Abstract We discuss a non-dynamical theory of gravity in three dimensions which is based on an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra that is closely related to an infinite-dimensional extended AdS algebra. We find an intriguing connection between on the one hand higher-derivative gravity theories that are consistent with the holographic c-theorem and on the other hand truncations of this infinite-dimensional Lie algebra that violate the Lie algebra structure. We show that in three dimensions different truncations reproduce, up to terms that do not contribute to the c-theorem, Chern-Simons-like gravity models describing extended 3D massive gravity theories. Performing the same procedure with similar truncations in dimensions larger than or equal to four reproduces higher derivative gravity models that are known in the literature to be consistent with the c-theorem but do not have an obvious connection to massive gravity like in three dimensions.

AbstractWe consider integrability structures of the generalized Hunter–Saxton equation. We obtain the Lax representation with non-removable spectral parameter, find local recursion operators for symmetries and cosymmetries, generate an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra of higher symmetries, and prove existence of infinite number of cosymmetries of higher order. Further, we give examples of employing the higher order symmetries to constructing exact globally defined solutions for the generalized Hunter–Saxton equation.

This paper is devoted to study 2-local derivations on [Formula: see text]-algebra [Formula: see text] which is an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra with some outer derivations. We prove that all 2-local derivations on the [Formula: see text]-algebra [Formula: see text] are derivations. We also give a complete classification of the 2-local derivation on the so-called thin Lie algebra and prove that it admits many 2-local derivations which are not derivations.

AbstractThe Virasoro algebra $\mathcal {L}$ is an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra with basis {Lm, C| m ∈ ℤ} and relations [Lm, Ln] = (n − m)Lm+n + δm+n,0((m3 − m)/12)C, [Lm, C] = 0 for m, n ∈ ℤ. Let $\mathfrak a$ be the subalgebra of $\mathcal {L}$ spanned by Li for i ≥ −1. For any triple (μ, λ, α) of complex numbers with μ ≠ 0, λ ≠ 0 and any non-trivial $\mathfrak a$-module V satisfying the condition: for any v ∈ V there exists a non-negative integer m such that Liv = 0 for all i ≥ m, non-weight $\mathcal {L}$-modules on the linear tensor product of V and ℂ[∂], denoted by $\mathcal {M}(V,\mu ,\Omega (\lambda ,\alpha ))\ (\Omega (\lambda ,\alpha )=\mathbb {C}[\partial ]$ as vector spaces), are constructed in this paper. We prove that $\mathcal {M}(V,\mu ,\Omega (\lambda ,\alpha ))$ is simple if and only if μ ≠ 1, λ ≠ 0, α ≠ 0. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for two such simple $\mathcal {L}$-modules being isomorphic. Finally, these simple $\mathcal {L}$-modules $\mathcal {M}(V,\mu ,\Omega (\lambda ,\alpha ))$ are proved to be new for V not being the highest weight $\mathfrak a$-module whose highest weight is non-zero.

In the present paper, we study 2-local derivations of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras over a field of characteristic zero. We prove that all 2-local derivations of the Witt algebra as well as of the positive Witt algebra and the classical one-sided Witt algebra are (global) derivations. We also give an example of an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra with a 2-local derivation which is not a derivation.

In this paper, we studied the jet modules for the centerless Virasoro-like algebra which is the Lie algebra of the Lie group of the area-preserving diffeomorphisms of a [Formula: see text]-torus. The jet modules are certain natural modules over the Lie algebra of semi-direct product of the centerless Virasoro-like algebra and the Laurent polynomial algebra in two variables. We reduce the irreducible jet modules to the finite-dimensional irreducible modules over some infinite-dimensional Lie algebra and then characterize the irreducible jet modules with irreducible finite dimensional modules over [Formula: see text]. To determine the indecomposable jet modules, we use the technique of polynomial modules in the sense of [Irreducible representations for toroidal Lie algebras, J. Algebras 221 (1999) 188–231; Weight modules over exp-polynomial Lie algebras, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 191 (2004) 23–42]. Consequently, indecomposable jet modules are described using modules over the algebra [Formula: see text], which is the “positive part” of a Block type algebra studied first by [Some infinite-dimensional simple Lie algebras in characteristic [Formula: see text] related to those of Block, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 127(2) (1998) 153–165] and recently by [A [Formula: see text]-graded generalization of the Witt-algebra, preprint; Classification of simple Lie algebras on a lattice, Proc. London Math. Soc. 106(3) (2013) 508–564]).

Given a matrix Lie algebra one can construct the 3-Lie algebra by means of the trace of a matrix. In the present paper, we show that this approach can be extended to the infinite-dimensional Lie algebra of vector fields on a manifold if instead of the trace of a matrix we consider a differential 1-form which satisfies certain conditions. Then we show that the same approach can be extended to matrix Lie superalgebras [Formula: see text] if instead of the trace of a matrix we make use of the supertrace of a matrix. It is proved that a graded triple commutator of matrices constructed with the help of the graded commutator and the supertrace satisfies a graded ternary Filippov–Jacobi identity. In two particular cases of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], we show that the Pauli and Dirac matrices generate the matrix 3-Lie superalgebras, and we find the non-trivial graded triple commutators of these algebras. We propose a Clifford algebra approach to 3-Lie superalgebras induced by Lie superalgebras. We also discuss an application of matrix 3-Lie superalgebras in BRST-formalism.

In this paper, we study an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra ℬq, called the q-analog Klein bottle Lie algebra. We show that ℬq is a finitely generated simple Lie algebra with a unique (up to scalars) symmetric invariant bilinear form. The derivation algebra and the universal central extension of ℬq are also determined.
