Predictions about life-history evolution are intellectually bereft without a consideration of trade-offs. Benefits derived from making one life-history ‘decision’ are made at a cost of not realizing potential benefits associated with alternative decisions. These trade-offs are the inevitable product of constraints, often driven by an individual’s differential allocation of fixed resources to reproduction versus survival or growth. These allocations prevent multiple positive outcomes from being simultaneously realized. Reproductive effort is the proportion of total energy or resources allocated to all elements of reproduction. Reproductive effort generates reproductive costs. Increases in current reproductive effort reduce future reproductive success by affecting survival, growth, and/or fecundity. The causal mechanisms of these costs can be energetic, ecological, behavioural, or genetic. Evidence for reproductive costs is widespread. Instances where the evidence of costs is equivocal are usually caused by using among-individual correlations to study what is a within-individual phenomenon.

Abstract Background When males are selective, they can either reject low-quality females or adjust their reproductive investment in response to traits that indicate female quality (e.g., body size or condition). According to the differential allocation hypothesis, males increase their reproductive investment when paired with high-quality females (positive differential allocation) or increase their reproductive investment when paired with low-quality females (negative differential allocation). This hypothesis has been proposed for monogamous species with biparental care, and most empirical studies focus on birds. Here we used the polygamous spider Paratrechalea ornata, in which males offer prey wrapped in silk as nuptial gifts, to test whether males adjust their reproductive investment in gift size, pre-copulatory and copulatory courtship, and sperm transfer in response to female body condition. Results Males exposed to females in good body condition added more flies to the gift, stimulated these females longer with abdominal touches during pre-copulatory courtship, and had longer pedipalp insertions than males exposed to females in poor body condition. Female condition affected neither silk investment in nuptial gift wrapping nor the quantity of sperm transferred by males. Finally, females in good body condition oviposited faster after copulation and laid more eggs than females in poor body condition. Conclusions We provide experimental evidence that males of a gift-giving spider exhibit positive differential allocation in three key aspects of their reproductive investment: the size of the nutritious gift, duration of pre-copulatory courtship, and duration of pedipalp insertions, which is regarded as a form of copulatory courtship in spiders. This positive differential allocation is likely associated with the benefits of copulating with females in good body condition. These females are more fecund and oviposit faster after copulation than females in poor body condition, which under natural field conditions probably reduces the risk of multiple matings and thus the level of sperm competition faced by the males. As a final remark, our findings indicate that the hypothesis of differential allocation also applies to species with a scramble competition mating system, in which males heavily invest in nuptial gift construction, but not in parental care.

The present paper examines the sources of disparities between Arabs and Jews and between residents of the periphery and residents of the urban center in the length of stay (LOS) in emergency departments (ED) in Israeli hospitals. Israel is a society where all residents are covered by National Health Insurance and have equal access to emergency medicine; thus, no disparities in emergency treatment are expected. Data were obtained from the 2015 “Survey of Satisfaction with Hospitalization in Emergency Medicine Departments” in Israel. The analysis reveals that LOS is considerably shorter for Arabs than for Jews and among residents of the periphery than residents of the urban center. After considering patterns of residential segregation (as well as socio-demographic attributes and indicators of the medical condition) and controlling for perceived waiting time (triage), the LOS disparity between Arabs and Jews vanishes. The findings lead to the conclusion that disparities in LOS in Israeli EDs do not stem from differential treatment by the medical staff but can be fully attributed to patterns of spatial segregation. Differential allocation of medical resources by the state to urban-center regions, compared to peripheral regions, seems to be the source of LOS disparities in emergency departments in Israeli hospitals.

Abstract Male secondary sexual traits potentially function as indicators of direct or indirect fitness benefits to females. Direct benefits, such as paternal care, may be especially important to females in species with biparental care. In an experimental field study of the golden rocket frog (Anomaloglossus beebei), a Neotropical species with biparental care, we tested predictions from four hypotheses proposed to explain the evolutionary relationship between male secondary sexual traits and paternal care quality (the “good parent,” “differential allocation,” “trade-off,” and “essential male care” hypotheses). We examined: 1) the influence of paternal care on offspring survival, 2) the relationships between male calls and paternal care, maternal care, and opportunities for males to acquire multiple mates, and 3) female preferences for three acoustic properties of male advertisement calls. Our results reveal that paternal care positively impacts offspring survival, that males producing longer calls also provide higher-quality paternal care in the form of greater egg attendance and territory defense, and that females prefer longer calls. Females did not discriminate among potential mates based on differences in dominant frequency or call rate. These findings, which suggest male advertisement calls are indicators of potential direct benefits to females in the form of paternal care, are consistent with the good parent hypothesis and inconsistent with the trade-off, differential allocation, and essential male care hypotheses.

Abstract Ten years ago, two reviews clarified the need to tie glucocorticoid (GC) levels directly to survival and reproductive measures. Three primary hypotheses emerged from that work: the CORT-Fitness hypothesis, the CORT-Adaptation hypothesis, and the CORT-Tradeoff hypothesis. The two reviews have since been cited nearly 900 times, but no clear consensus has emerged supporting one hypothesis over another. We propose that resource availability may be a major confound across studies. Life-history investment is determined by both allocation and acquisition, but current literature testing among the three GC-fitness hypotheses rarely incorporate metrics of resource availability. In 1986, van Noordwijk and de Jong (vN and dJ) proposed the acquisition/allocation Y-model to explain positive versus negative correlations between reproduction and survival across individuals. Their model elevated resources as critical to evaluating individual allocation strategies (favoring reproduction vs. survival), and therefore provides the ideal framework for testing across the three CORT hypotheses. Here, we review the three hypotheses in light of the last 10 years of data, introduce the vN and dJ framework as a model for fitness/GC hypothesis testing, and discuss best practices for using this framework. We believe incorporation of resource availability will reduce unexplained variability in GC-fitness tests, clarify support among the three hypotheses, and allow for greater power in testing across other context dependencies (e.g., life-history strategy) that likely regulate differential allocation to reproduction versus survival as GCs increase.
