The cryosphere is able to provide a variety of services for the benefit of human well-being and underpins regional sustainable development. The cryosphere deterioration induced by climate change is impacting the services and will subsequently impede the efforts to meet sustainable development goals (SDGs) in high mountain societies. Here, we detail the context of cryosphere services and establish a dataset for its linkage to SDGs. This allows us to uncover its roles in supporting SDGs, directly by a causal connection and indirectly through either cascading effects or interconnection among SDGs. We find that the SDGs in association with the basic needs of high mountain societies are mostly affected by the cryosphere services. The different types of services pitch in with distinctions to be embraced by various SDGs, whilst some play a prominent role in the contribution to a broad range of SDGs. We further investigate how the services behave in their contributions to SDGs, by taking a view via the lens of a network that deciphers the relationship between the services and SDG targets as well as the interconnections among SDG targets. With an insight into the centrality and modularity of services in the network, we then delineate the inherent criticality of services to SDG targets as a whole, and reveal the specificity of services that co-contribute to a cluster of SDG targets in each network community. We take out the services from the network and maintain their interlinks to the targets of each underlying SDG system represented in six key entry points, so that the services critical to the transformation pathways in the entry points for SDGs in high mountains can be identified. Finally, we discuss the trade-offs that can occur in high mountains, which is unique for the cryosphere services. It creates more complexity in the assessment of overall benefits that the cryosphere services may provide to SDGs, and urges the balance that has to be maintained in attaining those services for the transformation.

Precipitation has been suggested as a crucial influencing factor in the primary productivity in arid and semi-arid regions, yet how moisture fluctuation in an arid mountain-basin system of the north Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau has affected human activities is poorly understood. Here, we reconstruct the variations of grazing intensity in high elevations and regional humidity based on independent and high-resolution records of Sporormiella-type coprophilous fungal spores and pollen grains in the same well-dated sediment core from Lake Tian’E in the western Qilian Mountains over the past 3500 years. We find that stronger grazing activity was associated with low regional effective moisture, and propose that the drier regional climate pushed people and their livestock into the mountainous areas. A notable exception was a reduction of human and grazing activities in arid region with high mountains during 380–580 CE caused by centennial-length dry and cold conditions. In addition, it is also noteworthy that intensified grazing activity occurred during 580–720 CE and after ∼1920 CE, corresponding to a warmer and wetter climate and diverse subsistence strategies with social developments in the lowlands of the Hexi Corridor. Our findings potentially provide a historical reference for understanding how ancient people adapted to the climate change in arid region with high mountains.

Abstract A robust understanding of the sub-seasonal cold season (November–March) precipitation variability over the High Mountains of Asia (HMA) is currently lacking. Here, we identify dynamic and thermodynamic pathways through which natural modes of climate variability establish their teleconnections over the HMA. First, we identify evaporative sources that contribute to the cold season precipitation over the HMA and surroundings areas. The predominant moisture contribution comes from the mid-latitude regions including Mediterranean/Caspian Seas and Mediterranean land. Second, we establish that several tropical and extratropical forcing display a sub-seasonally fluctuating influence on the cold season precipitation distribution over the region, and given that many of them varyingly interact with each other, their impacts cannot be explained exclusively or at seasonal timescales. Lastly, a single set of evaporative sources cannot always be identified as the only determinant in propagating a remote teleconnection, because nature of moisture anomalies and its sources depend on the pattern of sub-seasonally varying dynamical forcing in the atmosphere.

Abstract. Perennial snow patches are considered as indicators of permafrost occurence. There are no large glaciers on the territory of Bulgaria but small patches of snow and firn have been observed in the high mountains in the end of the summer. Perennial snow patches are considered as indicators of permafrost occurrence. In this paper we present results from geophysical investigations of Snezhnika microglacier situated in the Golyam Kazan cirque, Pirin Mountain, Bulgaria. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and 2D Electro Resistivity Tomography (ERT) were used to estimate the thickness of the perennial snow patch as well as its subsurface structure. Measurements started in 2018 and continued over the next three years in order to evaluate changes in the snow patches' size and thickness. The mean thickness of Snezhnika is about 4–6 m, reaching up to 8 m in some areas. ERT measurements of the deeper parts of the microglacier beds show high electrical resistivities reaching over 60000 Ωm at a depth of 4–10 m. An anomaly at this depth is likewise distinguishable on the GPR profiles. These anomalies are interpreted as frozen zones and are consistently observed on the ERT and GPR profiles in the next two years of the study. These results imply for the first time the existence of permafrost in Pirin mountain and respectively in Bulgaria.

Cypriconcha hypsophila n. sp. is described and illustrated from high-altitude freshwater bodies within the Argentine province of Catamarca, which represents the first record of this genus in South America. This paper also presents a taxonomical key for identification of all species within the genus. Some comments concerning how this particular species could have spread from the high mountains from the Nearctic region to those of the northwestern Andes are provided.

 The diversity of small, medium, and large solution features of zonal karsts and high mountain karsts is described here. It was taken into consideration how diversity changes according to the distance from the Equator in case of small, medium and large features of various zonal karsts and how it varies based on the distance from altitude in case of the karren features (small features) of high mountain karsts. It can be established that the diversity of karst features decreases according to the distance from the Equator (independent of the size of the features), while in high mountains the diversity of karren features first increases with altitude and then it decreases. The decrease of the diversity of medium and large features moving away from the Equator can be explained by the decrease of dissolution in­tensity. The diversity change of karren features shows a rela­tion with the diversity of the inclination of the bearing slope. Since on tropical karsts and in the medium elevated areas of high mountains (1600-2100 m) where bare slopes with large expansion and various slope inclination occur, the diversity of karren is great. On tropical karsts, slopes with diverse inclina­tion were created by karstification and in high mountains by glacial erosion.

A list of 101 species of hoverflies recorded from three high altitudinal belts in the Eastern Sayan mountain region is given. Most species belong to the subfamilies Syrphinae (60 species) and Eristalinae (38 species), while Pipizinae and Microdontinae are presented by two and one species, respectively. Totally, 96 species were found in the forest zone, 37 species were found in the mountain tundra and only Platycheirus chilosia has been caught in the golsty belt. New synonymy is established: Melangyna arctica (Zetterstedt, 1838) = Melangyna soszynskii Mielczarek, 2013 syn. n., = Melangyna tsherepanovi (Violovitsh, 1965) syn. n.

AbstractNumerical climate models have been upgraded by the improved description of terrestrial hydrological processes across different scales. The goal of this study is to explore the role of terrestrial hydrological processes on land–atmosphere interactions within the context of modeling uncertainties related to model physics parameterization. The models applied are the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and its coupled hydrological modeling system WRF-Hydro, which depicts the lateral terrestrial hydrological processes and further allows their feedback to the atmosphere. We conducted convection-permitting simulations (3 km) over the Heihe River Basin in Northwest China for the period 2008–2010, and particularly focused on its upper reach area of complex high mountains. In order to account for the modeling uncertainties associated with model physics parameterization, an ensemble of simulations is generated by varying the planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes. We embedded the fully three-dimensional atmospheric water tagging method in both WRF and WRF-Hydro for quantifying the strength of land–atmosphere interactions. The impact of PBL parameterization on land–atmosphere interactions is evaluated through its direct effect on vertical mixing. Results suggest that enabled lateral terrestrial flow in WRF-Hydro distinctly increases soil moisture and evapotranspiration near the surface in the high mountains, thereby modifies the atmospheric condition regardless of the applied PBL scheme. The local precipitation recycling ratio in the study area increases from 1.52 to 1.9% due to the description of lateral terrestrial flow, and such positive feedback processes are irrespective of the modeling variability caused by PBL parameterizations. This study highlights the non-negligible contribution of lateral terrestrial flow to local precipitation recycling, indicating the potential of the fully coupled modeling in land–atmosphere interactions research.

The pathophysiological features of the development of maladjustment under mountain-cold conditions as a manifestation of the syndrome of mutual burdening are considered. In this study, contents of various literary sources, characterizing a persons resistance to the effects of a complex of factors under high mountains and polar zones conditions, were analyzed. With the simultaneous exposure to hypoxia and hypothermia from a pathophysiological point of view, intersecting links of terminological paths, often having diametrically opposite dynamics of changes in the characterized concepts, will be significant. Thus, in the terminological mitochondrial pathway of energy metabolism, uncoupling proteins are present, which, to increase the resistance to hypothermia, should be activated to switch the energy metabolism to predominantly use fatty acids. However, hypoxic conditions should be suppressed to maintain the level of adenosine triphosphate acid available for cells. In the terminological tract of compensatory reactions in response to hypoxemia, the volume of pulmonary ventilation is released, which must increase to improve tolerance to hypoxia, which, under mountain-cold conditions, increased heat loss and promote the deterioration of the condition, i.e., tolerance to low temperatures. Under hypoxic and hypothermic conditions, a synergistic interaction can form, which can be manifested by the development of a syndrome of mutual burdening, which will result in a significant decrease in the functional capabilities of the body, result, and productivity. Maladjustment to mountain cold, with maximum probability, will manifest as disorders of the central nervous system, decreased physical performance, depletion of the functional and regulatory reserves of the body, functional immunodeficiency, decreased regenerative potential, and development of endogenous intoxication. With a high degree of probability, a significant synergistic interaction of hypoxia and hypothermia can be found in relation to the indicators of pulmonary ventilation, blood gases (hypercapnia), acidbase balance (gas alkalosis and lactic acidosis), heart rate (tachycardia), blood pressure (hypotension), central venous pressure (increase), blood viscosity (increase) and its coagulability (hypercoagulation), peroxide and free radical oxidation (activation), and protein catabolism (increase). These changes will negatively affect the functional state of specialists performing complex professional tasks in polar latitudes.

In the summer of 2020, tensions rose at sxxnitk, an ancestral fishing village site, for the Syilx Okanagan Peoples due to a landowner seeking to exclude access to a portion of qawsitk (Okanagan) river. Access to sxxnitk is integral for Syilx Nation building and realizing embodied relationships with the Salmon peoples, which have been hindered by a multiplicity of factors that almost removed salmon completely from the Territory. Sensory access throughout the village site is not only important to rebuild relations with the salmon, but also those with the place itself. sxxnitk remains a portal of relationality with waterscapes from the high mountains into the Pacific Ocean. Waterscapes connect peoples, polities and humans/more-than-humans throughout their spaces of motion. In an era of altered river pathways, intensified relationships grounded in particular waterscapes can help to build relations beyond the structural blockages that fragment the flow of the river and its ecologies. These relationships are important for collaborative healing throughout the watershed. Renewing relations with ecologies of flow and motion bring to question the fragmented jurisdictions that seek to carve up Indigenous territories.
