Units. Third, the notions of Māori perception and understanding of architectural space will be explored in a general context. More particularly, characteristics of interior architecture will be researched. Fourth, a site will be selected to reflect the contentious issues of incarceration of the Māori population. Matiu/Somes Island, located in the Wellington harbour, is a reflection of historical Māori culture and lifestyles that form a base of beliefs and mythology that modern Māori can identify with. The island itself is a provocation due to its history of incarceration. This thesis is of interior architecture; hence the design will be developed within the constraints of a given architectural envelope. While this is an assumed position, the interior architecture will challenge the given envelope and its contextual site. As a consequence, further interventions into the landscape and the architecture will be developed to sustain the interior architecture here developed. It is anticipated that this research will therefore support the idea that interior architecture of New Zealand prisons must be developed as an integral part of a holistic spatial intervention in view of supporting the rehabilitation process of Māori inmates.

Owing to its geopolitical position, history of shifting borders, and multiethnic-multilingual population, Transcarpathia provides a convenient environment to study how ethnicity interplays with the economy. The present research aims to examine the role of formal and informal ethnic social capital in the life of Transcarpathian enterprises. The research is based on mainly semi-structured interviews conducted with foreign investors in Transcarpathia and with local Transcarpathian Hungarian entrepreneurs as well as with representatives of business organizations related to the given community. I also analyzed economic databases and statistical data. The results of the research imply that informal relationships are essential in the operation of enterprises, however, these relationships are not always organized on an ethnic basis. I argue that institutionalized relations have not played an important role in the case of foreign enterprises. However, among Transcarpathian Hungarian entrepreneurs, the role of formal ethnic relations has increased due to the financial support provided by Hungary.

Abstract The article’s aim is to compare the opposite processes of social exclusion and inclusion in South Africa and in the Czech Republic, in the past and at the present time. Even though these societies differ culturally and geographically, the comparison of some important factors, which are causing the exclusion of some people groups, might be interesting. In both cases we will closely follow the social, ethnic and racial groups, which are mostly excluded in the given environment. In South Africa it concerns Black and Coloured Africans, and in the Czech Republic the Roma ethnic minority group, the only ethnic group which is to a high extent excluded. In the history of these two countries we can find a similar historic aspect, both of them had experienced totalitarian regimes. Today, with the benefit of more twenty years, we can see the changes, which both these countries have undergone, and observe as well how these changes influenced the processes of inclusion and exclusion of the given social, racial and ethnic groups.

Research background: The subsistence minimum category is used in the Slovak Republic in determining several wage and tax categories. In this paper I analyze whether the set standard of living is sufficient with regard to the development of the average wage since 1993 to the present day. Subsequently, the quantities that are based on the subsistence level - non-taxable amounts of the taxpayers’ tax base are also analyzed. The results of the analysis show that the distance between the subsistence level and the level of non-taxable parts has gradually increased. The topic of payrolls and related wage variables is a complex and ever-changing topic. Not many authors in Slovakia pay attention to it, and due to constant changes in the given area, the findings of publications and papers is also limited. Purpose of the article: This paper deals with general theoretical, legal and historical starting points and links between non-taxable parts and the subsistence minimum. The paper presents a cross-section of the history of the application of non-taxable parts in the Slovak Republic. Methods: The method used in the paper is that of hypotheses determination and testing. Findings & Value added: This paper also analyzes the state of national regulation and development trends in the area. In addition to constructive criticism, the article also contains suggestions for improving the current situation.
