Carnitine deficiency is prevalent in patients undergoing hemodialysis, and it could result in lowered muscle strength. So far, the effect of treatment with levocarnitine on lower limb muscle strength has not been well described. This observational study examined the association between treatment with levocarnitine with the change in knee extensor strength (KES) in hemodialysis patients. Eligible patients were selected from the participants enrolled in a prospective cohort study for whom muscle strength was measured annually. We identified 104 eligible patients for this analysis. During the one-year period between 2014 to 2015, 67 patients were treated with intravenous levocarnitine (1000 mg per shot, thrice weekly), whereas 37 patients were not. The change in KES was significantly higher (p = 0.01) in the carnitine group [0.02 (0.01–0.04) kgf/kg] as compared to the non-carnitine group [−0.02 (−0.04 to 0.01) kgf/kg]. Multivariable-adjusted regression analysis showed the positive association between the change in KES and the treatment with levocarnitine remained significant after adjustment for the baseline KES and other potential confounders. Thus, treatment with intravenous levocarnitine was independently and positively associated with the change in KES among hemodialysis patients. Further clinical trials are needed to provide more solid evidence.

Abstract Background Parkinson’s disease remains orphan of valuable therapies capable to interfere with the disease pathogenesis despite the large number of symptomatic approaches adopted in clinical practice to manage this disease. Treatments simultaneously affecting α-synuclein (α-syn) oligomerization and neuroinflammation may counteract Parkinson’s disease. Recent data demonstrated that Doxycycline an antibiotic of the tetracycline class, can inhibit α-syn aggregation and exert anti-inflammatory activity. We herein investigate, for the first time, the potential therapeutic properties of Doxy in a human α-syn A53T transgenic Parkinson’s disease mouse model by the evaluation of behavioural, biochemical and histopathological parameters. Methods human α-syn A53T transgenic mice were treated with Doxycycline (10 mg/Kg daily ip) for 30 days, the effect of treatment on motor and cognitive behaviour impairment and daily live activity of mice were examined, successively immunocytochemical, electrophysiological and biochemical analysis of cerebral tissue was performed. Results Doxy treatment abolished cognitive and daily life activity deficiencies in A53T mice. The effect on cognitive functions was associated with neuroprotection, inhibition of α-syn oligomerization and gliosis both in the cortex and hippocampus. Doxy treatment restored hippocampal long-term potentiation in association with inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines expression. Moreover, Doxy ameliorated motor impairment and reduced striatal glial activation in A53T mice. Conclusions Our findings promote Doxy as a valuable multi-target therapeutic approach counteracting both symptoms and neuropathology in the complex scenario of α-synucleinopathies

The aim of the study was to analyze and summarize available literature data on the role of autophagy in thyroid cancer. Material and methods. We analyzed 34 publications available from pubmed and elibrary. Ru databases concerning thyroid cancer and autophagy. Results. The review discussed the role of autophagy in the progression of thyroid cancer. The development of autophagy-targeted therapy was shown can improve treatment for thyroid cancer. Differentiated thyroid cancer (dtc) is the most common endocrine malignancy. Treatment of dtc patients who are resistant to radioactive iodine therapy is a major challenge. Molecular targeted therapy using tyrosine kinase inhibitors significantly improves treatment outcomes. Conclusion. To enhance the therapeutic effect of treatment with multi-target tyrosine kinase inhibitors, as well as to overcome drug resistance, it is necessary to study the role of autophagy in the development and progression of thyroid cancer.

Background. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed and life-threatening cancer in women worldwide. Since the disease diagnosis and treatment have improved greatly over time, quality of life has become an important outcome measure in breast cancer clinical investigations. The goal of the study was to analyze quality of life in women with breast cancer and to conduct a meta-analysis of data indicating the need for psychological support aimed at improving the quality of life in breast cancer patients. Material and methods. The study involved 186 women who were diagnosed with breast cancer no earlier than 6 months from the date of the survey. All patients had a luminal type of tumor. To study the quality of life of women with breast cancer, the sf-36 (36-item short-Form Health survey) questionnaire recommended by the international protocol was used. Results. Comparative analysis of standardized indicators of the quality of life indicats that the quality of life of women with breast cancer is significantly lower than that of women from the population (p<0.05). This result requires attention from both social/psychological services and physicians, due to the fact that the general indicator of the quality of life is associated with the prognosis of survival. The essence of providing psychological support to women with breast cancer is not only to alleviate their moral and psychological suffering, but also to enhance the effect of treatment and, as a result, increase survival. The authors come to the conclusion that it is necessary to include psychological rehabilitation programs in the protocol for treating women with breast cancer to enhance the effect of treatment, improve the quality of life.

Background: Timely feeding of adequate colostrum to new born calf is important to ensure transfer of passive immunity to prevent several infections. Present study has evaluated effect of time and amount of colostrum feeding on physiological parameters and health scores in Surti buffalo calves. Methods: Based on amount and time of feeding colostrum after birth, 24 Surti buffalo calves were divided into four groups as T1 (7%; 0-4), T2 (7%; 4-8), T3 (10%; 0-4) and T4 (10%; 4-8). Physiological parameters (twice daily upto day 5) and naval, nasal, eye and faecal scores on day 1, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 were recorded. Lying behavior was recorded on day 2. Result: Significant (p less than 0.05) interaction between treatment and weeks and nonsignificant effect of treatment was observed. Calves that received colostrum late had significantly (p less than 0.05) higher faecal score as well as evening heart and respiration rate. Calves that received colostrum early had significant (p less than 0.05) higher lying time. Normal scores of naval, nasal, eye and faecal indicated good health of calves. It was concluded that early feeding of colostrum @ 7 or 10% body weight within 4 hours after birth is beneficial for optimum health in buffalo calves.

Extragenital diseases make a great effect on the complicated course of pregnancy and childbirth. The lack of pregravidar preparation and somatic diagnostics lead to miscarriage, preeclampsia, and placental disorders. Therefore, the development of various algorithms for the management of pregnant women suffering from diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and the safe correction of various gastroduodenal symptoms, which is sometimes characteristic of the gestation period, are relevant. The purpose of the study: evaluation and critical analysis of modern data in the field of diagnosis and safe correction of various gastroduodenal symptoms during pregnancy. Materials and methods. Collection of modern Russian and foreign literature sources on the correction of gastroduodenal pathology during pregnancy, generalization and critical analysis of this problem. Results. Heartburn, constipation, flatulence are the most common complaints during pregnancy. The causes of their occurrence are physiological features during gestation, aimed at the most favorable gestation of the fetus. The first-line preparations are alginates created on the basis of alginic acid of brown alga. Antacids have a number of disadvantages. Proton pump inhibitors are prescribed extremely rarely and cautiously during pregnancy. In case of constipation in pregnant women, it is recommended to prescribe lactulose preparations together with defoamers. Prebiotics perfectly regulate the work of the intestine. The etiology, mechanisms of occurrence, clinical symptoms, differential diagnosis and treatment of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnant women were analyzed. Its possible prognoses and risks for the mother and fetus, the possibilities of diagnosis and correction are determined. Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract in pregnant women cause difficulties in diagnosis and treatment. For the most optimal course of pregnancy, there are sufficiently effective gastroenterological drugs recommended so that the effect of treatment is maximized and the side effect is minimized.

More and more attention is paid to the development of technologies using iron nanoparticles in agriculture. In this regard, the effect of treatment of wheat seeds with various concentrations of iron nanoparticles Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 on the accumulation of biomass, the rate of photosynthesis and respiration, as well as on photochemical activity and antioxidant balance was studied. The seeds were treated for 3 h, germinated for 2 days in Petri dishes, transplanted into sand and grown under light for 18 days without mineral nutrition until the third leaf appeared. At a Fe3O4 concentration of 200 mg L-1 a significant increase in the dry biomass of the second leaf by 45% and the rate of photosynthesis by 16% was observed. At a concentration of nanoparticles in the form of Fe2O3 of 200 and 500 mg L-1, an increase in the rate of photosynthesis in the second leaf was also observed, but not in the biomass of the leaves. The activity of photosystem 2, estimated from the Fv/Fm value, also increased in experiments with nanoiron. However, the activity of antioxidant enzymes, guaiacol-dependent peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, decreased. It is assumed that the acceleration of growth at an early stage of wheat development is associated with an increase in photosynthetic processes.
