Symphyotrichum anticostense (Fernald) G.L.Nesom (Asteraceae: Astereae), a rare endemic of the Gulf of St. Lawrence region is a high allopolyploid (2n=10x=80). It has been hypothesized to be derived from the hybrid between tetraploid (2n=4x=32) individuals of S. boreale (Torr. & A.Gray) Löve & Löve and the hexaploid (2n=6x=48) S. novi-belgii (L.) G.L.Nesom. We investigated this hypothesis using morphological and molecular ITS-sequence data, and we tried to determine the potentially geographic origins of the taxon. Univariate morphological analyses show that 67.5% of the S. anticostense characters are parent-like, 43.5% from S. novi-belgii and 13% from S. boreale, the remainder not differing statistically from either parent; 23.5% are intermediate; and 9% transgressive. Multivariate analyses show that S. anticostense is intermediate between its putative parents. The molecular results support the morphological data, but due to the insufficient resolution among ribotypes on the tree, a more rapidly evolving marker will be needed to ascertain more reliably the origin of S. anticostense. Besides the hypothesis of genetic drift and allele fixation following long-distance dispersals, at least three independent geographic origins may be suggested for S. anticostense; Anticosti Island, Lake St. John, and Gaspé Peninsula-New Brunswick-Maine.

Anaerobic cellulolytic microbes in gastrointestinal tract (GT) of ruminants have been well-documented, however, knowledge of aerobic microbes with cellulolytic activities in ruminant GT is comparably limited. Here, we unraveled aerobic cultivable cellulolytic microbes in GT of Ujimqin sheep (Ovis aries) and evaluated the cellulolytic potential of promising isolates. Twenty-two strains were found to possess cellulose degrading potential by Congo-red staining and phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rDNA/ITS sequence revealed that all strains belonged to nine genera, i.e., Bacillus, Streptomyces, Pseudomonas, Lactobacillus, Brachybacterium, Sanguibacter, Rhizobium, Fusarium, and Aspergillus. Strains with high cellulolytic activities were selected to further evaluate the various enzyme activities on lignocellulosic alfalfa hay (Medicago sativa). Among them, isolate Bacillus subtilis RE2510 showed the highest potential of cellulose degradation considering the high endoglucanase (0.1478 ± 0.0014 IU ml-1), exoglucanase (0.1735 ± 0.0012 IU ml-1) and β-glucosidase (0.3817 ± 0.0031 IU ml-1) after 10-day incubation with alfalfa hay. A significant destruction effect of the cellulose structure and the attachment of B. subtilis RE2510 to the hay were also revealed by using scanning electron microscope. This study expands our knowledge of aerobic cellulolytic isolates from GT of sheep and also highlights their potential application as microbial additive in the aerobic process of cellulose bioconversion.

Abstract In 1993, Alcantara-Bode showed ([2]) that Riemann Hypothesisholds if and only if the integral operator on the Hilbert space L2(0; 1)having the kernel function defined by the fractional part of (y/x), isinjective. Since then, the injectivity of the integral operator used inequivalent formulation of RH has not been addressed nor has beendissociated from RH.We provided in this paper methods for investigating the injectivityof linear bounded operators on separable Hilbert spaces using theirapproximations on dense families of subspaces.On the separable Hilbert space L2(0,1), an linear bounded operator(or its associated Hermitian), strict positive definite on a dense familyof including approximation subspaces in built on simple functions, isinjective if the rate of convergence of its sequence of injectivity pa-rameters on approximation subspaces is inferior bounded by a not nullconstant, that is the case with the Beurling - Alcantara-Bode integraloperator.We applied these methods to the integral operator used in RHequivalence proving its injectivity.

Two species, namely Russula adwanitekae A.Ghosh, K.Das & Buyck sp. nov. and Russula purpureozonata K.Das, A.Ghosh & Buyck sp. nov. are proposed herein as new mushroom taxa from the Indian Himalaya based on their morphological features and ITS-based phylogenetic inferences. Both species belong to the crown clade of Russula subgenus Russula but with affinities to different subsections, viz. subsect. Laricinae Romagn. and subsect. Decolorantes Maire, respectively. Russula adwanitekae sp. nov. was collected in mixed temperate forests where it is most likely associated with conifers. It is distinct from several similarly looking, small, mild species with dark spore print and reddish lilac, orchid purple or greyish to deep magenta colored pileus in subsect. Laricinae by its sequence data (nrITS) or geographic distribution. Russula purpureozonata sp. nov. associates with Abies densa Griff., and possesses all typical features of Decolorantes, viz. the amyloid suprahilar spot on the spores, presence of pileogloeocystidia, the reddening then blackening context, equal lamellae and colored spore print. It reminds of North American R. californiensis Burl. and R. magna Beardslee under the microscope but has distinctly smaller spores and differs further in the unique coloration and concentrically zonated pileus margin. Macro- and micromorphological features are illustrated for both species. Their habitats, distributions and relationships with allied species are discussed.

Begonia fenshuilingensis X.X.Feng, R.K.Li & Z.X.Liu, a new species in Begonia sect. Platycentrum (Klotzsch) A.DC. (Begoniaceae) from southeastern Yunnan, China, is here described and illustrated. It morphologically resembles B. dryadis and B. daweishanensis, but differs by its fleshy trigonous-ellipsoid capsules without wings. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of ITS sequence data supports the new species as monophyletic, and distinct from the two similar species. Due to its limited distribution, we consider the new taxon as “Vulnerable D2” (VU D2) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

In silico prediction is a well-established approach to derive a general shape of an RNA molecule based on its sequence or secondary structure. This paper reports an analysis of the stereochemical quality of the RNA three-dimensional models predicted using dedicated computer programs. The stereochemistry of 1,052 RNA 3D structures, including 1,030 models predicted by fully automated and human-guided approaches within 22 RNA-Puzzles challenges and reference structures, is analysed. The evaluation is based on standards of RNA stereochemistry that the Protein Data Bank requires from deposited experimental structures. Deviations from standard bond lengths and angles, planarity or chirality are quantified. A reduction in the number of such deviations should help in the improvement of RNA 3D structure modelling approaches.
