Introduction: Corneal blindness, though treatable, contributes largely to the burden of blindness. With 1.2 million existing cases of corneal blindness in India, the demand for cornea collection is increasing. 69349 corneas were collected in 2018-19 but it is much less than what is needed. Faulty perceptions and unwillingness are two major hurdles against a scenario favourable towards eye donation. The objectives of the study was to assess the perception and willingness towards eye donation and the socio-demographic variables that affect such perception and willingness, in an urban community of West Bengal. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study conducted among adult residents of the urban field practice area of Medical College Kolkata, data was collected from randomly selected eligible members, one each from all the available families by interviewing them using a validated pre tested schedule. Results: Eighty nine (52.3%) among 170 interviewed participants had Secondary level education or higher, 49.4% had outdoor engagement. 128 participants reported ocular morbidity in the family but only 126 had heard about eye donation. 98 (77.8%) of these 126, had favourable perception towards eye donation. Among these 98 participants, 40 were willing to pledge for eye donation. Higher education and outdoor engagement significantly predicted favourable perception, while willingness significantly increased with participants belonging to higher socio-economic class and with higher education. Conclusions: Compared to favourable perception, willingness of pledging eyes was lesser due to various false notions. Proper education through usage of means of mass communication and stress upon school education is needed to address these hurdles.

The primary goal of this research is to examine and compare the overall quality of higher education institutions' results. In terms of research methodology, it falls under the category of descriptive comparative status studies. In the state of West Bengal, 218 colleges affiliated with seven universities were purposefully chosen as samples. The data is analysed using qualitative statistical methods such as percentages and graphical representations. It was discovered that 43.26 percent of colleges received a B score. It's also worth noting that 1.08 percent and 3.57 percent of colleges affiliated with Calcutta University and Vidyasagar University, respectively, have earned A++ and A+ accreditation. On the one hand, colleges affiliated with four universities (Burdwan University, North Bengal University, West Bengal State University, and Kalyani University) have received A, B++, B+, B to C grades, while colleges affiliated with two universities (Calcutta University and Vidyasagar University) have received A++, A+, A, B++, B+, B to C grades. As a result of the results, it is possible to infer that many colleges' success levels in terms of quality are not up to par.

Listening is the key to all effective communication. Good listening ability helps a person to make ideas, processing information, making pertinent comments, and ask relevant questions. This study aimed to understand existing listening skills among the socially disadvantaged students based on different demographic indicators and check whether listening skill and academic performance are somehow related when both the category of students are considered in higher education in West Bengal. Undergraduate freshman students of college and universities at West Bengal consisted of the population for the study where 225 students who regularly attended the course after successful completion of the higher secondary level selected as sample. Major findings revealed that the gender, stream, and medium of instruction has a significant contribution in a variation of listening skill (p<0.05); also, listening skill and academic performance is positively correlated with high statistical significance (p<0.01).

West Bengal, in 1951, was ranked second in the country, with a literacy level of 24.0 per cent, though far behind Kerala with a literacy level of 47.18 per cent. From the very beginning there was an elitist bias in educational planning, so that primary education was badly neglected, and so subsequently West Bengal began to slide in relation to states like Kerala, Maharashtra, Mizoram or Goa. Unfortunately, the elitist bias also persisted during the Left Front rule. As a result, by the time of Census 2011, the literacy level of West Bengal had slid down so far that it was barely above the national average. At the same time, the small state of Tripura, also ruled by a Left Front government, coming up from far behind had caught up with and then had overtaken West Bengal, and was only a little behind Kerala, the most literate state in India. Although this article is supposed to be an account of the state of education in West Bengal since independence it concentrates essentially on the primary school sector, because that is the foundation of all further education. It refers to the Bhabatosh Datta Commission on higher education whose recommendations still remain valid and unfortunately unimplemented.

This article explores the link between modes of funding, governance and performance in higher education with the help of a case study involving three engineering colleges in West Bengal, India. It examines the major factors driving performances in the selected higher education institutions. It explains how the ability to adopt and implement performative policies depends on the objective functions, mode of funding and the reputation of the institutions. The findings suggest that the obsession with performance and its linkage with funding may not necessarily lead to a sustained and inclusive improvement in quality in the higher education sector. On the other hand, institutions driven by an objective of maximising prestige may ensure quality without any performative governance policies in place. The findings are contextualised in the larger debate about implementing neo-liberal policies for the improvement of quality in the higher education sector at the national and global level.
