Agricultural yield of major crops is low due to the injudicious use of chemical fertilizers that affects soil fertility and biodiversity severely and thereby affecting plant growth. Soil health is regulated by various factors such as physicochemical properties of the soil, availability of micro/macronutrients, soil health indicator enzymes and microbial diversity which are essential for agriculture productivity. Thus, it is required to draw attention towards an eco-friendly approach that protects the beneficial microbial population of soil. Application of different bioinoculants and agriusable nanocompounds has been reported to enhance soil quality with increased nutrient status and beneficial bacterial population, but additive effects of combined treatments on soil microbial population are largely unknown. The present study investigated the impact of nanozeolite and nanochitosan along with two Bacillus spp. on rhizospheric microbial flora and indicator enzymes to signify soil health under field conditions on maize. Soil health was ascertained by evaluating physicochemical analysis; total bacterial counts including N, P, and K solubilizing bacteria; and soil health indicator enzymes like fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis, alkaline phosphatase, β-glucosidase, dehydrogenase, amylase, and arylesterase. Change in copy number of 16S rRNA as a marker gene was used to quantify the bacterial population using quantitative PCR (qPCR) in different treatments. Our study revealed that nanocompounds with Bacillus spp. significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced total microbial count (16.89%), NPK solubilizing bacteria (46%, 41.37%, and 57.14%), and the level of soil health indicator enzymes up to twofold over control after 20, 40, and 60 days of the experiment. qPCR analysis showed a higher copy number of the 16S rRNA gene in treated samples, which also indicates a positive impact on soil bacterial population. This study presents a valuable approach to improve soil quality in combined treatments of nanocompounds and bioinoculants which can be used as a good alternative to chemical fertilizers for sustainable agriculture.

The sensory, volatile, and physiochemical profiles of nineteen commercial non-alcoholic pilsner-style beers produced by different production techniques were analyzed and compared with a dry-hopped non-alcoholic IPA. NABs made only with either physical dealcoholization or restricted fermentations differed significantly in chemistry and flavor. Generally, NABs produced by restricted fermentations were the most worty, thick, and sweet, whereas NABs that were physically dealcoholized had the lowest taste/aroma intensities and were the sourest, most thin, and least sweet. Interestingly, the method of dealcoholization had a minor impact on the flavor profile. The use of maltose intolerant yeast as well as the implementation of combined treatments, such as blending dealcoholized beer with beer containing alcohol, were the techniques found to produce NABs with more harmonious and multifaceted chemical and flavor profiles. NABs with increased hop aroma volatiles were the most harmonious, particularly highlighted by the NA IPA reference. Even though dry-hopped character might be atypical for pilsner-style beer, dry-hopping appears as a simple application to produce NABs with more harmonious flavor.

Abstract Seminiferous propagation of Dietes bicolor is hindered by the probable physical and/or morphophysiological dormancy. The objective was to analyze the efficacy of different methods of overcoming dormancy in D. bicolor seeds to determine a possible pre-germination treatment for the species. Two experiments were conducted: (I) Evaluation of the breaking of physical dormancy, in which the treatments of mechanical scarification were carried using sandpaper #100; chemical scarification with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) for 5 and 10 minutes and immersion in hot water (70 ºC), also, for 5 and 10 minutes, were evaluated. The intact seed was considered a control. (II) Evaluation of morphophysiological dormancy, in which the seeds were submitted to combined treatments of stratification of hot temperature (20-35 °C) and/or cold temperature (9 ºC), distributed in periods of 0, 1, and 2 weeks, totalizing 9 treatments. In both experiments, germination percentage (G), germination speed index (GSI), and first count (FC) were determined, using a randomized block design, and evaluated by the Scott-Knott test at 1% and Dunnett’s test at 5%. The use of H2SO4 10 minutes induced 42% germination, 0.52 GSI, and 18% FC, but only FC was significantly different from the control. In the second trial, the treatment that spent only two weeks in hot temperatures (20-35 ºC) showed the highest germination (30%), compared to the control (G = 22%). These results provide relevant information for understanding the physiology of D. bicolor germination, in addition to contributing to the optimization of pre-germination practices for this important ornamental species.

Abstract As two typical tetracyclines, chlortetracycline (CTC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) coexist widely in water. In the experiment, Myriophyllum aquaticum (Vell.) Verdc was exposed to the orthogonal hydroponic environment with the concentrations of CTC and OTC at 1, 10, and 50 mg/L for 7 days (7 D) and 14 days (14 D). The results showed that the plant height, relative growth rates (RGR), and photosynthetic pigment contents of M. aquaticum decreased significantly after 14 D of CTC/ OTC, which was stronger than that after 7 D, and the toxicity of CTC was stronger than OTC. The combined toxicity of the two on the RGR and total chlorophyll content was mainly synergistic or additive after 7 D. After 14 D, the interaction changed to antagonism or addition, and the response of total chlorophyll content was more obvious than that of RGR. After 7 D of combined treatments, the malondialdehyde (MDA) content decreased significantly, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) activities responded to different combined concentrations, respectively, and CAT was the main protective enzyme of M. aquaticum. After 14 D of combined treatments, the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content increased significantly, the MDA content increased first and then decreased, and POD was the main protective enzyme among the three antioxidant enzymes. Overall, this study provided the first insight into the single and combined toxicity of CTC and OTC on the growth and physiology of M. aquaticum at different time periods, revealing the reversal of the combined toxicity with time of exposure.

Abstract Combined treatments were designed based on iron-carbon micro-electrolysis treatment (ICME), physical adsorption (PA) with zeolite (Z) or vermiculite (V) and microalgae cultivation (MC, C. vulgaris) for removing pollutants from swine wastewater (SW), herein are ICME + MC (IM), ICME + Z + MC (IZM) and ICME + V + MC (IVM). Results showed that the minimum total nitrogen (TN) of 43.66 mg L−1, NH4+-N of 1.33 mg−1 and total phosphorus (TP) of 0.14 mg−1 were obtained by IVM, while the minimum chemical oxygen demand (COD) was 105 mg−1 via IM. During the process of combined treatments, ICME contributed most to the removal of TN (84.52% by IZM), TP (97.78% by IVM and IZM) and COD (62.44% by IVM), and maximum NH4+-N removal (55.64%) was obtained by MC procedure in IM process. Vermiculite performed better than zeolite during all the combined treatments. Besides, the maximum cell dry weight (CDW, 0.74 g−1) of C. vulgaris was obtained by IM on day 13. The results provide an efficient integrated method for swine wastewater treatment.

The study was aimed to control nematodes in ginger crop in a sustainable way through inoculation of bio-agent, Trichoderma viride. The outcome of our research revealed that Trichoderma viride alone (T2) was the most effective treatment among all. This bio-agent has lowered the root-knot nematode populations by suppressing the disease intensity and responsible for enhancement of plant growth, increases the availability of nutrients to host plant. Meloidogyne incognita alone (T1) infected rhizomes resulted in highest reduction of calcium content amounting 2.26 and 2.43 mg/100g dry weight whereas maximum content was recorded in Trichoderma viride alone (T2) inoculated rhizomes as 2.84 and 3.08 mg 100g-1 dry weight in suravi and suprabha over control (T7) respectively. Trichoderma viride inoculated 15 days prior to Meloidogyne incognita (TV→MI) was found to be most efficient one among all combined treatments. Susceptibility towards nematode induced more nutrient deposition in rhizomes of ginger crop due to poor translocation process through xylem.

Recently, application of high-pressure homogenization (HPH) treatments has been widely studied to improve shelf life and rheological and functional properties of vegetable and fruit juices. Another approach that has drawn the attention of researchers is the use of biocontrol cultures. Nevertheless, no data on their possible combined effect on fruit juices shelf life and functionality have been published yet. In this work, the microbial, organoleptic, and technological stability of extremely perishable carrot juice and its functionality were monitored for 12 and 7 days (stored at 4 and 10 °C, respectively) upon HPH treatment alone or in combination with a fermentation step using the biocontrol agent L. lactis LBG2. HPH treatment at 150 MPa for three passes followed by fermentation with L. lactis LBG2 extended the microbiological shelf life of the products of at least three and seven days when stored at 10 °C and 4 °C, respectively, compared to untreated or only HPH-treated samples. Moreover, the combined treatments determined a higher stability of pH and color values, and a better retention of β-carotene and lutein throughout the shelf-life period when compared to unfermented samples. Eventually, use of combined HPH and LBG2 resulted in the production of compounds having positive sensory impact on carrot juice.
