Abstract Mobile edge computing (MEC) has been considered as a key enabler for the industrial internet of things (IIoT) to cope with the ever-increasing communication and computing demands of nodes. In consideration of the limited power and resource of the IIoT nodes, it is necessary to design cost-effective data sharing mechanisms for MEC-enabled wireless industrial communication networks. In this article, we propose the probabilistic cooperative coded forwarding (PCCF) scheme based on network coding (NC) to minimize the required transmission number in both the data source and relay nodes. The data packets are encoded sparsely in a systematic coding framework so that the decoding process at the receivers can be more efficient. The relationship between the forwarding and coding parameters of the proposed scheme and the successful decoding probability are comprehensively analyzed and the approximations are numerically verified. Throughout the analysis, we find the optimal sparsity of network coding vectors and also the existence of minimum transmission numbers.

Coffee berry disease (CBD) can cause significant coffee yield losses along with major income losses for African smallholders. Although these farmers cannot afford to purchase pesticides to control the disease, agroecological solutions have rarely been investigated, and how epidemiological mechanisms are linked to the environment of the coffee tree and the plot remains unclear. Agroforestry systems are a promising agroecological option, but the effect of shade on CBD regulation is the subject of debate, and the use of plant species diversity remains uncertain. Here, we address how shade affects epidemiological mechanisms by modifying the microclimate. For this purpose, we developed a mechanistic susceptible-exposed-infectious-removed (SEIR) model, and used a Bayesian framework to infer the epidemiological parameters against microclimatic covariates. We show that shade has opposing effects on different epidemiological mechanisms. Specifically, shade can limit disease dynamics by reducing disease transmission while simultaneously promoting disease dynamics by reducing the latent period of the pathogen. However, in full sun, efficient disease transmission compensates for long latent periods. As a result, the balances between microclimatic variables can counterbalance the epidemiological rates, which can dramatically alter the fate of epidemics in shade versus full sun conditions. We propose research avenues to help design cost- and environmentally effective management strategies for CBD that are notably based on the functional traits of shade trees that could hamper CBD dispersal.

The implementation of vertical slot fishway (VSF) has been demonstrated to be an effective mitigation measure to alleviate extensive river fragmentation by artificial hydraulic structures such as weirs and dams. However, non-suitable flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy significantly affect fish swimming behavior and, as a result, hinder such facilities’ performance. Therefore, this study’s main objective is to propose a new configuration of VSF that can allow the passage of different fish species under frequent variations of flow discharge. To achieve that objective several novel configurations of VSF were numerically investigated using the FLOW-3D® model. Namely, five variants of angles between baffles, four different pool widths, and another upgraded version of VSF by introducing cylindrical elements positioned after the opening behind the baffles were tested. Results show that smaller angles between baffles increase the Vmax and decrease the maximum turbulent kinetic energy (TKEmax); the opposite result was obtained when increasing angles between baffles. Namely, the Vmax was increased up to 17.9% for α = 0° and decreased up to 20.37% for α = 37°; in contrast, TKEmax decreased up to −20% for α = 0° and increased up to 26.5% for α = 37°. Narrowing the pool width increased the Vmax linearly; nevertheless, it did not significantly affect the TKEmax as the maximum difference was only +3.5%. Using cylinders with a large diameter decreased the Vmax and increased TKEmax; in contrast, using cylinders with smaller diameters further reduced the Vmax velocity inside the pool while increasing the TKEmax. However, in the case of cylinders, the dimension of the recirculation depended on the configuration and arrangement of the cylinder within the pool. Overall, the maximum velocity was reached at near 77% of the water depth in all cases. Finally, solution-oriented findings resulted from this study would help water engineers to design cost-effective VSF fishways to support the sustainable development of hydraulic structures while preserving aquatic biodiversity.

Solving of combinatorial optimization problems is a common practice in real-life engineering applications. Trusses, cranes, and composite laminated structures are some good examples that fall under this category of optimization problems. Those examples have a common feature of discrete design domain that turn them into a set of NP-hard optimization problems. Determining the right optimization algorithm for such problems is a precious point that tends to impact the overall cost of the design process. Furthermore, reinforcing the performance of a prospective optimization algorithm reduces the design cost. In the current study, a comprehensive assessment criterion has been developed to assess the performance of meta-heuristic (MH) solutions in the domain of structural design. Thereafter, the proposed criterion was employed to compare five different variants of Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). It was done by using a well-known structural optimization problem of laminate Stacking Sequence Design (SSD). The initial results of the comparison study reveal that the Hyper-Cube Framework (HCF) ACO variant outperforms the others. Consequently, an investigation of further improvement led to introducing an enhanced version of HCFACO (or EHCFACO). Eventually, the performance assessment of the EHCFACO variant showed that the average practical reliability became more than twice that of the standard ACO, and the normalized price decreased more to hold at 28.92 instead of 51.17.

This paper proposes a methodology for the layout selection of an urban drainage system as an extension to the methodology for an optimal sewer network design proposed by Duque, Duque, Aguilar, & Saldarriaga. The layout selection approach proposed in this paper uses an objective function that takes into account all input data in the problem, such as: land topography, street network topology, and inflow to each manhole. Once the layout is selected, the network is optimally designed using dynamic programming. The problem of layout selection is solved as a mixed-integer programming problem and is divided into two steps. The first step tries to define an initial layout using the network topology and land topography as a criterion. This allows for an initial hydraulic design and an approximation of the sewer network’s construction costs. The second step uses the data obtained in the previous process to establish an approximation of the construction costs of each arc that can be part of the layout. This is in order to minimize the objective function of the layout selection problem so that the hydraulic design cost is also minimized. The methodology was successfully tested on three case studies: the Chicó sewer network proposed by Duque et al. and two sewer network benchmarks from the literature.

The exponentially increasing occurrence of soft errors makes the optimization of reliability, performance, hardware area, and power consumption one of the main concerns in modern embedded processors. Since the design cost of hardware techniques aimed at improving the reliability of microprocessors is quite expensive for resource-constrained embedded systems, software-level fault tolerance mechanisms have been proposed as an attractive solution for soft error threats. However, many software-level redundancy-based schemes are accompanied by considerable performance overhead, which is not acceptable for many embedded applications. In this work, we have introduced an ultra-low-cost soft error protection scheme for embedded applications, which works based on source-code analysis and identifying critical variables. After identification, these vital variables are adequately protected by placing runtime checks at critical points of execution. Our experimental results based on several applications demonstrate that the proposed scheme can mitigate the failure rate by 47% with negligible performance degradation.
