The mud crab business is being considered by most marketing operators to be a profitable and sustainable business due to the high demand in the international market. This study aims to determine value addition at different actors-based steps; primary data was collected from 100 respondents (40 collectors, 10 fatteners, 20 depot owners, 20 suppliers and 10 exporters) who were selected randomly from Khulna, Satkhira and Dhaka district. The mud crab analysis reveals that the value addition of the fatteners was the highest among all other intermediaries which was Tk. 11525 and Tk. 10665 per 100 kg of crab for the grade XXLPD in Khulna and Satkhira district respectively, whereas the lowest value addition was Tk. 1450 and Tk. 1090 per 100 kg of crab for grade KS3. The mentioned districts’ highest value addition by depot owners were Tk. 1191 and Tk. 1200 per 100 kg of crab for the grade FF1 respectively, while lowest value addition was Tk. 691 and Tk.750 per 100 kg of crab for the grade L and M, and by suppliers it was Tk. 2918 and 2758 per 100 kg of crab for the grade FF1. The range of value addition by exporters for Hong-Kong and Taiwan market was Tk. 260.25 to Tk. 13825 per 100 kg of crab. Value addition for exporting female crab to Taiwan market was greater than Hong-Kong market.

Abstract The mud crab (Scylla olivacea) is the brackish water resource with the most potential in Bangladesh after shrimp. It is widely distributed in coastal waters, including mangroves, tidal rivers and estuaries, and vast areas of traditional tide-fed shrimp ponds. The mud crab fishery is entirely capture-based and export-oriented with more than 50,000 persons involved in fishing, transportation, trading and export. The species is harvested from wild sources and black tiger shrimp ponds throughout coastal areas of Bangladesh using traditional craft and gear. Due to good price and high demand on the international market and absence of alternate income options for coastal communities, increased fishing intensity has already resulted in severe decline in natural stocks of mud crab over the last decade. Consequently, the catch per unit effort (CPUE) production and export earnings have also declined significantly over the past few years. To increase the natural stock of the resource, it is urgent to introduce both stock enhancement and aquaculture of mud crab in Bangladesh. Post harvest transportation and marketing also need to be improved to reduce high handling and transportation mortality (>30%) of harvested crabs.

A study was conducted to compare the survival, production and economics of mud crab fattening in cage with fattening in encircled earthen brackishwater pond. Thirty cages of 1m (L) × 1m (W) × 0.3m (H) partitioned into 16 compartments (each 25 × 25 × 30 cm) were set in a 40 m2 pond and another pond with same area was encircled with bamboo fence. Mud crab fattening in cage and in encircled earthen area were considered as Treatment-1 and Treatment-2, respectively with three replications each to compare the fattening system. Single adult non-gravid female crab (204.42 ± 2.58g) was stocked into each compartment of the cages and 80 crabs (204.42± 2.58g) were also stocked into earthen pond @ 2 indiv./ m2. The crabs were fed with chopped tilapia @ 8% of body weight twice daily. Survival rate of crab was found 93.75 ± 6.25% and 86.12 ± 2.16% respectively in cages and encircled earthen area. Significantly (P<0.05) higher total production of crab from cages (3.30±0.08 kg/m2) was recorded than the encircled earthen area (0.37±0.01 kg/m2). Comparative benefit-cost analysis showed that bamboo cage fattening attained higher net profit (Tk 91,630.00) than crab fattening in encircled earthen area (Tk 9,345.00) from 12 crops (12-16 days per crop) fattening period. The present study revealed that mud crab fattening using bamboo cage might be better than encircled earthen area with fencing in Bangladesh. Awareness of Mud Crab over exploitation in Mangkang Wetan Waters has been noticed. One of the reference information is the growth study to determine the condition of the mud crab population. High demand encourages the fisherman to catch more, which leads to overexploitation in nature. The study aimed to estimate the growth, mortality, and exploitation rate of mud crabs. The 921 mud crabs samples were collected from Mangkang Wetan Waters from October 2018 to January 2019. The method used was the survey method. The crabs were taken once a week for 4 months. The width and weight of crab carapace were measured. The growth rate of S. serrata was 0.93/year (male) and 0.69/year (female). The natural mortality rate of S. serrata was 1.08/year (male) and 0.89/year (female), the mortality of catch (F) was 0.55/year (male) and 1.09/year (female). The rate of exploitation of male S. serrata reached 34%, and the rate of exploitation of female S. serrata was 55%. The exploitation of female S. serrata shows that overexploitation has occurred because the optimum value of exploitation (E-OPTIMUM) is equivalent to E=50%.

One of the information needed for formulating the sustainable management of mud crab is the availability of information on the population parameters and its exploitation rate. The current research aimed to study the population parameters and the exploitation rate of mud crab in Sebatik Waters. Field research was conducted in March – December 2017. Samples of mud crab were obtained from the catch of fisherman by trap in Sebatik Waters. The Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were constructed through monthly modals progression analysis of the size of carapace width frequencies distributions and the exploitation rate was estimated through the method of length converted catch curve. The results showed that the carapace width of mud crabs caught by trap in Sebatik Waters ranged between 84 to 144 mmCW with the mean size of 107.05±12.3 mmCW for male and 110.2±8.86 mmCW for female. The growth of weights of male crab (b=3.6) is faster than its size, while the growth of weight of female crab was slower than its size (b=2,5). The sex ratio of mud crab was unbalanced (5.5 : 1) that the proportion of male was more dominant than female. Asymptotic carapace width (CW) of mud crab was 151.2 mmCW for male and 140.5 mmCW for female. The growth rate (K) of mud crab was 0.75 year-1 for male and 0.79 year-1 for female. The exploitation status of mud crab was starting to overfishing (E=0,5-0,55) so it suggest to not increase the fishing effort of mud crab fishery  in Sebatik Waters.

Crab meat is widely consumed in several countries around the world. However, when consumed, crab meats are frequent cause of allergic reactions throughout the world. Scylla serrata is among the most common mud crab in Malaysia. In a previous study two major allergens of mud crab at 36 and 41 kDa was identified. Thus, the aim of this study is to further identify these major allergens by a proteomic approach. Protein extract was prepared and resolved by 2-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE). Immunoblotting was then performed using reactive sera from patients with crab allergy. Major allergenic spots were then excised from the 2-DE gel and analysed by mass spectrometry. The 2-DE profile of the extract revealed approximately >100 protein spots between pH of 4.00 to 8.00. Mass spectrometry analysis has identified the 36 and 41 kDa proteins as tropomyosin and arginine kinase, respectively. Our findings indicated that tropomyosin and arginine kinase play a major role in allergic reaction to mud crab meat among local patients with crab meat allergy, and should be included in diagnostics and therapeutic strategies of this allergy.
