Psychological well-being indicates individuals’ positive psychological functioning and well-being. A growing body of literature, largely based on adults and old people, suggests that volunteering and charitable donations are related to individuals’ psychological well-being. As emerging adulthood is a vital time for lifespan development, the aim of this study is to examine the effects of volunteering and charitable donation on individuals’ psychological well-being on college students. Relying on theories of altruism and the warm-glow theory, this study estimates the relationships among hours of volunteering, amount of charitable donations, and psychological well-being from 1,871 Chinese college students. The linear regression results indicate that students’ hours of volunteering and the amount of charitable donations in the past year were positively associated with their psychological well-being. Volunteering, compared to charitable donations, had a slightly stronger association with psychological well-being. This study provides a rationale for academic institutions to integrate social service activities into the curriculum as a potential tool to promote students’ psychological well-being.

Objective. To assess age and sex differences in sleep disorders as risk factors and markers of hypertension (HTN) in 18–39-year old people with normal body weight. Design and methods. We performed a cross-sectional study based on the internet survey of 18–39-year-old people with body mass index of 18–25 kg/m2  (n = 2094). The unvalidated questionnaire included 42 questions about various types of sleep disorders and sleep-associated symptoms (0 — never, 1 — rarely, 2 — from time to time, 3 — quite often, 4 — almost all the time). Results. The probability of detecting HTN in young men with normal body weight is higher than in women with similar characteristics (p < 0,001). In women, the probability of detecting HTN decreases, starting with the youngest category (18–24 years old), reaching a minimum in the age group 30–34 years old and then starts to increase. By the age of 40, the indicators for men and women become similar. Based on a multivariate analysis, the risk of HTN in young people with normal body weight is associated with both gender and age (p = 0,022). The contribution of gender to age-related changes in sleep complaints was found for snoring (p < 0,001), sleep apnea (p < 0,001), early awakenings (p = 0,002). The contribution of gender was also noted for various symptoms — daytime sleepiness, some symptoms of restless legs syndrome (RLS), anxiety, depression, leg cramps (p < 0,001) and nocturnal heartburn (p < 0,001). The contribution of age was noted for snoring (p < 0,001), sleep apnea (p < 0,001), early awakenings (p < 0,001) and for a variety of symptoms — daytime sleepiness, some symptoms of RLS, anxiety, nocturnal cough, and nocturnal choking. Conclusions. Our data can be considered when developing measures for HTN prevention, can be recommended for clinical use, as well as in subsequent clinical studies using validated questionnaires.

Epidemiological studies concerning the new coronavirus disease called COVID-19 show that elderly and old people are more susceptible to symptomatic, severe course of the disease, and also to death as its consequence. These age groups frequently suffer from associated, aging-related, chronic inflammatory diseases, in the case of COVID-19 described as co-morbidities. This paper describes the mechanisms of infection by SARS-CoV-2 virus and the development of acute COVID-19 and of its chronic form called long COVID, as well as the participation of various components of the immune system in the development and course of  this disease in the context of changing properties (aging) of both the innate and adaptive immunity in the elderly. In particular, the role of two key phenomena occurring in the aging immune system and precipitating or at least facilitating the aging-related diseases including COVID-19, namely the immunosenescence and inflammaging, is discussed.

In this article, I discuss a letter from three high-ranking officials of the Cirebon Sultanate to Thomas Stamford Raffles. The letter written on 25 Syaban 1226 AH (September 11, 1811 AD) is a collection of the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia and is coded ID-ANRI K66a, File 3584, Folio 683. Through the letter, they the letter, in essence, they asked for a position to Raffles. As the “old people” in the Cirebon Sultanate, they felt worthy and could occupy certain positions which they submitted themselves to Raffles. In this article, the letter firstly was studied by using the philology theory that contains the method of manuscript study (codicology) and the method of text study (textology). Furthermore, the manuscript content was dialogued to the historical fact in the Cirebon Sultanate, especially in the context of the British plan to occupy Java, so that we obtained a complete understanding of the context of writing the letter. The result shows that when the letter was written, the British had not fully controlled Java. The three high-ranking officials of the Cirebon Sultanate only took advantage of the situation because they knew that power in Java would soon transfer to the British hands. However, until the end of the British interregnum period in 1816, there is no evidence that the request was granted by Raffles.

Abstract We examined short-term fluctuations of subjective age with data obtained from 123 young-old (Mage = 67.19 years) and 47 old-old adults (Mage = 86.59 years) who reported their momentary subjective age six times a day over seven consecutive days as they were going about their everyday lives. Participants felt younger on a large majority of occasions, and 25% of the total variability in subjective age could be attributed to within-person variation. Those with younger trait subjective ages exhibited larger moment-to-moment variation, while chronological age did not impact variability. Furthermore, we investigated relationships between within-day fluctuations of subjective age and daily cortisol fluctuations. Our findings extend the literature on subjective age by showing that how old people feel can vary on a momentary basis, that state and trait components of subjective age are related, and that fluctuations in subjective age are related to biomarkers of stress.
