This paper discusses creating children picture-book stories which highlight the issue of self-esteem in children, particularly exploring the causes of low self-esteem in children as well as what children get after regaining their self-esteem. Serving as the theoretical framework are Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Development, the concept of Praise Paradox, Body Image, and Colorism. In the first and second story, the main characters have low self-esteem because they feel unappreciated, and they later feel more loved and happier after overcoming their issues. In the third story, the main character has low self-esteem because she keeps receiving the wrong type of praise but later becomes calmer after overcoming her issue. The main characters in the fourth and fifth story have low self-esteem because of their appearances, but they will later be more confident and secure after overcoming their issues. Keywords: Children Picture-Books, Self-Esteem, Psychosocial Development, Praise Paradox, Body Image, Colorism

This paper elaborates the project of creating picture-book stories for two to five years old of Indonesian children, which highlight the issue of identity development in children. Erik Erikson’s eight stages of psychosocial development will be the theoretical framework of this paper. In the first and second story, the main characters pass through the crisis of autonomy versus shame and doubt. They have strict and overprotective parents that caused them to doubt themselves. However, by believing in themselves and taking an action, they passed the crisis and developed a balanced identity. In the third, fourth, and fifth story, the main characters pass through the crisis of initiative versus guilt. They learn to be honest, to forgive, and to let go. Each action has its own risk, but by taking the initiative to do the right thing, they passed the crisis successfully and formed a balanced identity. Keywords: children picture-books, children development, psychosocial development, autonomy vs shame and doubt, initiative vs guilt, balanced identity

In the last 15 to 20 years a lot of celebrities have published novels and or picture books for children and adolescents. This article will contextualise this international phenomenon within a theoretical framework of celebrity studies and research on life writing and intermediality. As will be shown, these literary texts for young people by celebrities represent an intermedial life writing that combines texts, illustrations, photographs and forms of online and offline self-curating as well. It is especially the picture book that seems to carry an archival function with respect to the authors’ lives. Here, the celebrities tell about themselves in words and images, they stage themselves as private and authentic persons. Understanding children’s and adolescents’ literature as part of intergenerational communication, these literary texts show different kinds of strategies to prolong the knowledge of a public person in societies’ collective memories.

Studies have shown that life drawing can have positive effects on body image in adults. Here, we examined the effect of life drawing in a sample of British adolescents ( N = 14). Participants completed measures of positive body image, appearance investment, and self-esteem before attending three life drawing sessions over 7 weeks. Following the final session, they completed the same quantitative measures and answered open-ended questions about their experiences. Analyses of quantitative data showed that participants had significantly higher positive body image and lower dysfunctional appearance investment following the final session. However, responses to the open-ended questions suggested that most participants did not believe the sessions had impacted their body image. The latter data also suggested that participants felt discomfort with adult nudity, although most also indicated that the sessions had changed their perceptions of others. Based on our results, we make a number of recommendations for practitioners.

Interest in reading Indonesian people, especially the level of MI/SD children is still relatively low because they prefer playing online games, watching television etc. This factor causes their ability to read is still lacking. In addition, there are reading books (both storybooks and textbooks) in school institutions that are still monotonous with colourless pictures so that children are easily bored and are not interested in reading them. Based on the above phenomenon, the reading interest of MI/SD children must be increased by the teacher because "books are a repository of knowledge and reading can open the horizons of the world". The use of learning media to foster children's interest in reading is with a picture book series. This series of picture books is more developed if the teacher dares to be creative by making colourful pictures equipped with simple sentences that can interest children to read them. This series picture book is effectively used in learning elementary school children because it contains games and also education. In the picture book series, there are several learning activities including observing, telling, reading and sorting pictures so that it becomes a complete story. Furthermore, teachers can add/collaborate on strategies or methods that can support the use of series picture books to be more innovative in each lesson.
