Abstract For $G = \mathrm {GL}_2, \mathrm {SL}_2, \mathrm {PGL}_2$ we compute the intersection E-polynomials and the intersection Poincaré polynomials of the G-character variety of a compact Riemann surface C and of the moduli space of G-Higgs bundles on C of degree zero. We derive several results concerning the P=W conjectures for these singular moduli spaces.

We establish a gluing construction for Higgs bundles over a connected sum of Riemann surfaces in terms of solutions to the [Formula: see text]-Hitchin equations using the linearization of a relevant elliptic operator. The construction can be used to provide model Higgs bundles in all the [Formula: see text] exceptional components of the maximal [Formula: see text]-Higgs bundle moduli space, which correspond to components solely consisting of Zariski dense representations. This also allows a comparison between the invariants for maximal Higgs bundles and the topological invariants for Anosov representations constructed by Guichard and Wienhard.

Abstract We study irreducible $\mathop{\textrm{SL}}\nolimits _2$-representations of twist knots. We first determine all non-acyclic $\mathop{\textrm{SL}}\nolimits _2({\mathbb{C}})$-representations, which turn out to lie on a line denoted as $x=y$ in ${\mathbb{R}}^2$. Our main tools are character variety, Reidemeister torsion, and Chebyshev polynomials. We also verify a certain common tangent property, which yields a result on $L$-functions, that is, the orders of the knot modules associated to the universal deformations. Secondly, we prove that a representation is on the line $x=y$ if and only if it factors through the $-3$-Dehn surgery, and is non-acyclic if and only if the image of a certain element is of order 3. Finally, we study absolutely irreducible non-acyclic representations $\overline{\rho }$ over a finite field with characteristic $p>2$, to concretely determine all non-trivial $L$-functions $L_{{\boldsymbol{\rho }}}$ of the universal deformations over complete discrete valuation rings. We show among other things that $L_{{\boldsymbol{\rho }}}$  $\dot{=}$  $k_n(x)^2$ holds for a certain series $k_n(x)$ of polynomials.

The main goal of this paper is to reveal the symplectic structure related to renormalization of circle maps with breaks. We first show that iterated renormalizations of [Formula: see text] circle diffeomorphisms with [Formula: see text] breaks, [Formula: see text], with given size of breaks, converge to an invariant family of piecewise Möbius maps, of dimension [Formula: see text]. We prove that this invariant family identifies with a relative character variety [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text] is a [Formula: see text]-holed torus, and that the renormalization operator identifies with a sub-action of the mapping class group [Formula: see text]. This action allows us to introduce the symplectic form which is preserved by renormalization. The invariant symplectic form is related to the symplectic form described by Guruprasad et al. [Group systems, groupoids, and moduli spaces of parabolic bundles, Duke Math. J. 89(2) (1997) 377–412], and goes back to the earlier work by Goldman [The symplectic nature of fundamental groups of surfaces, Adv. Math. 54(2) (1984) 200–225]. To the best of our knowledge the connection between renormalization in the nonlinear setting and symplectic dynamics had not been brought to light yet.

Abstract Let $M$ be a compact 3-manifold and $\Gamma =\pi _1(M)$. Work by Thurston and Culler–Shalen established the ${\operatorname{\textrm{SL}}}_2({\mathbb{C}})$ character variety $X(\Gamma )$ as fundamental tool in the study of the geometry and topology of $M$. This is particularly the case when $M$ is the exterior of a hyperbolic knot $K$ in $S^3$. The main goals of this paper are to bring to bear tools from algebraic and arithmetic geometry to understand algebraic and number theoretic properties of the so-called canonical component of $X(\Gamma )$, as well as distinguished points on the canonical component, when $\Gamma $ is a knot group. In particular, we study how the theory of quaternion Azumaya algebras can be used to obtain algebraic and arithmetic information about Dehn surgeries, and perhaps of most interest, to construct new knot invariants that lie in the Brauer groups of curves over number fields.

Abstract The AJ Conjecture relates a quantum invariant, a minimal order recursion for the colored Jones polynomial of a knot (known as the $$\hat{A}$$ A ^ polynomial), with a classical invariant, namely the defining polynomial A of the $${\mathrm {PSL}_2(\mathbb {C})}$$ PSL 2 ( C ) character variety of a knot. More precisely, the AJ Conjecture asserts that the set of irreducible factors of the $$\hat{A}$$ A ^ -polynomial (after we set $$q=1$$ q = 1 , and excluding those of L-degree zero) coincides with those of the A-polynomial. In this paper, we introduce a version of the $$\hat{A}$$ A ^ -polynomial that depends on a planar diagram of a knot (that conjecturally agrees with the $$\hat{A}$$ A ^ -polynomial) and we prove that it satisfies one direction of the AJ Conjecture. Our proof uses the octahedral decomposition of a knot complement obtained from a planar projection of a knot, the R-matrix state sum formula for the colored Jones polynomial, and its certificate.
