Erythrocytes transport oxygen to tissues and exercise-induced oxidative stress increases erythrocyte damage and turnover. Increased use of antioxidant supplements may alter protective erythrocyte antioxidant mechanisms during training. Aim of study: To examine the effects of antioxidant supplementation (α-lipoic acid and α-tocopherol) and/or endurance training on the antioxidant defenses of erythrocytes. Methods: Young male Wistar rats were assigned to (1) sedentary; (2) sedentary and antioxidant-supplemented; (3) endurance-trained; or (4) endurance-trained and antioxidant-supplemented groups for 14 weeks. Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and catalase (CAT) activities, and plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) were then measured. Results: Antioxidant supplementation had no significant effect (p > 0.05) on activities of antioxidant enzymes in sedentary animals. Similarly, endurance training alone also had no effect (p > 0.05). GPX (125.9 ± 2.8 vs. 121.5 ± 3.0 U.gHb–1, p < 0.05) and CAT (6.1 ± 0.2 vs. 5.6 ± 0.2 U.mgHb–1, p < 0.05) activities were increased in supplemented trained animals compared to non-supplemented sedentary animals whereas SOD (61.8 ± 4.3 vs. 52.0 ± 5.2 U.mgHb–1, p < 0.05) activity was decreased. Plasma MDA was not different among groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions: In a rat model, the combination of exercise training and antioxidant supplementation increased antioxidant enzyme activities (GPX, CAT) compared with each individual intervention.

Soybean yields are often indicated as an interesting case of climate change mitigation due to the beneficial effects of CO2 fertilization. In this paper we econometrically study this effect using a time series model of yields in a multivariate framework for a main producer and exporter of this commodity, Argentina. We have to deal with the upward behavior of soybean yields trying to identify which variables are the long-run determinants responsible of its observed trend. With this aim we adopt a partial system approach to estimate subsets of long-run relationships due to climate, technological and economic factors. Using an automatic selection algorithm we evaluate encompassing of the different obtained equilibrium correction models. We found that only technological innovations due to new crop practices and the use of modified seeds explain soybean yield in the long run. Regarding short run determinants we found positive effects associated with the use of standard fertilizers and also from changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration which would suggest a mitigation effect from global warming. However, we also found negative climate effects from periods of droughts associated with La Ni&ntilde;a episodes, high temperatures and extreme rainfall events during the growing season of the plant.

The chapter Rhythm and Conduction Disturbances in Stress Testing reviews the frequency and significance of arrhythmias and conduction abnormalities precipitated by exercise. Case examples are provided. PVCs occurring prior to, during exercise, or during recovery all modestly increase the risk of all-cause mortality in patients with and without known coronary artery disease (CAD). Ventricular tachycardia and premature ventricular complexes are often not reproducible on a subsequent exercise test. Exercise induced left bundle branch block (LBBB) predicts increased risk of the presence of CAD, all cause mortality, and often permanent LBBB. Differentiating wide complex tachycardia during exercise testing between supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia can be challenging. The Wellens, Brugada, and Vereckei algorithms to distinguish between these arrhythmias are detailed and compared.

AbstractCatecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia is a rare (prevalence: 1/10,000) channelopathy characterised by exercise-induced or emotion-triggered ventricular arrhythmias. There is an overall paucity of genotype-phenotype correlation studies in patients with catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, and in vitro and in vivo effects of individual mutations have not been well characterised. We report an 8-year-old child who carried a mutation in the coding exon 8 of RYR2 (p.R169L) and presented with emotion-triggered sudden cardiac death. He was also found to have left ventricular hypertrophy, a combination which has not been reported before. We discuss the association between genetic variation in RYR2, particularly mutations causing replacement of arginine at position 169 of RYR2 and structural cardiac abnormalities.
