This article intends to argue that the movement of students through the Brazilian mandatory school only acquires signs of an educational political problem from the 1930’s on. It indicates that the current sense of the notion of student failure came to be defined only in the twentieth century, although it was possible to fail students since before. It intends to show further that, in articulation with political and cultural changes in education – such as the emergence of compulsory school, the definition of grade-based model of school, and the primacy of homogeneity of classes – the emergence of better and systematic statistics after 1931 contributed decisively in defining the conditions for the possibility of inclusion of student failure as a problem on the political agenda.

The fostering of empathy among primary school students is an important goal because it enhances the improvement of behavior and the development of positive social contacts. Empathy can contribute to understanding and supporting others’ needs. In most cases, empathy in young children is developed through listening to sad stories, experienced first-hand by others. In the educational scenario presented in this article, the dramatic effects of climate change were conveyed to the pupils through a message said to originate from the future, delivered by an educational robot. The message was expressed by a peer living in Iran in 2050. In addition to delivering the message, the robot called on children to prevent climate change from rapidly worsening by changing their own way of thinking and attitudes. Thus, students called upon a formulated educational problem to understand and handle through their own emotional and cognitive performance through the robot’s storytelling. This performance was intensely affected by empathy towards the Iranian peer’s difficult personal living conditions. The research focused on measuring the evidence of empathy development. Additionally, the design and implementation aspects of the robot are presented, utilizing the implemented teaching intervention as means of demonstrating the innovative nature of the robot.

Background: The inappropriate use of pamphlets rather than textbooks is an educational problem faced by most students. Note-taking and reading pamphlets rather than reading textbooks regardless of defects and shortcomings with their own structure cannot cover the required materials for students. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the status of the textbooks used by the dentistry students of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences (KUMS), Iran. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted on the students of the dentistry school of KUMS. In total, 148 students were selected via random sampling. Data were collected using a valid and reliable questionnaire. Data analysis was performed in SPSS version 18. Results: In total, 67.6% of the students used the content presented by professors in the class, and only 2% used the original English textbooks of dentistry. The analysis of the priorities of the type of resource indicated that the highest frequency belonged to the use of printed pamphlets (55.4%), and the lowest frequency belonged to the use of printed versions and electronic audio files (0.7%). Additionally, evaluation of access to resources showed the maximum frequency of a group pamphlet to be 35.8%, while the lowest frequency belonged to the pamphlet prepared by others (2.7%). Conclusions: According to the results, the students showed great interest in note-taking and reading pamphlets rather than reading textbooks. The insufficient fluency of students in English, high costs of reference books, and a large amount of resources made the students more likely to use pamphlets.

The proposed article addresses to an important educational problem – the development of cognitive independence of pupils and students. This problem has always been relevant, which numerous pedagogical studies tell. It is the fact that the development of scientific and technological progress is constantly making new demands on the education branch, the solution of which largely depends on the willingness of young people to learn. The urgency of this problem has become more acute due to the need of distance learning, in which success in learning depends largely on the pupils or student’s cognitive independence. The transition to distance learning prompted the authors to analyze the structural components of cognitive independence from the standpoint of increased independence of pupils and students in quarantine period and to find out the points needed attention in the future in order to more successfully solve this problem. According to the authors’ opinion, the improvement of cognitive independence of youth is carried out through their broad involvement in cognitive independent activity, during which mental effort will be applied, along with existing knowledge and skills, willpower and feelings, thus, the experience of cognitive independence will be more persistently formed. Skills and experience of cognitive independence cannot be conveyed in words, stories or examples. It is formed and developed in the process of active learning under the guidance of experienced teachers. The driving force is the interest in knowledge. In order to develop cognitive independence, the authors propose to use more active teaching methods, involve pupils and students in creative projects, technical creativity, research, writing essays, solving tasks and problems, the use of telecommunications information technology and more. Key words: individual work, cognitive independence, cognitive activity, creative activity, problem-based learning, problem solving.

This study describes the issue of maladaptive daydreaming. This phenomenon is becoming a contemporary educational problem because it limits the development potential of children and adolescents as well as their interpersonal relations. The field of possible understanding of maladaptive daydreamingin relation to terms related in meaning was outlined, as well as the current attempts at its scientific conceptualization. In my analysis, I go beyond the dualistic understanding of the children’s real and imaginary world, referring to the cultural-historical theory of the development of creative imagination as a higher mental function as an internalized system of social relations. From this perspective, the phenomenon of daydreaming in children and adolescents, in relation to reality, is not treated in a dichotomous way, but as a social development situation.
