This analysis discusses implementing innovative technological support systems (ambient active assisted living technologies) in accordance with the German Social Code in the context of preventive home visits for very old people as a result of the problem of no-care zones after a stay in hospital. It discusses the logic of such a Dionysian, transgressive change of social reality, motivated, empowered and enabled by ideas, empathy, imagination and courage, from the critical perspective of its necessary cultural grammar and psychodynamic preconditions. The analysis is founded on metaphysics as the dynamic ontology of personalism. It is therefore guided by the inclusive idea of social capital in the context of caring community building and is shaped by the value-oriented ethics of the anthropology of relative autonomy and the right of the elderly to participate in the local community.

AbstractRehabilitation robots are becoming an important means of assisted living for the elderly, and the appearance of rehabilitation robots directly affects the willingness of the elderly to interact with the robots. Much of the current research on robot appearance preferences relies solely on subjective evaluations, which are relatively cheap, but do not reach deep into the brain to get an accurate grasp of how humans respond to robot appearance. Using electroencephalogram signal and questionnaire survey, we studied the preference of the elderly for abstract and figurative robots. The experimental materials are derived from the pictures of 10 robots in the market. The electroencephalogram signal are collected by BrainVision Recorder and processed by BrainVision Analyzer, as well as SPSS statistical analysis. Experiment shows that the peak of figurative robot pictures is higher and the fluctuation is more intense from 350 ms to 600 ms in the central region and the right half of parietal region. While the peak of abstract robot pictures is higher and the fluctuation is more intense in the prefrontal region, and the difference between abstract robot and figurative robot is not obvious in the occipital region. Based on the electroencephalogram signal and experimental results, it provides the possibility for objective preference evaluation of the elderly to the robot designed features.

Abstract Objective: Discuss how Brazilian public policies aimed at old people address the right of the old people to decent work, and the promotion of their insertion and maintenance at work. Method: Bibliographic research was carried out to analyze the Brazilian public policies aimed at old people. In order to deepen the analysis of these policies, they were consulted in full on Brazilian government websites. The data was analyzed based on content analysis. Results: Among the public policies aimed at the old people those having some type of work-related disposition provision are: the National Policy for Old People, State Policy for Old People, Statute of the Elderly, and National Health Policy for Old People. The work-related propositions were categorized into: I. Creation of working conditions for old people; II. Preventing discrimination and encouraging the hiring of old people; III. Continuing education for old people; IV. Retirement; V. Work as a choice. Conclusion: Over time, Brazilian public policies aimed at old people have been improving the approach to decent work, and the promotion of the insertion and maintenance of old people in their work. However, there is still a lack of better advances and clarifications about the guidelines and recommendations related to work for old people, emphasizing the importance of work contexts considering the conditions and organizations impacting the possibility of insertion and maintenance of old people at work.

In Sweden, congregate housing units for elderly people are in a dynamic transition. Reforms emphasise the right of continued integrity and respect when an older person needs service and support in their daily life. With older people's experiences of living in a congregate housing unit, important qualities of the physical environment and of practices and ideology of nursing were examined. Using a random selection from 30 congregate housing units, 59 residents were asked to participate in a semi-structured interview. The interviews were taped and analysed qualitatively. The results showed that residents regarded security and a flat of their own as unconditionally the most important features of a congregate housing unit. Security was provided by health professionals, nurses and nurses' assistants. An important aspect of the outdoor environment expressed by the elderly residents was to have access to a green spot and benches to rest on.

The rapid diffusion of the Internet has considerable potential for enhancing the way people connect with each other, the root of social capital. However, the more the Internet is used for building social capital the greater will the impact be on those whose access and/or usage is curtailed. It is therefore important to investigate the impacts of Internet on groups at risk of digital and social exclusion. The aim of this article is to examine how the use of the Internet influences social capital and community building in a disadvantaged area. Quantitative and qualitative data from a case study in a suburban area of Stockholm are used to evaluate the social impacts of two community-based Internet projects: a Local Net and an IT-Café. Each of the projects was aimed at enhancing digital inclusion and social capital in a disadvantaged local community. The paper examines the extent to which use of the Internet is associated with an enhancement of social participation, social trust and local identity in the area. The Local Net appears to have had limited success in meeting its goals; the IT-Café was more successful. Visitors to the IT-Café had more local friends, expressed less social distrust, perceived less tension between different groups in the area and felt a much stronger sense of local identity than non-visitors. Visitors praised the IT-Café as providing a meeting-place both online and offline. The Internet was used for networking, exchange of support and information seeking. Although it is difficult to establish causal priorities, the evidence suggests that an IT-Café, combining physical with virtual and the local with the global, may be especially well suited to build social capital and a sense of local community in a disadvantaged area. The importance of social, rather than solely technological, factors in determining the impact of the Internet on social capital and community in marginal areas is stressed.

The Serbian population (exclusive of Kosovo and Metohia region) is among the oldest populations in the world. More than 950,000 individuals in the Central Serbia and about 300,000 individuals in Vojvodina, or one sixth of both populations are 65 plus. The findings of representative surveys carried out recently pointed out that poverty and poor institutional and instrumental support are the main issues of the elderly population in Serbia. The poverty rate among the elderly is high (9.6 percent) and significantly higher than average (6.6). In the meantime, the coverage of poor elderly in Serbia with material provisioning of the family (MPF), the most important measure of the state's social policy, is low due to lack of information of potential beneficiaries, difficulties in collecting all necessary documents as well as strict criteria in connection to means and income tests necessary for exercising the right on this social benefit. Not only that the MPF coverage of poor elderly is inadequate, the amount of this social benefit is also very low. Parallel interviews with 826 elderly persons of 70 and over demonstrate that, although four out of five elderly are chronic patients, the majority of respondents evaluates that they are capable of living in their own households. However, a substantial number of the elderly, every fourth, needs some kind of assistance services with a view to daily functioning at home or in local community. Respondents mainly rely on family in resolving daily problems. A family provides greatest help and support regardless of the fact that such elderly person lives alone or not. Significant factors of support to elderly are friends and neighbors of such persons. Institutions have only a marginal role in the elderly support network. .

Sustainability in forest and society despite “overmaturity” and “lack of regeneration” (essay) This essay compares efforts to move towards sustainability in the forests with those in the care for the elderly in Switzerland, and tries to draw conclusions which may promote sustainability. It is wrong, for forests and human populations, to talk of “overmaturity”, as this assumes the primacy of economic reasoning. To guarantee sustainability, the balance between all aspects is crucial. To attain true sustainability, we need binding guidelines and the “right” scale of implementation programme. Civil society organisations have been working for decades – often longer than the state itself – to improve sustainability. In many different areas, good cooperation and effective distribution of tasks between these institutions can be observed. This is important, among other things, because the ever greater speed of technical progress may overwhelm the adaptive capacity of both forests and people, which would influence sustainability in a negative way.

Introduction: The monitoring of the curarisation is a unique opportunity to investigate the function of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) during cancer surgery, especially in frailty-induced and age-related sarcopenia. Method: We conducted a comprehensive literature review in PubMed, without any limit of time related to frailty, sarcopenia, age and response to neuromuscular blockers in the context of cancer surgery. Results: Several modifications appear with age: changes in cardiac output, a decrease in muscle mass and increase in body fat, the deterioration in renal and hepatic function, the plasma clearance and the volume of distribution in elderly are smaller. These changes can be exacerbated in cancer patients. We also find modifications of the NMJ: dysfunctional mitochondria, modifications in the innervation of muscle fibers and motor units, uncoupling of the excitation-contraction of muscle fibers, inflammation. : Neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) compete with acetylcholine and prevent it from fixing itself on its receptor. Many publications reported guidelines for using NMBAs in the elderly, based on studies comparing old people with young people. : No one screened frailty before, and thus, no studies compared frail elderly and non-frail elderly undergoing cancer surgery. Conclusion: Despite many studies about curarisation in the specific populations, and many arguments for a potential interest for investigation, no studies investigated specifically the response to NMBAs in regard of the frailty-induced and age-related sarcopenia.
