A detachable spudcan enables the operation of a jackup barge on any seabed. A general detachable spudcan uses a pin to connect the separate footing and leg. However, this type of structure can cause excessive stress on the pin. In this study, a new type of detachable spudcan reinforced with ring plates (upper and lower) is proposed to improve the structural performance of the conventional detachable spudcan. Finite element analysis revealed that the stress concentration in the connection part was relieved by reinforcing the lower and upper rings. In particular, reinforcing both lower and upper rings resulted in superior structural performance under eccentric supported conditions than when reinforcing only the lower ring. The structural strength of the spudcan when both the upper and lower rings were reinforced was found to be 120% of the spudcan as compared to when only the lower ring was reinforced. It is thought that the safety of the connection part can be secured when designing a detachable spudcan using the reinforcement plan verified in this study.

The composite steel–concrete rigid frame bridge is composed of steel or composite girders connecting rigidly to RC piers, and has advantages of lower maintenance costs, faster construction, and higher resistance and ductility during an earthquake. In this paper, a new type of steel–concrete composite rigid connection is developed and studied by finite element analysis. The comparison with other types of connections shows that this new type of connection has a good structural performance from the confining of concrete by steel and preventing the buckling of steel by concrete.

Stress shielding, which occurred always around traditional one part implant applied for prosthetic artificial lower limb attachment, would cause osteoporosis and thus result in the loose and extrusion, and then the malfunction of the implant. To improve the structure of the implant, a new type of implant—multi-part implant was developed in this article. Based on CT data and under the maximal load during a normal walking cycle, 3D finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out to analyze the stress of bone around the new implant in three cases of distally truncated femur at high position、middle-position and low-position. Results reveal that stress shielding and stress concentration under the new type of implant reduced effectively compared with the traditional one-part implant, and the stress distribution is much close to the natural bone. Application for distally truncated femur at middle-position and low-position was much better, while stress concentration was marked at high-position. Meanwhile, the stability in vivo can also be maintained with the multi-part implant. The new implant is promising applied for prosthetic limb.

According to the situation that the dual-friction drums on the new type towing machine lack stress analysis when designed, the safety is difficult to test and verify. The pull of wire rope in various positions was derived and calculated, so both compressive stress and tangent friction force generated by the pull of wire rope were calculated. The result made by ANSYS software demonstrates the safety of the left drum which suffers from larger loads, structure improvement measures are put forward for the drum.

According to the results of finite element analysis (FEA), when the diameter of opening of the flat cover is no more than 0.5D (d≤0.5D), there is obvious stress concentration at the edge of opening, but only existed within the region of 2d. Increasing the thickness of flat covers could not relieve the stress concentration at the edge of opening. It is recommended that reinforcing element being installed within the region of 2d should be used. When the diameter of openings is larger than 0.5D (d>0.5D), conical or round angle transitions could be employed at connecting location, with which the edge stress decreased remarkably. However, the primary stress plus the secondary stress would be valued by 3[σ].

The purpose of this paper is to develop an estimation formula of stress concentration factors of butt-welded components under tensile loading. To investigate the influence of weld bead profiles on stress concentration factors of double V groove butt-welded joints, butt-welded specimens were made by CO2 gas metal arc welding. And the three main parameters, the toe radius, flank angle and bead height were measured by a profile measuring equipment. By using the measured data, the influence of three parameters on the stress concentration factors was investigated by a finite element analysis. It is shown that the three parameters have similar effects on the stress concentration factors. According to the simulation results, a formula to estimate the stress concentration factors of butt-weld welded structures was proposed and the estimated concentration factors from the formula were compared with the results obtained by the finite element analysis. The two results are in a good agreement.

Because of the huge lifting weight and complex structure of large-tonnage gantry crane and in order to effectively design and review it, this paper aims to carry out a research on its structural performance based on the method of theoretical calculation and finite element analysis. During the early period of design, the method of theoretical calculations is adopted, and after specific design it comes the finite element analysis, so as to get the results of analysis under a variety of operating conditions, which illustrates that the structural design and review of large-tonnage gantry crane based on theoretical calculations and finite element are feasible, and also verifies that the method of finite element is an effective way to find a real dangerous cross-section, thus providing the basis for the design and manufacture of the crane structure.

MFPSE, Micro Free Piston Swing Engine, is a new type of miniature internal combustion engine based on the working principle of two-stroke swing engine. The successful development and operation of this type of miniature internal combustion engine provide important significance for the miniaturization of the internal combustion engine, and provide a number of important research theory, computation method and experimental data. In this article, according to the work characteristics and co-ordination requirements of MFPSE (Micro Free Piston Swing Engine), whose strain interference is analyzed using finite element analysis software, the problems and interference of the center pendulum and cylinder is found evidently. The data of analysis provides theory basis for the MFPSE’s structural optimization, and is critical to improve the performance of MFPSE.

The concrete-filed square steel tube with inner I-shaped CFRP profiles short columns under bi-axial eccentric load were investigated by the finite element analysis software ABAQUS. The working mechanism of the composite columns which is under bi-axial eccentric load are investigated by using the stress distribution diagram of steel tube concrete and the I-shaped CFRP profiles. In this paper, the main parameters; eccentric ratio, steel ratio, steel yield strength, concrete compressive strength and CFRP distribution rate of the specimens were investigated to know the mechanical behavior of them. The interaction between the steel tube and the concrete interface at different characteristic points of the composite columns were analyzed. The results showed that the ultimate bearing capacity of the concrete-filed square steel tube with inner I-shaped CFRP profiles short columns under bi-axial eccentric load decrease with the increase of eccentric ratio, the ultimate bearing capacity of the composite columns increase with the increase of steel ratio, steel yield strength, concrete compressive strength and CFRP distribution rate. The contact pressure between the steel tube and the concrete decreased from the corner zone to the flat zone, and the contact pressure decreased from the mid-height cross section to other sections.
