<p style="text-align: justify;">The article aims to develop a machine-learning algorithm that can predict student’s graduation in the Industrial Engineering course at the Federal University of Amazonas based on their performance data. The methodology makes use of an information package of 364 students with an admission period between 2007 and 2019, considering characteristics that can affect directly or indirectly in the graduation of each one, being: type of high school, number of semesters taken, grade-point average, lockouts, dropouts and course terminations. The data treatment considered the manual removal of several characteristics that did not add value to the output of the algorithm, resulting in a package composed of 2184 instances. Thus, the logistic regression, MLP and XGBoost models developed and compared could predict a binary output of graduation or non-graduation to each student using 30% of the dataset to test and 70% to train, so that was possible to identify a relationship between the six attributes explored and achieve, with the best model, 94.15% of accuracy on its predictions.</p>

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease associated with pain and disability. OA patients are at a high risk for venous thrombosis (VTE). Here, we developed an interpretable machine learning (ML)-based model to predict VTE risk in patients with OA. To establish a prediction model, we used six ML algorithms, of which 35 variables were employed. Recursive feature elimination (RFE) was used to screen the most related clinical variables associated with VTE. SHapley additive exPlanations (SHAP) were applied to interpret the ML mode and determine the importance of the selected features. Overall, 3169 patients with OA (average age: 66.52 ± 7.28 years) were recruited from Xi’an Honghui Hospital. Of these, 352 and 2817 patients were diagnosed with and without VTE, respectively. The XGBoost algorithm showed the best performance. According to the RFE algorithms, 15 variables were retained for further modeling with the XGBoost algorithm. The top three predictors were Kellgren–Lawrence grade, age, and hypertension. Our study showed that the XGBoost model with 15 variables has a high potential to predict VTE risk in patients with OA.

For defining the optimal machine learning algorithm, the decision was not easy for which we shall choose. To help future researchers, we describe in this paper the optimal among the best of the algorithms. We built a synthetic data set and performed the supervised machine learning runs for five different algorithms. For heterogeneous rock fabric, we identified Random Forest, among others, to be the appropriate algorithm.

The internet content increases exponentially day-by-day leading to the pop-up of irrelevant data while searching. Thus, the vast availability of web data requires curation to enhance the results of the search in relevance to searched topics. The proposed F-CapsNet deals with the content curation of web blog data through the novel integration of fuzzy logic with a machine learning algorithm. The input content to be curated is initially pre-processed and seven major features such as sentence position, bigrams, TF-IDF, cosine similarity, sentence length, proper noun score and numeric token are extracted. Then the fuzzy rules are applied to generate the extractive summary. After the extractive curation, the output is passed to the novel capsule network based deep auto-encoder where the abstractive summary is produced. The performance measures such as precision, recall, F1-score, accuracy and specificity are computed and the results are compared with the existing state-of-the-art methods. From the simulations performed, it has been proven that the proposed method for content curation is more efficient than any other method.

Abstract. Insights from a geoscience communication activity, verified using preliminary investigations with an artificial neural network, illustrate that observation of humans' abilities can help design an effective artificial intelligence or “AI”. Even given only one set of “training” examples, survey participants could visually recognize which flow conditions created bedforms (e.g. sand dunes and riverbed ripples) from their shapes, but an interpreter's geoscience expertise does not help. Together, these observations were interpreted as indicating that a machine learning algorithm might be trained successfully from limited data, particularly if it is “helped” by pre-processing bedforms into a simple shape familiar from childhood play.
