Abstract Hierarchical Chinese postman problem (HCPP), a variant of the Chinese postman problem, aims to find the shortest tour or tours by passing through the arcs classified according to precedence relationship. HCPP, which has a wide application area in real-life problems such as shovel snow and routing patrol vehicles where precedence relations are important, belongs to the NP-hard problem class. In real-life problems, travel time between the two locations in city traffic varies due to reasons such as traffic jam, weather conditions, etc. Therefore travel times are uncertain. In this study, HCPP is handled with the chance-constrained stochastic programming approach, and a new type of problem, hierarchical Chinese postman problem with stochastic travel times, is introduced. Due to the NP-hard nature of the problem, the developed mathematical model with stochastic parameter values cannot find proper solutions in large size problems within the appropriate time interval. Therefore, two new solution approaches, a heuristic method based on the Greedy Search (GSA) algorithm and a meta-heuristic method based on ant colony optimization (ACO) are proposed in this study. These new algorithms were tested on modified benchmark instances and randomly generated problem instances with as many as 817 edges. The performance of algorithms was compared in terms of solution quality and computational time.

Text classification is a fundamental language task in Natural Language Processing. A variety of sequential models are capable of making good predictions, yet there is a lack of connection between language semantics and prediction results. This paper proposes a novel influence score (I-score), a greedy search algorithm, called Backward Dropping Algorithm (BDA), and a novel feature engineering technique called the “dagger technique”. First, the paper proposes to use the novel influence score (I-score) to detect and search for the important language semantics in text documents that are useful for making good predictions in text classification tasks. Next, a greedy search algorithm, called the Backward Dropping Algorithm, is proposed to handle long-term dependencies in the dataset. Moreover, the paper proposes a novel engineering technique called the “dagger technique” that fully preserves the relationship between the explanatory variable and the response variable. The proposed techniques can be further generalized into any feed-forward Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), and any neural network. A real-world application on the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) is used and the proposed methods are applied to improve prediction performance with an 81% error reduction compared to other popular peers if I-score and “dagger technique” are not implemented.

Collaborative beamforming (CB) enables uplink transmission in a wireless sensor network (WSN) composed of sensors (nodes) and far-away access points (APs). It can also be applied to the case where the sensors are equipped with beam-switching structures (BSSs). However, as the antenna arrays of the BSSs are randomly headed due to the irregular mounting surface, some sensors form beams that do not illuminate a desired AP and waste their limited energy. Therefore, to resolve this problem, it is required to switch the beams toward the desired AP. While an exhaustive search can provide the globally optimal combination, a greedy search (GS) is utilized to solve this optimization problem efficiently. Simulation and experimental results verify that under certain conditions the proposed algorithm can drive the sensors to switch their beams properly and increase the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) significantly with low computational complexity and energy consumption.
