The purpose of this integrative review was to synthesize evidence concerning the relationship between comorbid obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia (OSA+I), and depressive symptoms. OSA and insomnia are common sleep disorders, recently comorbid OSA+I has been recognized as prevalent in adults. Although each sleep disorder increases the risk and severity of depressive symptoms, the effect of comorbid OSA+I on depressive symptoms remains unclear. A systematic search of PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO identified 15 data-based studies. All the studies were observational with either a cross-sectional (n = 14) or a case-control design (n = 1). Study quality was assessed. Most of the studies (n = 14) indicated that comorbid OSA+I had an additive role on depressive symptoms. Insomnia appeared to have a more important role than OSA in increasing the severity of depressive symptoms in persons with comorbid OSA+I.

Abstract Objective This meta-analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between serum level of IL-8 and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Methods Electronic databases were retrieved according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, relevant studies exploring the relationship between serum level of IL-8 and OSAS were enrolled. Statistical analysis was performed using STATA 12.0. Results Totally 199 studies were retrieved, among which 10 were qualified for the inclusion criteria and were finally included in the meta-analysis with 367 cases of OSAS patients and 335 control cases. Serum level of IL-8 was higher in patients than healthy controls (Standard mean difference (SMD) = 2.16, 95% CI = 1.17–3.15, P < 0.001). The subgroup analysis based on ethnicity revealed that average serum level of IL-8 were higher in Asian and Caucasian OSAS patients than healthy controls (Asian: SMD = 2.50, 95% CI = 1.13–3.87, P < 0.001; Caucasian: SMD = 1.59, 95% CI = 0.11–3.06, P = 0.035). Further subgroup analysis based on age indicated a statistical difference in serum level of IL-8 between adult OSAS patients and healthy counterparts (SMD = 2.73, 95% CI = 1.49–3.98, P < 0.001). Conclusion The level of IL-8 was related to OSAS in adult patients, and increased serum IL-8 level may increase the risk of OSAS.

Background: Previous studies revealed that the prothrombotic factors in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) remain controversial. Aim/Objective: The aim of the systematic review is to elucidate the relationship between prothrombotic factors and OSA. Materials and Methods: This systematic review was performed under the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. The literature we investigated was extracted from 4 main medical databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Chinese databases) as of February 2020. We used significant weighted mean differences (SMDs) with 95% CIs from random-effects model. Results: A total of 15 studies comprising 2190 patients were available for the meta-analysis. The pooled results showed that the levels of fibrinogen (SMD = 0.95, 95% CI = 0.26 to 1.65, P = .000), vascular endothelial growth factor (SMD = 0.37, 95% CI = −0.90 to 1.63, P = .000), and plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (SMD = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.29 to 0.92, P = .040) increased in patients with OSA. There were no statistical differences between groups in terms of d-dimer ( P = .108) and platelet counts ( P = .233). Subgroup analyses demonstrated that specimen types and age could account for the heterogeneity. Conclusions and Significance: This meta-analysis indicated the relationship between prothrombotic factors in OSA hypopnea. Obstructive sleep apnea–related effects may underline the importance of considering the dysfunction of the hemostatic system. The prothrombotic factors in OSA can influence making a choice of appropriate therapy.

Controversial findings are reported about the relationship between floppy eyelid syndrome (FES) and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The main goal of this study was to evaluate whether FES is more prevalent in OSAS patients by performing a meta-analysis. A comprehensive literature search of Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane databases was performed. Only studies related to the prevalence of FES in OSAS were included in the meta-analysis. We estimated a pooled odds ratio (OR) for the prevalence of FES in OSAS. In total, 6 studies with 767 participants met the inclusion criteria. Using a fixed-effects model, the pooled OR was 4.12. The test for the overall effect revealed that FES was statistically prevalent in OSAS patients when compared with that in non-OSAS subjects (Z=4.98,p<0.00001). In the subgroup analysis by OSAS severity, the incidence of FES in OSAS increased with severity of OSAS as indicated with increased OR values (OR = 2.56, 4.62, and 7.64 for mild, moderate, and severe OSAS). In conclusion, the results indicate that FES is more prevalent in OSAS patients. However, this result was based only on unadjusted estimates. Prospective cohort studies are needed to determine whether OSAS is an independent risk factor for FES.
