The paper presents an approach to determine the global load effects induced on shif structures by abnormal, freak, or episodic waves. It refers to the present procedure of determining extreme values of wave-induced responses, including the recent advances of adopting time series of wave elevation as reference design conditions t calculate the wave-induced structural loads on ships in heavy weather. It is show how this procedure can be extended to account for abnormal or episodic waves Reference is made to what is presently known about abnormal or freak waves showing that although it is possible to determine the loads induced by these wave in floating and fixed structures, the present knowledge about the probability of occurrence of these waves is not enough to allow a wave design criterion to be defined in a way consistent with the present probabilistic approaches. However, it is suggested that at the present stage of knowledge it is possible to determine the load induced by abnormal waves similar to ones that have been measured at various ocean locations and that are thus realistic; a method is described to perform such calculations. Although this information cannot replace the wave-induced loads calculated with the presently established procedures, it can serve as guidance for th design. An application example is presented of a containership subjected to a wav trace that includes an episodic wave that was measured during a severe storm in Central North Sea. The measured wave time history is modified in order to investigate the influence of the wave steepness on the induced vertical motions and loads. Th loads induced by the abnormal wave are compared for the first time with extreme values from long-term distributions.

This paper is concerned with estimating the response value corresponding to a long return period, say 20 years. Time domain simulation is required to obtain the nonlinear response, and long time series are required to limit the statistical uncertainty in the simulations. It is crucial to introduce ways to improve the efficiency in the calculation. A method to determine the long-term extremes by considering only a few short-term sea states is applied. Long-term extreme values are estimated using a set of sea states that have a certain probability of occurrence, known as the contour line approach. Effect of whipping is included by assuming that the whipping and wave-induced responses are independent, but the effect of correlation of the long-term extreme value is also studied. Numerical calculations are performed using a nonlinear, hydroelastic strip theory as suggested by Xia et al (1998). Results are presented for the S-175 containership (ITTC 1983) in head sea waves. The analysis shows that whipping increases the vertical bending moment and that the correlation is significant.

A method of long-term formulation of the nonlinear wave-induced vertical load effects on ships was applied to three tanker hulls of different sizes. For large tanker hulls, the nonlinear effect is not significant, and thus linear theories can continue to be used for earlier studies on these kind of ships, contrary to what was shown earlier for containership hulls. However, for smaller tankers, significant nonlinear values were obtained, with both sagging and hogging nonlinear results being larger than the linear ones.

Relationship between extreme values in long-term distribution and the short-term values under each sea-state in which ships may encounter through their lifetime is discussed regarding wave-induced loads such as ship motions, hull girder moments and hydrodynamic pressures. Based on the discussion, a simplified formula of the wave-induced loads equivalent to the extreme value in the long-term distribution at the exceedance probability of 10−8 is proposed together with the corresponding sea-states by a series of direct load analyses of the tankers and bulk carriers. Furthermore, nonlinear characteristics with respect to waveheight on wave-induced loads are discussed based on the comprehensive experiment results of a blunt ship model in regular/irregular extreme waves. Finally, a correction method of the observed nonlinear phenomenon is proposed.

Based on the daily sunspot number (SN) data (1954–2011) from the Purple Mountain Observatory, the extreme value theory (EVT) is employed for the research of the long-term solar activity. It is the first time that the EVT is applied on the Chinese SN. Two methods are used for the research of the extreme events with EVT. One method is the block maxima (BM) approach, which picks the maximum SN value of each block. Another one is the peaks-over-threshold (POT) approach. After a declustering process, a threshold value (here it is 300) is set to pick the extreme values. The negative shape parameters are obtained by the two methods, respectively, indicating that there is an upper bound for the extreme SN value. Only one value of the N-year return level (RL) is estimated: N = 19 years. For N = 19 years, the RL values of SN obtained by two methods are similar with each other. The RL values are found to be 420 for the POT method and the BM method. Here, the trend of 25th solar cycle is predicted to be stronger, indicating that the length of meridional forms of atmospheric circulation will be increased.

This long term study demonstrates for the first time that it is possible to propagate embryogenic Vigna trilobata and to subsequently initiate the differentiation of embryos into complete plantlets. Initiation of callus was possible on 2,4-D. Somatic embryos differentiated on modified MS basal nutrient medium with 1.0 mg/l  of 2,4-D and 0.5 mg/l  of Kn. Sustained cell division resulted in globular and heart shape stages of somatic embryos. Transfer of embryos on to a fresh modified MS basal medium with 0.5 mg/l of Kn and 0.5 mg/l of GA3 helped them to attain maturation and germination. However, the propagation of cells, as well as the differentiation of embryos, were inhibited by a continuous application of these growth regulators. For this reason, a long period on medium lacking these growth regulators was necessary before the differentiation of embryos occurred again. The study was targeted at developing a methodology for constructing a macroeconomic performance index at a provincial level for the first time in Vietnam based on 4 groups of measurements: (i) Economic indicators; (ii) oriented economic indicators; (iii) socio-economic indicators; and (iv) economic - social – institutional indicators. Applying the methodology to the 2011 - 2015 empirical data of all provinces in Vietnam, the research shows that the socio-economic development strategy implemented by those provinces did not provide balanced outcomes between growth and social objectives, sustainability and inclusiveness. Many provinces focused on economic growth at the cost of structural change, equality and institutional transformation. In contrast, many provinces were successful in improving equality but not growth. Those facts threaten the long-term development objectives of the provinces.

The main goal of the scientific institution was and remains to improve the assortment of fruit and berry crops for the development of domestic horticulture. Black currant breeding at VNIISPK was started by A.F Tamarova and continued by the doctor of agricultural Sciences T.P.Ogoltsova and doctor of agricultural Sciences S.D. Knyazev. A long-term breeding program has been developed. The main goals of the program are to create black currant cultivars with continuous resistance to diseases, first of all powdery mildew, as wells resistance to pests, i.e. bud mite. As a result of the long-term work, over 40 black currant cultivars have been developed, 14 of them are zoned. Red currant breeding was led by the candidate of agricultural Sciences L.V. Bayanova; since 2001 the work has been continued by the candidate of agricultural Sciences O.D. Golyaeva. ‘Heinemanns Rote Spӓtlese’, the descendant of R. multiflorum Kit., was involved in the red currant breeding for the first time in Russia. On its genetic basis, a series of late maturing cultivars with long and dense racemes was created. At the Institute, in total 21cultivars of red currants have been developed, 13 of them are zoned. At present, red currant cultivars make up 25.5% of the zoned assortment in Russia. The first research on gooseberries was stated by V.P. Semakin and A.F Tamarova; since 1992 the systematic gooseberry breeding has been carried out by the candidate of agricultural Sciences O.V. Kurashev. On the basis of Grossularia robusta, we have created gooseberry forms that are resistant to powdery mildew and leaf spots. These forms are highly productive, weakly thorned, having bush habit suitable for mechanized harvest. The result of breeding activities was the transfer of 6 gooseberry cultivars to State agricultural testing: ‘Solnechny Zaychik’, ‘Nekrasovsky’, ‘Yupiter’, ‘Zemlianichny’, ‘Moryachok’ and ‘Discovery’.
