The present study aims at seasonal and diurnal pollution potential at Gorakhpur in east Uttar Pradesh. To assess the pollution potential, meteorological data for five year period (1982-86) of Gorakhpur have been analyzed for four seasons viz; winter (December-February), summer (March-May), monsoon (June-September) and post monsoon (October-November). Season wise wind roses, stability, stability wind roses have been prepared and season wise diurnal variation of mixing height and ventilation coefficient have also been worked out. It is found that Gorakhpur has a better diffusion capacity in summer and poor in post monsoon followed by winter. Afternoon hours are better for vertical mixing. The winds are predominantly from southwest to west in all seasons except in monsoon when it blows from northeast to east. Based on this study, an appropriate location for industrialization has been suggested.

The present study aims at seasonal and diurnal pollution potential around Patna, the capital region of Bihar and Gaya. To assess the pollution potential, meteorological data of two stations, VIZ., Patna and the neighbouring station Gaya for five year period (1984-88) have been analysed; The analysis has been done for four representative seasonal months, viz., winter (January), pre-monsoon (April), monsoon (August) and post-monsoon (October).   The analysis shows no stable conditions in the day time and no unstable condition in the  night time in each month. April shows higher frequency and January the lowest frequencies of unstable conditions. April  has the highest mixing height and ventilation coefficient. From the results it has been concluded that day time is suitable for good dispersion in all the months. In the ca5e of existing industries, emission must be lessened during night time and particularly in the winter months. These results also suggest that pollutants are well dispersed in April and August. January and August may be regarded as the worst months for vertical diffusion of contaminants. As the predominant surface winds are easterly, any new Industrial set up should be in the west of the city in order to minimise the effects of pollutants.

Based on surface temperature, humidity and wind data collected from 77 points over a period of eight days in and around Madras using mobile surveys, the heat island characteristics at Madras have been assessed. The maximum heat island intensity is seen to be about 4°C. The humidity pattern apart from showing maritime influence also indicates a minimum over the heat pocket. The mixing height is found to be more over urban area than over rural area indicating lower pollution potential over the former due to the mixing over a larger depth than in the latter.

The Piyungan landfill is located in Bantul Regency, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, still uses an open dumping system. The open dumping system produced more quantity of leachate from other systems. Leachate spreads to the ground and seeps into the ground to the groundwater surface. These conditions have an impact on the environment. This study aims to assess the groundwater vulnerability to leachate contamination in the area around the Piyungan landfill. The research method used is survey and mapping, and data analysis is carried out using the Le Grand method. Geographic Information System (GIS) is also used to visualize data into maps. The Le Grand method considers as many as 5 physical environmental parameters, including the groundwater depth, absorption above ground, aquifer permeability, groundwater slope, and horizontal distance of wells with pollutant sources. Next, scoring is carried out for each of these parameters, and then a groundwater vulnerability map is made using the overlay method. The results of the study were three classes of the potential vulnerability of groundwater pollutions. That were large pollution potential (may or may be polluted), medium pollution potential (maybe polluted but slightly), and small pollution potential (very difficult to pollute).

This study evaluates the depuration efficiency of a combined system consisting of lagoons (with aerated and non-aerated tanks) and CWs (with Typha latifolia L.) working at pilot scale for treating SW under two recirculation rates (RRs, 4:1 and 10:1) of the CW effluent. The combined system removed about 99% of the total suspended solids and organic matter, and from 80% to 95% of the total nitrogen at both tested RRs. The lagoon system was effective as a pre-treatment of SW, particularly for nitrogen removal. It is convenient to adopt the higher RR, since nitrogen removal can be increased by approximately 20%. The irrigation of the CWs with SW did not generally determine the phyto-toxic effects on Typha latifolia L., except at the start of the experiment and under the lower RR. Despite the limited spatial and temporal scale of this investigation, these results provide a starting point for the use of V-SSF CWs to treat livestock wastewater with a high pollution potential (such as SW).

The alcohol industry discharges large quantities of wastewater, which is hazardous and has a considerable pollution potential. Cultivating microalgae in wastewater is an alternative way of overcoming the current high cost of microalgae cultivation and an environmentally friendly treatment method for industrial effluents. The study analyzed the growth and biochemical composition of Chlorella vulgaris cultivated in membrane-treated distillery wastewater (MTDW) and nutrients removal efficiency. The results showed biomass productivity of 0.04 g L−1 d−1 for MTDW with the contents of content of protein, carbohydrate, and lipid at 49.6 ± 1.4%, 26.1 ± 0.6%, and 10.4 ± 1.8%, respectively. The removal efficiencies of TN, TP, and COD were 80, 94, and 72.24% in MTDW, respectively. In addition, removal efficiencies of 100, 85.37, and 42.86% for Ca2+, Mg2+, and Mo2− were achieved, respectively. The study added to our growing knowledge on the cultivation of Chlorella with wastewater, suggesting that it was feasible to cultivate Chlorella with MTDW and represented an economical and environmentally friendly strategy for microalgae biomass production and reuse of wastewater resources.

The technical feasibility of valorizing tequila vinasse (TV), a wastewater with high pollution potential, through the production of biogenic hydrogen via dark fermentation, has long been proven in diverse lab-scale reactors that were operated either in batch or continuous mode. However, such systems have mainly been tested with diluted streams and nutrient supplementation, hindering the techno-economic attractiveness of the TV-to-hydrogen concept at large scale. In this study, the feasibility of producing hydrogen from high-strength undiluted TV with no added extra nutrients was evaluated under batch mesophilic conditions. Additionally, the use of two different acidogenic inocula obtained either by heat or heat-aeration pretreatment was investigated to get a greater understanding of the effect of inoculum type on the process. The results obtained showed that the TV utilized herein contained macro- and micro-nutrients high enough to support the hydrogenogenic activity of both cultures, entailing average hydrogen yields of 2.4–2.6 NL H2/L vinasse and maximum hydrogen production rates of 1.4–1.9 NL H2/L-d. Interestingly, the consumption of lactate and acetate with the concomitant production of butyrate was observed as the main hydrogen-producing route regardless of the inoculum, pointing out the relevance of the lactate-driven dark fermentative process. Clostridium beijerinckii was ascertained as key bacteria, but only in association with microorganisms belonging to the genera Enterobacter and Klebsiella, as revealed by phylogenetic analyses.
