Friction stir welding (FSW) is considered to be the most significant development in solid state metal joining processes. This joining technique is energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and versatile. In particular, it can be used to join high-strength aerospace aluminum alloys and other metallic alloys that are hard to weld by conventional fusion welding. The project aims to join Aluminum 6063 alloy plates by FSW and emphasize the (1) mechanisms responsible for the formation of welds without any defects, microstructural refinement, and (2) effects of FSW parameters on resultant microstructure, mechanical, and corrosion properties.

Abstract We numerically and experimentally investigate aluminum metal (Al), gold-tin (AuSn) and titanium-tungsten (TiW) metallic alloys as plasmonic materials in the mid-infrared (MIR) region using spectroscopic ellipsometry and reflection measurements of gratings. The angle dependence of the specular reflectance of shallow gratings is investigated using a free-beam measurement setup and compared to simulations. It is shown that the deep and narrow resonances observed for all three materials match the associated prediction from simulations.

In the present research paper, two systems based on Ti-Nb-Zr-Ta and Ti-Nb-Zr–Fe, containing non-toxic elements, are considered and investigated. The first aim of the paper is to enlarge up-to-date developed β-type Ti alloys, analyzing three different compositions, Ti-10Nb-10Zr-5Ta, Ti-20Nb-20Zr-4Ta and Ti-29.3Nb-13.6Zr-1.9Fe, in order to assess their further employment in biomedical applications. To achieve this, structural, microstructural, compositional and mechanical investigations were performed as part of this study. Based on the results obtained, the alloy with the highest Nb content seems to be the most appropriate candidate for advanced biomedical applications and, in particular, for bone substitution.

Starting with a description of the meaning of sustainable coating nowadays, this review presents a selection of methods for sustainable coatings manufacture using raw materials, saving energy and costs. This selection creates an introduction for the coatings performances of intensively investigated coated alloys and their multifunctionality. There are many examples and EU recommendations to be discussed, and we especially chose to introduce sustainable coatings with both industrial and medical functions, such as bioinspired films and coatings on high-entropy alloys, biodegradable metallic alloys, etc. A special focus is on nanotechnology and nanomaterials in green procedures, enhancing coatings’ multifunctionality, introducing green corrosion inhibitors, smart additives, and coatings based on superhydrophobicity. The conclusions and future perspectives of sustainable and multifunctional coatings, as expressions of sustainable advanced materials, are based on important motivations of such studies.
