PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to focus on an optimizing maintenance policy with repair limit time for a new type of aircraft component, in which the lifetime is assumed to be an uncertain variable due to no historical operation data, and the repair time is a random variable that can be described by the experimental data.Design/methodology/approachTo describe this repair limit time policy over an infinite time horizon, an extended uncertain random renewal reward theorem is firstly proposed based on chance theory, involves uncertain random interarrival times and stochastic rewards. Accordingly, the uncertain random programming model, which minimized the expected maintenance cost rate, is formulated to find the optimal repair limit time.FindingsA numerical example with sensitivity analysis is provided to illustrate the utility of the proposed policy. It provides a useful reference and guidance for aircraft optimization. For maintainers, it plays an important guiding role in engineering practice.Originality/valueThe proposed uncertain random renewal reward process proved useful for the optimization of maintenance strategy with maintenance limited time for a new type of aircraft components, which provides scientific support for aircraft maintenance decision-making for civil aviation enterprises.

Protection of the natural environment is a key activity driving development in the transport discipline today. The use of simulators to train civil aviation pilots provides an excellent opportunity to maintain the balance between efficiency and limit the negative impact of transport on the environment. Therefore, we decided to determine the impact of selected simulations of air operations on energy consumption. The aim of the research was to determine the energy consumption of the flight simulator depending on the type of flight operation and configuration used. We also decided to compare the obtained result with the energy consumption of an aircraft of a similar class, performing a similar aviation operation and other means of transport. In order to obtain the results, a research plan was proposed consisting of 12 scenarios differing in the simulated aircraft model, weather conditions and the use of the simulator motion platform. In each of the scenarios, energy consumption was measured, taking into account the individual components of the simulator. The research showed that the use of a flight simulator has a much smaller negative impact on the natural environment than flying in a traditional plane. Use of a motion platform indicated a change in energy consumption of approximately 40% (in general, flight simulator configuration can change energy consumption by up to 50%). The deterioration of weather conditions during the simulation caused an increase in energy consumption of 14% when motion was disabled and 18% when motion was enabled. Energy consumption in the initial stages of pilot training can be reduced by 97% by using flight simulators compared to aircraft training.

As with all transport modes, the maritime sector is undergoing a drastic transition towards net zero, similar to the path in which Aviation is already engaged through global decarbonization programs such as CORSIA for the International Civil Aviation Organization, or the Emission trading Scheme of the European Union). Maritime indeed shares with Aviation a common element: the difficulty of shifting to electric in the short to medium term. Therefore, the use of sustainable fuels represents the main and only relevant option in this timeframe. As sustainable biofuels will be used as blend components in the case of large-scale deployment, it is necessary to investigate the behavior of bio- and fossil-based fuels when mixed in various percentages, in particular for low quality products such as HTL (HydroThermal Liquefaction) and fast pyrolysis oils from lignocellulosic biomass and waste. Biocrude from subcritical hydrothermal liquefaction of undigested sewage sludge, produced at reaction conditions of 350 °C and 200 bar in a continuous HTL pilot scale unit, was manually mixed at 70 °C with residual marine fuel (low-sulphur type F-RMG-380 per ISO 8217) at two different nominal biocrude shares, respectively 10 wt.% and 20 wt.% in the mixture. While the former blend resulted in the technically complete dissolution of biocrude in the fossil component, the latter sample formed biocrude agglomerates and only partial dissolution of the biocrude aliquot in marine fuel could be achieved (calculated between 14–16 wt.%). The blend with 10 wt.% of SS biocrude in the mixture resulted in compliance with limits of total acid number (TAN), inorganics (in particular vanadium, sodium, silicon and aluminum) and sulphur content, while only the ash content was slightly above the limit.

Abstract Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) is a GNSS augmentation system that meets International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements to support precision approach and landing. GBAS is based on the local differential GNSS technique with reference stations located around the airport to provide necessary integrity and accuracy. The performance of the GBAS system can be affected by the gradient in the ionospheric delay between the aircraft and the reference stations. A nominal ionospheric gradient, which is bounded by a conservative error bound, is represented by a parameter σvig. σvig was commonly determined using station pair to GNSS Continuous Operating Reference Station (CORS) data. The station pair method is susceptible to doubling of receiver bias error and is not suitable with the CORS conditions in Indonesia. We propose a satellite pair method that is found to be more suitable for the CORS network over Indonesia which is centered in Java and Sumatra islands. The value of σvig (4.48 mm/km) is obtained using this method along with the preliminary results of a comparison of σvig from Java and Sumatra islands.

Aiming at the problem wherein temperature inversion accuracy is unstable due to the major differences in atmospheric transmittance under various observation paths, a method for measuring radiation characteristics of an aircraft engine’s hot parts and skin using a cooled middle-wave infrared camera is proposed. Based on the analysis of the aircraft’s infrared radiation characteristics, the atmospheric transmission model of any observation path was revised, the absolute radiation correction model was established, and the temperature inversion equation was calculated. Then, we used the quasi-Newton method to calculate the skin temperature and discussed uncertainty sources. After the theoretical study, an outfield test was carried out. A middle-wave infrared camera with a wavelength of 3.7–4.8 μm was applied to the actual experimental observation of the turbofan civil aviation aircraft. The ground observation distance was 15 km, and the flying height was 3 km. When implementing temperature inversion with the method presented in this paper, the surface temperature of the aircraft engine hot parts was 381 K, the correction uncertainty was ±10 K, the surface temperature of the skin was 296 K, and the correction uncertainty was ±6 K. As the experiment showed, the method in this paper can effectively implement infrared target temperature inversion and provide a reference for the quantification of infrared data.
