<p>In this thesis new robust methods for the efficient sharing of the radio spectrum for underlay cognitive radio (CR) systems are developed. These methods provide robustness against uncertainties in the channel state information (CSI) that is available to the cognitive radios. A stochastic approach is taken and the robust spectrum sharing methods are formulated as convex optimisation problems. Three efficient spectrum sharing methods; power control, cooperative beamforming and conventional beamforming are studied in detail.  The CR power control problem is formulated as a sum rate maximisation problem and transformed into a convex optimisation problem. A robust power control method under the assumption of partial CSI is developed and also transformed into a convex optimisation problem. A novel method of detecting and removing infeasible constraints from the power allocation problem is presented that results in considerably improved performance. The performance of the proposed methods in Rayleigh fading channels is analysed by simulations.  The concept of cooperative beamforming for spectrum sharing is applied to an underlay CR relay network. Distributed single antenna relay nodes are utilised to form a virtual antenna array that provides increased gains in capacity through cooperative beamforming. It is shown that the cooperative beamforming problems can be transformed into convex optimisation problems. New robust cooperative beamformers under the assumption of partial and imperfect CSI are developed and also transformed into convex optimisation problems. The performance of the proposed methods in Rayleigh fading channels is analysed by simulations.  Conventional beamforming to allow efficient spectrum sharing in an underlay CR system is studied. The beamforming problems are formulated and transformed into convex optimisation problems. The Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique combined with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been considered to enhance total system performance. This paper studies the bit error rate of two-user power-domain NOMA systems using successive interference cancellation receivers, with zeroforcing equalization over quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels. Successive interference cancellation technique at NOMA receivers has been the popular research topic due to its simple implementation, despite its vulnerability to error propagation. Closed-form expressions are derived for downlink NOMA in single-input single-output and uncorrelated quasi-static MIMO Rayleigh fading channel. Analytical results are consolidated with Monte Carlo simulation.

In practice, self-interference (SI) in full-duplex (FD) wireless communication systems cannot be completely eliminated due to imperfections in different factors, such as the SI channel estimation and hardware circuits. Therefore, residual SI (RSI) always exists in FD systems. In addition, hardware impairments (HIs) cannot be avoided in FD systems due to the non-ideal characteristics of electronic components. These issues motivate us to consider an FD-HI system with a decode-and-forward (DF) relay that is applied for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. Unlike previous works, the performance of the proposed FD-HI-V2V system is evaluated over cascaded Rayleigh fading channels (CRFCs). We mathematically obtain the exact closed-form expressions of the outage probability (OP), system throughput (ST), and ergodic capacity (EC) of the proposed FD-HI-V2V system under the joint and crossed effects of the RSI, HIs, and CRFCs. We validate all derived expressions via Monte-Carlo simulations. Based on these expressions, the OP, ST, and EC of the proposed FD-HI-V2V system are investigated and compared with other related systems, such as ideal hardware (ID) and half-duplex (HD) systems, as well as a system over traditional Rayleigh fading channels (RFCs), to clearly show the impacts of negative factors.

Digital modulation increases information capacity, data security, and system availability while maintaining high communication quality. As a result, digital modulation techniques are in higher demand than analog modulation techniques due to their ability to transmit larger amounts of data. Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK), Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), Phase Shift Keying (PSK), Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK), and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) are critical components of current communications systems development, particularly for broadband wireless communications. In this paper, the comparison of bit error rate performance of different modulation schemes (BPSK, QPSK, and16-QAM) and various equalization techniques such as constant modulus algorithm (CMA) and maximum likelihood sequence estimate (MLSE) for the AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels is analyzed using Simulink. BPSK outperforms QPSK and 16-QAM when compared to the other two digital modulation schemes. Among the three digital modulation schemes, BPSK is showing better performance as compared to QPSK and 16-QAM.
