Introduction/Objective. Contemporary tendencies suggest that probiotics can significantly reduce the prevalence of caries in children, so it can be considered that they have a positive effect on general and oral health. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) is a probiotic culture of particular importance in preventive dentistry. The aim was to assess the effects of consumption of probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG on the dental plaque accumulation in children with mixed dentition. Methods. Research included 90 children with mixed dentition (5-12 years old). First study group consumed 200 ml of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG-enriched yogurt (B-Activ LGG, Dukat) daily for a period of 14 days, while the remaining 30 formed the second study group who consumed 200 ml of yogurt (Jogurt 1,5% milk fat, Imlek) with manually added powder from probiotic capsule (Wayaforte LGG capsule, Medis) daily for14 days. The control group consisted of 30 children who had regular diet during examination period. Silness-L?e plaque index and saliva pH (pH-Fix-0-14, Macherey-Nagel) were determined at baseline and also upon intervention completion. Results. An increase in pH values was observed in both study groups. In general sample, there is a significant decrease of mean plaque index values (p ? 0.001). Both study groups had significant decrease of mean plaque index values on the baseline and after 14 days consumption of yogurt. In the control group the number of subjects with decrease plaque index values did not correlate and no association was found. Conclusion. Consistent consumption of LGG culture-enriched yogurt inhibits dental film accumulation and promotes saliva pH increase in children with mixed dentition.

Glass surfaces, although the first to be used for culturing ex vivo adherent cells, are not the perfect substrates for this purpose. Today, plastics dominate these applications, but in light of the global trend to reduce the use of synthetic polymers, it is reasonable to consider a return to glass vessels with coatings for these purposes. The ideal surface for cell growth is one that simulates the composition and structure of the mainly protein-based intercellular matrix. The work presented here shows a new idea of preparing porous protein coatings on glass using biosynthesis. The process utilizes the colonization of the gold nanoparticle-coated glass surface with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG bacteria, followed by permeabilization (using ethanol) of their membrane and partial thermal degradation (at 160 °C in vacuum) of the surface-bound protein components of these microorganisms. It results in a development of coating on the glass that promotes mammalian cell growth, which has been preliminary confirmed using Vero cells. Subsequent steps in the formation of coating components were documented by reflectance ultraviolet and visible spectra and infrared spectroscopy. The presence of microorganisms and mammalian cells was confirmed using scanning electron and optical microscopy and crystalline violet staining.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of three strains of probiotics, these being Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. Lactis BB-12 and Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745, on the body weight, animal performances and blood parameters of rabbits (male and female) of the ITELV2006 strain. The supplementation of the feed of the rabbits with the three probiotic strains allowed observing positive effects on most of the biochemical and haematological parameters investigated during a period of 60 days (30 days of supplementation and 30 days without treatment). Further, there was a significant improvement in the body weight of the rabbits at the end of the experiment. The effect of the three probiotics investigated in this trial was found to be related to the sex of the rabbits and to the intake period (duration). Ultimately, these findings raise the possibility of using probiotics to investigate in an in-depth and specific manner based on fixed factors such as the strain, the gender and age of the animals, the main underlying mechanisms and effects, which would allow achieving optimal and adapted health benefits and sustainable production. In the context of animal production, it is worth investigating in a targeted study the effect of the three strains on muscle growth and development and finding evidence of the possible consequences on meat quality traits of the rabbits supplemented with probiotics.
