Background/Aim: The heavy metals, cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), are often implicated as environmental pollutants. Therefore, the biosorption potential of Pleurotus tuber-regium in lead and cadmium polluted soil was investigated by this work. Methods: Four kilograms of each humus soil sample was weighed into eight different black nursery cellophane bags and polluted with 0.5 g, 1.0 g and 2.0 g of lead and cadmium in triplicate. Pleurotus sclerotia were then planted in these polluted soil samples, and distilled water was added ad libitum. Results: The results showed that the growth performance was dose-related in lead-polluted soil. The Pleurotus tuber regium mushroom in the lead-polluted soil samples indicated a dose-dependent absorbed lead concentration in the results. Cadmium-polluted soil samples did not support the growth of the Pleurotus tuber regium mushroom at the various concentrations of cadmium used after day 30. Therefore, the findings suggest that the Pleurotus tuber regium mushroom and its sclerotia have intrinsic properties for the absorption of lead and cadmium. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the Pleurotus tuber regium mushroom and its sclerotia have intrinsic properties for the absorption of lead and cadmium.

ABSTRACTThe urine of pigs contains a substance with an anorexigenic effect when injected into pigs or rats. When injected into rats or pigs on ad libitum feeding a urine extract caused a reduction in food intake only when the extract had been obtained from the urine of satiated pigs, and not from hungry pigs. The pig urinary anorexigen there-fore appears to be similar in nature to the anorexigen extracted from rat urine. Like rat urinary anorexigen, its anorexigenic effect is largely dose dependent and it is soluble in distilled water. Rats injected with plasma from satiated pigs showed an anorexigenic reaction but injection of plasma from hungry pigs had no effect on food intake. The possible role of these anorexigenic substances in the control of voluntary food intake in the pig is discussed.

A study was undertaken to compare the bones of two fin fish-African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), in the bioremediation of lead polluted soils. Six soil samples containing different sources of lead were collected from Obio-Akpor LGA, Rivers State. African catfish and Tilapia fishes were sourced from the market; the bones were extracted and dried (using a hot oven). The bones were then crushed with a blender, and weighed using analytical measuring scale. The crushed bones were mixed with lead polluted soil samples and left in the laboratory, in cool transparent plates for 3 weeks and 3 days for group one samples, while group two samples were left in the laboratory for 1 week and 3 days. The results revealed that for group one samples; Acid battery soil mixed with Catfish bones reduced the lead concentration from 3122.30mg/kg to 2574.50mg/kg. Lead battery soil mixed with Tilapia bones reduced the lead concentration from 6718.15mg/kg to 1184.15mg/kg, while Lead metal soil mixed with both Catfish+Tilapia bones increased the lead concentration from 8807.65mg/kg to 11874.50mg/kg. For group two samples; Acid battery soil mixed with both Catfish+Tilapia bones reduced the lead concentration from 3706.75mg/kg to 3144.45mg/kg. Lead metal soil mixed with Catfish bone reduced the lead concentration from 15940.50mg/kg to 3903.90mg/kg, while Lead battery soil mixed with Tilapia bones increased the lead concentration from 6439.20mg/kg to 11671.50mg/kg. The study revealed that Catfish bones, at different weights can be used in the bioremediation of lead polluted soils and the reduction was higher, than using Tilapia or the combination of the fish bones.

Soils were extracted by hot water, dilute CaCl2, and by mannitol-CaCl2 solutions and boron was determined by either azomethine-H or the curcumin method. Results were strongly method dependent; in particular results by the simplest method, mannitol-CaCl2, were generally lower and not highly correlated (r = 0.64) with those by the recommended procedure. This procedure involves extraction with hot distilled H2O (2:1 solution:soil), centrifugation, filtration, color development with azomethine-H and correction for background color. Extractable boron values by this procedure ranged from 0.1 to 1.4 mg kg−1. Background color can be further reduced by the substitution of 0.02 M CaCl2 for distilled water. Nine bottled water brands collected from retail shops and food shops beside the University of Dhaka were analyzed for their major and trace element constituents to ascertain their suitability for human consumption. The results obtained were compared with parametric values (PVs) set by European Community Council Directive 98/83/EC and the guideline values (GVs) recommended by WHO. It was found that the majority of the brands tested were low in mineral contents. Moreover, lower values of hardness, TDS and conductivity than the prescribed limits of WHO showed that water was deficient in essential minerals. Minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium were present in some cases in such a low concentration that water seemed to be as good as distilled water. In case of heavy metals, only lead and cadmium were found to be below the detection limit (0.001 mg/L) which indicates bottled water brands are better for drinking. Background. In this study, the male fertility-enhancing activity of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg/day of Hunteria umbellata water seed extract (HU) in Wistar rats was studied for 60 days. In doing this, effect of repeated doses of HU was studied on the weight gain pattern, gonadosomatic index (GSI), serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone (TS), prolactin (PRL), and estradiol (ES)} as well as testicular antioxidant status of the treated rats as a way of elucidating the mechanism(s) of action of HU. Method. Thirty-six (36) male Wistar rats were randomly divided into six groups (I-VI) of six rats per group. Group I rats were gavaged with 10 ml/kg/day of distilled water and served as an untreated control; Group II rats were gavaged with 0.3 mg/kg/day of clomiphene in distilled water; Groups III-V rats received 100 mg/kg/day, 200 mg/kg/day, and 400 mg/kg/day of HU, respectively, and Group VI rats received 20 mg/kg/day of Vitamin C all in distilled water. All treatments were for 60 days after which the treated rats were humanely sacrificed. Sera of blood samples were processed for the above stated hormonal profile. Similarly, testicular tissues obtained were processed for semen analysis and complete antioxidant profile of the HU-treated testicles by assaying for superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione (GSH), glutathione reductase (GSR), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and Thiobarbituric Reactive Species (TBARS). Results. Prolonged treatments with 100 mg/kg/day, 200 mg/kg/day, and 400 mg/kg/day of HU for 60 days induced dose dependent reductions in weight gain pattern with the most significant (p<0.001) effect recorded with the highest dose of HU. Conversely, significant (p<0.001) increase was recorded for GSI at the same HU dose. Clomiphene and HU also induced significant (p<0.01, p<0.001) dose dependent increases in the total sperm count, %live sperm, but reverse effects on %dead sperm and %abnormal sperm. On the hormonal profile, oral treatment with 100 mg/kg/day, 200 mg/kg/day, and 400 mg/kg/day of the extract induced profound (p<0.05, p<0.01, and p<0.001) dose related increases in the sera TS, LH, and FSH while it caused reverse effect on serum PRL but caused no significant alterations in the serum ES levels. Similarly, oral treatment with vitamin C and 100-400 mg/kg/day of HU induced profound (p<0.05, p<0.01, and p<0.001) increases in the antioxidant enzyme activities. Conclusion. Overall, prolonged oral treatment with 100-400 mg/kg body weight of HU for 60 days significantly improved sperm function which was mediated via enhanced spermatogenesis, steroidogenesis, and antioxidant mechanisms.

Lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) are major environmental pollutants, and the accumulation of these elements in soils and plants is of great concern in agricultural production due to their toxic effects on crop growth. Also, these elements can enter into the food chain and severely affect human and animal health. Bioaugmentation with plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) can contribute to an environmentally friendly and effective remediation approach by improving plant survival and promoting element phytostabilization or extraction under such harsh conditions. We isolated and characterised Pb and Cd-tolerant root-associated bacteria from Helianthus petiolaris growing on a Pb/Cd polluted soil in order to compose inoculants that can promote plant growth and also ameliorate the phytostabilization or phytoextraction efficiency. One hundred and five trace element-tolerant rhizospheric and endophytic bacterial strains belonging to eight different genera were isolated from the aromatic plant species Helianthus petiolaris. Most of the strains showed multiple PGP-capabilities, ability to immobilise trace elements on their cell wall, and promotion of seed germination. Bacillus paramycoides ST9, Bacillus wiedmannii ST29, Bacillus proteolyticus ST89, Brevibacterium frigoritolerans ST30, Cellulosimicrobium cellulans ST54 and Methylobacterium sp. ST85 were selected to perform bioaugmentation assays in greenhouse microcosms. After 2 months, seedlings of sunflower (H. annuus) grown on polluted soil and inoculated with B. proteolyticus ST89 produced 40% more biomass compared to the non-inoculated control plants and accumulated 20 % less Pb and 40% less Cd in the aboveground plant parts. In contrast, B. paramycoides ST9 increased the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of Pb three times and of Cd six times without inhibiting plant growth. Our results indicate that, depending on the strain, bioaugmentation with specific beneficial bacteria can improve plant growth and either reduce trace element mobility or enhance plant trace element uptake.

Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) in Serum in Relation to Blood Lead Concentration and Alcohol Consumption in MenThe combined influence of age, smoking, alcohol, blood lead and cadmium concentrations, and serum copper, zinc, and selenium concentrations on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in serum was investigated in a group of 57 men aged 21 years to 40 years. The subjects had no occupational exposure to metals and no other known reasons suspected of influencing prostate function or metal metabolism. No significant correlation was found between PSA and any of the explanatory variables considered. Nevertheless, when taking into account all of the above-mentioned potentially explanatory variables, the results of stepwise multiple regression showed a significant increase in PSA with respect to an increase in blood lead, and a decrease in PSA with respect to an increase in intensity of alcohol consumption. The median and range values of blood lead concentration in the 57 men were 26.0 μg L-1 and (10.1 to 108.0) μg L-1, respectively. These results suggest that even a low-level environmental lead exposure, common for general populations worldwide, may contribute to the risk of prostate cancer in men. The influence of lead as well as cadmium, zinc, and selenium on prostate damage and PSA should be further investigated in relatively young men for the purpose of disease prevention.

Objective: Potash known as potassium carbonate (K2CO3) is a mixture of salt with other components, including impurities which coexist in mineral and salt is highly consumed in various forms by pregnant women. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of potash on the weight index of pregnant Wistar rats. Methods: A total of 25 albino Wistar rat with weights ranging from 180 to 300 g were used and allocated into five groups of five animals each (four females and one male) designated as Groups A, B, C, D, and E. The experimental Groups B, C, D, and E were administered through oral route different doses of potash of 300 mg/kg, 600 mg/kg, 900 mg/kg, and 1200 mg/kg, respectively, after pregnancy was detected by checking for mucus plug in the vagina. Group A served as the control group and was administered distilled water only. The animals were allowed for 1 week for acclimatization under normal temperature (270–300°C), which they were being fed with normal feed (grower’s mash) and water ad libitum for 1 week. Results: The result showed a significant (p˂0.05) reduction in weight with the highest level seen with the 1200 mg/kg group when compared to the control. Conclusion: Therefore, the effect of potash alters the physical activity and decreases weight, by implication may induce growth retardation of the Wistar rats which is not healthy for a pregnant animal.
