Affective technology offers exciting opportunities to improve road safety by catering to human emotions. Modern car interiors enable the contactless detection of user states, paving the way for a systematic promotion of safe driver behavior through emotion regulation. We review the current literature regarding the impact of emotions on driver behavior and analyze the state of emotion regulation approaches in the car. We summarize challenges for affective interaction in the form of technological hurdles and methodological considerations, as well as opportunities to improve road safety by reinstating drivers into an emotionally balanced state. The purpose of this review is to outline the community’s combined knowledge for interested researchers, to provide a focussed introduction for practitioners, raise awareness for cultural aspects, and to identify future directions for affective interaction in the car.

This study aims to build a system for detecting a driver’s internal state using body-worn sensors. Our system is intended to detect inattentive driving that occurs during long-term driving on a monotonous road, such as a high-way road. The inattentive state of a driver in this study is an absent-minded state caused by a decrease in driver vigilance levels due to fatigue or drowsiness. However, it is difficult to clearly define these inattentive states because it is difficult for the driver to recognize when they fall into an absent-minded state. To address this problem and achieve our goal, we have proposed a detection algorithm for inattentive driving that not only uses a heart rate sensor, but also uses body-worn inertial sensors, which have the potential to detect driver behavior more accurately and at a much lower cost. The proposed method combines three detection models: body movement, drowsiness, and inattention detection, based on an anomaly detection algorithm. Furthermore, we have verified the accuracy of the algorithm with the experimental data for five participants that were measured in long-term and monotonous driving scenarios by using a driving simulator. The results indicate that our approach can detect both the inattentive and drowsiness states of drivers using signals from both the heart rate sensor and accelerometers placed on wrists.

The Internet of connected vehicles (IoCV) has made people more comfortable and safer while driving vehicles. This technology has made it possible to reduce road casualties; however, increased traffic and uncertainties in environments seem to be limitations to improving the safety of environments. In this paper, driver behavior is analyzed to provide personalized assistance and to alert surrounding vehicles in case of emergencies. The processes involved in this research are as follows. (i) Initially, the vehicles in an environment are clustered to reduce the complexity in analyzing a large number of vehicles. Multi-criterion-based hierarchical correlation clustering (MCB-HCC) is performed to dynamically cluster vehicles. Vehicular motion is detected by edge-assisted road side units (E-RSUs) by using an attention-based residual neural network (AttResNet). (ii) Driver behavior is analyzed based on the physiological parameters of drivers, vehicle on-board parameters, and environmental parameters, and driver behavior is classified into different classes by implementing a refined asynchronous advantage actor critic (RA3C) algorithm for assistance generation. (iii) If the driver’s current state is found to be an emergency state, an alert message is disseminated to the surrounding vehicles in that area and to the neighboring areas based on traffic flow by using jelly fish search optimization (JSO). If a neighboring area does not have a fog node, a virtual fog node is deployed by executing a constraint-based quantum entropy function to disseminate alert messages at ultra-low latency. (iv) Personalized assistance is provided to the driver based on behavior analysis to assist the driver by using a multi-attribute utility model, thereby preventing road accidents. The proposed driver behavior analysis and personalized assistance model are experimented on with the Network Simulator 3.26 tool, and performance was evaluated in terms of prediction error, number of alerts, number of risk maneuvers, accuracy, latency, energy consumption, false alarm rate, safety score, and alert-message dissemination efficiency.

A new model is proposed to characterize changes in traffic at transitions. These changes are affected by driver response. The distance headway between vehicles is considered as it affects driver behavior. Driver response is quick with a small distance headway and slow when the distance headway is large. The variations in traffic are greater with a slow driver while traffic is smooth with a quick driver. A model is developed which characterizes traffic based on driver response and distance headway. This model is compared with the well-known and widely employed Zhang and PW models. The Zhang model characterizes driver response at transitions using an equilibrium velocity distribution and ignores distance headway and driver response. Traffic flow in the PW model is characterized using only a velocity constant. Roe decomposition is employed to evaluate the Zhang, PW, and proposed models over a 270 m circular (ring) road. Results are presented which show that Zhang model provides unrealistic results. The corresponding behavior with the proposed model has large variations in flow with a slow driver but is smooth with a quick driver. The PW model provides smooth changes in flow according to the velocity constant, but the behavior is unrealistic because it is not based on traffic physics. Doi: 10.28991/CEJ-SP2021-07-03 Full Text: PDF
