Abstract Jakarta is known as a polluted city with a high air pollution index. One of the air pollution causes is particulate pollutants (PM2.5) and CO from incomplete combustion. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the government implemented a policy of Community Activity Restrictions, known as PPKM, to reduce the number of transmissions of the Covid-19. As one of the cities implementing the PPKM policy, Central Jakarta requires offices to implement Work From Home (WFH). The total PM2.5 air pollution concentration in the March 2020 WFH period was not much different from the previous five years. However, the CO concentration in the same period decreased compared to the last five years. Relationship analysis between the influence of weather parameters and pollutant concentrations shows that weather parameters are less significant on PM2.5 and CO concentration. The R-Square adj between several weather parameters on the concentration of PM2.5 and the concentration of CO is small. It means that weather parameters do not influence the reduction in the concentration of PM2.5 and CO. It is assumed that the PM2.5 and CO concentrations decreased due to fewer human activities in the office and public areas.

One of the high-risk areas of drought is Lombok Island. This area has 405,985 ha of drought risk. The severity of meteorological drought can be measured by the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). One of the characteristics of drought is the poor condition of plant vegetation, therefore the Standardized Vegetation Index (SVI) is used as a reference in monitoring agricultural drought. This study aims to determine the relationship of SPEI with SVI for each rainfall post in Lombok Island from 2001-2018. This study uses monthly data from 2001-2018, including observation data of rainfall, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, remote sensing Normalized Differences Vegetation Index (NDVI) 0.05 °, FLDAS model of wind speed 0.5 °, length of the day, latitude, and elevation. The use method is to calculate SPEI and SVI, then calculate the correlation and significance for the two drought indices. The result shows that SPEI1 is higher in correlation with SVI+1, which is in a strong enough category. For SPEI3, SPEI6, and SPEI12, the correlation is strong enough to strong with SVI0. This suggests that long-term drought will directly affect agricultural drought or immediate vegetation drought. The higher correlation values ??for each index are spread over the rain posts located in the middle of Lombok Island because geographic and demographic conditions influence them.

Abstract East Java is a region whose variations in rainfall are influenced by global and regional weather phenomena such as Dipole Mode, El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Intertropical Convergence Zone, Madden Julian Oscillation, and monsoons. Diverse topography is also a factor affecting rainfall in the area of East Java. Various indices are used to observe the activities of the weather phenomenon, such as DMI for Dipole Mode activities, NINO 3.4 for ENSO activities, RMM Index for MJO activities, as well as WNPMI and AUSMI for monsoon activities. In this study, spectral analysis was used by utilizing the Fast Fourier Transform method to see the periodicity of each index against the periodicity of rainfall from the 11 rainwater data points, which were divided into 6 coastal data points and 5 mountainous data points. Uniformity of weather phenomena with rainfall result among others Dipole Mode (18 months periodicity), ENSO (18 and 40-month periodicity), and MJO (2 and 3-month periodicity). Phenomena that affect rainfall in coastal and mountainous areas predominantly are monsoon, followed by ITCZ. Other phenomena affecting the coastal area include MJO dominant, and the ENSO and Dipole Mode phenomena that affect the Lamongan, Bunder, and P3GI regions with a stronger tendency to the Dipole Mode phenomenon. Another phenomenon that influences rain in the mountainous area is dominantly ENSO, while other phenomena include MJO phenomena in the Tosari area and Kebon Teh Wonosari region which has a tendency to be influenced by the Dipole Mode phenomenon despite the insignificant effect.

Abstract  The climate of Indonesia is strongly affected by the Asian-Australian monsoon system. The variability of the two monsoon systems can be well represented by the Western North Pacific Monsoon Index (WNPMI) and the Australian Summer Monsoon Index (AUSMI) respectively. For producing seasonal forecast, BMKG uses the WNPMI and AUSMI monsoon index to monitor monsoon activity in Indonesia. Although most literature states that the Indonesian region is part of the Asian-Australian monsoon system, the complex local topography may modify the monsoon circulation. Hence, it is necessary to assess the performance of the two indices before they are operationally used. This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the AUSMI and WNPMI monsoon indices in describing the annual cycle, intraseasonal and interannual variability of the Indonesian monsoon rainfall. The results revealed that the two indices only performed very well in the areas where the index was defined but lack of skill for the Indonesian region because of insignificant linear correlation based on a statistical significance test between the two indices and the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) rainfall in the 1981-2010 period. In addition, both monsoon indices and Java rainfall showed different characteristics of the annual cycle. These results indicate that it is necessary to define a specific index for monitoring monsoon activity in Indonesia.

Abstract Madden Julian oscillation (MJO) is a sub-seasonal wave oscillation in the tropics that propagates eastward from the Indian Ocean through the Indonesian Maritime Continent (IMC) until the Pacific Ocean. MJO propagation can increase convective and rainfall in the regions it passes. Lampung is one of the regions in the western IMC which near the Indian Ocean for the MJO first appeared. The Lampung position causes different insolation between land and sea diurnally, so the diurnal cycles play an important role in weather formation. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of MJO propagation phases 3-5 in 2018 on the diurnal cycle of atmospheric dynamics and rainfall in Lampung. The diurnal cycle was analyzed by dividing four periods of time, in the early morning (00-06 LT), morning (06-12 LT), afternoon (12-18 LT), and night (18-00 LT). Based on the average composite of ECMWF, GSMaP, and precipitation observations data were obtained that propagation MJO strengthens during phase 3-4 and weakens during phase 5. Diurnal strong convective and high rainfall occur in the oceans from early morning to morning, in coastal during the day, and on land at night which increases from phase 3-4 and weakens in phase 5. Rain propagates from western Lampung to central Lampung with a time lag of 2-5 hours during phase 3, 4-7 hours when phases 4, and 1 -2 hours during phase 5. In the 3-5 phase, rain occurs in eastern Lampung with a time difference of 1-3 hours from central Lampung.

Abstract Turbulence encountered by commercial aircraft Jakarta-Medan routes has been reported that experienced Clear Air Turbulence (CAT) over North Sumatra on October 24th, 2017. However, based on Himawari satellite imagery data produced by Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG), Indonesia stated that there was a cumulonimbus cloud around the turbulence location. This study utilizes WRF-ARW models with a high spatial and temporal resolution to find out in detail the processes that occur in convective clouds causing Near Cloud Turbulence (NCT). The turbulence was caused by a low Richardson number formed in the clear-air area, which has a distance of 300 - 700 m above the cloud top and reinforced by the existence of Turbulence Kinetic Energy (TKE) reaching 4,4 m2/s2 and vertical wind shear (VWS) by deep convection’s outflow.

Abstract Hygroscopic cloud seeding, which uses giant cloud condensation nuclei (GCCN) particles with diameters between 2-5 µm, has been known to be 100 times more effective compared to those that use hygroscopic flares. Micronisation through jet milling has been recognized as the most common and ubiquitous method used to obtain particles with such a narrow size (2-5 µm) distribution. This research has successfully developed and identified 2-5 µm NaCl powders mixed with 10% cab-o-sil anticaking agent and 2 (two) times jet milling frequency as a potential GCCN (hygroscopic) seeding material. We use a combination of jet mill micronisation, rough milling with a Cross-Beather Mill, and analytical sieving to produce powders with those mentioned above (2-5 µm) size distribution. We varied the anticaking agent percentage in the mixture and the jet milling process frequency to identify which parameters would result in the 2-5 µm size distribution. We then confirmed the micronisation results particle size distribution with a particle size analyzer (PSA) and its morphology with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) machine. The materials with the 10% cab-o-sil agent mixture were confirmed to have the aforementioned size distribution from the characterization results.

Abstract The end of 2019 was the beginning of Coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) spread throughout the world. This virus was first discovered in Wuhan, China, where many patients showed symptoms of pneumonia and are thought to have originated in a seafood market in Wuhan. Since March 2, 2020, the first positive patient was confirmed in DKI Jakarta and became the first case in Indonesia. Until December 2020, positive cases of Covid-19 continued increasing. Many studies have been carried out to find the virus behaviors, transmission, and the factors that influence the transmission, one of which is meteorological factors. Research in China and Iran, which are subtropical countries, shows that temperature and relative humidity strongly correlate with the increasing number of positive cases. Likewise, the research results in Brazil, which is a tropical country, show a negative correlation of solar radiation to positive cases. In Indonesia, research on the influence of meteorological factors on the transmission of Covid-19 has not been widely carried out. This study aims to examine the transmission of Covid-19 in DKI Jakarta from a meteorological perspective. The study results from 6 months of data show no significant influence between meteorological elements and the Covid-19 transmission in DKI Jakarta. The spatial distribution of daily rate increases does not follow the pattern of wind direction changes, and the Pearson correlation coefficient ??for temperature, temperature, and radiation has very small values.

Abstract The occurrence of peak phase shift of diurnal rainfall (DR) to active Madden-Jullian Oscillation (MJO) has been debatable, so this study is aimed to investigate the change. Moreover, the mean and amplitude intensity of DR were also analyzed in this study based on GSMaP Gauge-Calibrated V7. The composite of the mean (Ra) and amplitude (Rax) intensity anomaly of DR, and the comparison of DR peak phase during the active MJO to its climatology (Pax-Pm) in the period December-January-February (DJF), March-April-May (MAM), June-July-August (JJA), and September-October-November (SON) were used in the study with the z-test of 80%. The active MJO was based on reconstructed outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) of two real-time multivariate MJO (RMM) indexes. The results showed that active MJO modulated the increased mean and amplitude intensity of DR over the ocean and influenced the DR peak phase shift to be faster than its seasonal climatology by one hour.

Abstract Several studies used some equipment types to observe rain events, such as the Micro Rain Radar (MRR) and Disdrometer. Combining the two can provide a more comprehensive picture of rain events from the upper atmosphere to the surface. This study observed several rain events at the peak of the rainy season in 2017 and the turn of the year 2019/2020 in the Puspiptek Serpong Area, South Tangerang, using MRR and Disdrometer instruments to determine the characteristics of the droplet size distribution. This study's results indicate a different droplet size distribution pattern, between the incidence of rain with very heavy intensity and very light to dense, both in the upper atmosphere and surface. Besides, this study's results indicate that the very heavy rain events come from convective clouds with a 15-60 minutes rain duration. Meanwhile, light to moderate rain events generally come from a group of nimbostratus clouds in the medium-level atmosphere with a rain duration of roundabout 2-3 hours.
