Fisheries in the Curonian Lagoon (1584 km2 coastal lagoon in South-east Baltic) can be classified as artisanal, small-scale, multi-species, and multi-gear. Such types of fisheries are characterised as data-poor and require appropriate investigation methods. We used CMSY (version CMSY_2019_9f. R) to assess maximum sustainable yield (MSY) and related indicators for freshwater bream, roach, pike-perch, and European perch. A decline in pike-perch and roach was identified, while the stocks of freshwater bream and European perch were sustained. As the CMSY model does not consider the impact of environmental factors, the decline in roach stock may be attributed to the increase in salinity rather than to overfishing. In the case of freshwater bream and pike-perch, the method cannot consider the increase of the percentage of small-sized fishes in catches due to the allowance of low-selectivity gears in the fishery. Additionally, in the case of the pike-perch, the model does not take into account the interannual fluctuations in the stock-recruitment system. The assessment of the European perch stock can be considered to be good. However, the accuracy of CMSY is limited, and it should be used for fisheries management only in combination with other methods.

Introduction. The paper presents the results of the studies on assessing the quality of the aquatic ecosystem of a lake located within the city. The European perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) and the Gibel carp (Carassius gibelio) were used as an indicator for determining the quality of the aquatic ecosystem by the method of fluctuating asymmetry. Problem Statement. The aim of the work was to conduct monitoring with the subsequent assessment of the quality of the ecosystem of the city lake using the method of fluctuating asymmetry (hereinafter FA). Theoretical and Practical Part. The quality of the urban lake aquatic ecosystem was assessed using the FA method (indicators: the European perch (Perca fluviatilis L.), 1758 and the Gibel carp (Carassius auratus Bloch), 1783). To identify the reasons for the high PFA values, a chemical analysis (in an accredited laboratory) of the gills of the Gibel carp for heavy metals was performed. Conclusions. As a result of the research, the FA indicators values for these indicators were obtained. According to the results of a laboratory study of the content of heavy metals in the gill arches of the Gibel carp, an excess of the maximum permissible concentration of 8 out of 10 analyzed elements was revealed. It has been established that the ecosystem of the city lake Kenon is experiencing a significant anthropogenic load (5 points — the critical quality of the aquatic environment) and it continues to increase towards the deterioration of the habitat.

The purpose of the research is determination of the species composition of parasites of cyprinid and percoid fish in the reservoirs of the Moscow Canal.Materials and methods. In 2019–2020, parasitological material was collected in the spring, summer and autumn from percoid (the pike perch and European perch) and cyprinid fish (the bream, silver bream, roach, rudd and sabrefish) aged 2 to 7 years from the reservoirs of the Moscow Canal (Ikshinsky, Pestovsky, Pyalovsky and Klyazminsky Reservoirs) by the methods generally accepted in ichthyo-parasitology. To quantify the fish infection rate, we used the incidence or prevalence of infection, the intensity of infection, and the mean amplitude of the intensity of infection. We used Kabiosh index (K) to assess the species diversity of parasites. Results and discussion. The parasitological analysis results of percoids and cyprinids from the reservoirs of the Moscow Canal are presented. 34 parasite species were found in fish, which belong to nine taxonomic groups: Microsporidia, Myxosporea, Monogenea, Cestoda, Trematoda, Nematoda, Acanthocephala, Hirudinea, Crustacea. The largest number of species belongs to trematodes, the rest, taxa (mixo- and microsporidia, cestodes, nematodes, acanthocephalans, leeches and parasitic crustaceans), are represented singly. We calculated the species diversity ratio (R) of fish parasites in the reservoirs, which ranged from 0.335 to 0.575, which indicates the fauna similarity from 50 to 75%. The greatest similarity in the parasite fauna was found in the roach (R = 0.168–0.447), the least in the European perch (R = 0.447–1.0). We have identified the dominant species that are found in more than 20% of the studied fish and determine the “core” of the parasitic fauna, which included 4 parasite species of epizootic and 1 parasite species of epidemiological significance.

AbstractHigh dissolved organic carbon and low pH are often associated with elevated mercury content of fish in boreal lakes, but less is known about the fish mercury dynamics in lakes recovering from acidification stress. We measured total mercury concentration (THg) in muscle of European perch (Perca fluviatilis) and evaluated the overall correlation with environmental and growth variables in 24 boreal headwater lakes in the 2010s. We found negative correlations of length-corrected perch THg with lake pH and perch growth, but no correlation with dissolved organic carbon. The main emphasis in the present study was focused to a subset of ten lakes in southern Finland with known perch THg during severe acidification in the 1980–1990s. The comparison of perch THg concentrations in the 2010s with values determined in the 1980–1990s showed a sharp increase in most acidic lakes where the perch populations suffered from severe acid stress in the 1980s. This increase was attributed to growth condensation caused by sharp decrease in perch growth during recovery of reproduction capacity and the consequent increases in population densities of perch. Our results highlight the importance of perch growth rate and population density for understanding the variability of fish Hg in boreal headwater lakes, where recovery from acidification can lead to higher mercury concentration of fish in certain cases.

Abstract Background: Yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) larvae meal (TM), one of seven approved insect species used in aquafeeds, is a frequently investigated candidate for fish diets. Results: This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary defatted TM on production performance, serum biochemistry, nutrient digestibility, fillet traits, intestinal microbiota, and environmental impacts of perch (Perca fluviatilis). Four experimental diets, characterized by defatted TM inclusion levels of 0, 6.8, 13.5 and 20.3%, respectively, or 0, 25, 50, and 75% at the expense of fishmeal (TM0, TM25, TM50, and TM75, respectively) were fed to juvenile perch (bodyweight 20.81 ± 3.36 g, total length 117.7 ± 7.2 mm) (quadruplicated per diet) for 105 days. Inclusion levels of 6.8% or 25% fishmeal replacement by defatted TM did not show a significant effect on specific growth rate and feed conversion ratio (P > 0.05), while further levels of 13.5 and 20.3%, or 50 and 75% fishmeal replacement with defatted TM, respectively, displayed a significant delay in these indices compared to the control diet (P < 0.001). The aspartate aminotransferase activities in perch’s serum increased with increasing dietary TM (P = 0.044). Nutrient digestibility of perch exhibited TM-dose dependent (P < 0.05). Dietary defatted TM did not lead to any significant changes in the fillet composition of perch (P > 0.05). Defatted TM did not modify diversity of fish gut microbiota (Chao1 index, P = 0.742; Shannon index, P = 0.557; and observed species, P = 0.522), but significantly reduced abundance of Lactobacillus (P = 0.018) and Streptococcus (P = 0.013) while fed TM75 relative to TM0. TM-containing diets generated a comparable amount of total solid waste and solid phosphorus waste with TM0, except TM25, whereas solid nitrogen waste significantly increased with elevated TM levels (P < 0.001). Perch fed TM25 was comparable with TM0 for global warming potential, acidification, and land use (P > 0.05), whereas TM50 and TM75 exerted heavier burdens on energy use, eutrophication, and water use than TM0 (P < 0.001). Fishmeal replacement by TM significantly reduced economic fish-in fish-out (P < 0.001).Conclusion: The inclusion of 6.8% or 25% fishmeal replacement by defatted insect meal (T. molitor) in European perch diets resulted in comparable production performance but entailed heavier burdens associated with solid outputs waste and environmental impacts. The present study underlined the major bottleneck of a substantial inclusion of defatted insect meal (T. molitor) in fish diets associated with solid nitrogen waste and environmental consequences associated with one unit of farmed perch produced. Our multidisciplinary study suggested important aspects while formulating diets for fish, using insect meals regarding production performance and environmental issues.
