One of the major challenges faced by the current society is developing disaster management strategies to minimize the effects of catastrophic events. Disaster planning and strategy development phases of this urgency require larger amounts of cooperation among communities or individuals in society. Social networks have also been playing a crucial role in the establishment of efficient disaster management planning. This article proposes a hierarchical decision-making framework that would assist in analyzing two imperative information flow processes (innovation diffusion and opinion formation) in social networks under the consideration of community detection. The proposed framework was proven to capture the heterogeneity of individuals using cognitive behavior models and evaluate its impact on diffusion speed and opinion convergence. Moreover, the framework demonstrated the evolution of communities based on their inter-and intracommunication. The simulation results with real social network data suggest that the model can aid in establishing an efficient disaster management policy using social sensing and delivery.

The planning and development of the university strategy is closely linked to the university’s current performance, key priorities, and capabilities. A systematic literature review of factors that influence decision-making for strategy development has been applied in this research. To determine the external factors that influence strategic decision-making for universities nowadays there has been chosen a structure from the PESTLE analysis. The systematic literature review was limited to only higher education factor analysis. Based on the literature review, the authors have developed an approach for strategic direction evaluation and ongoing key performance indicator analysis. The approach is based on the Importance-Performance Matrix–IPA and developed further to include a comprehensive analysis of the strategic directions, organizational sources, and capabilities. An assessment of the university’s main strategic priorities with influencing factor analysis can be done using the developed approach adapted by the authors. It integrates the principles of resource-based strategy, key stakeholder engagement and creating shared value in the strategy development process. The adapted method was used in the 3rd generation university strategy development. The research contributes to the literature on a systematic approach development in the strategy evaluation process. This article puts emphasis on the resource-based view and key stakeholder involvement in the evaluation process.

Research carried out to identify, analyze, and orientation of the mapping strategy to support the development of tourism destinations empowering local communities and area-based tourism as its leading sector. The approach used is qualitative and quantitative mix techniques. The results showed that developments rating in Sinjai can be seen from 1) traveller, 2) traveller destination, 3) traveller activities, 4) of accommodation used, 5) traveller trips, 6) average expenditure, 7) characteristics of the traveller market. From the description of the results of the study has increased every year. This is because adequate infrastructure increasingly supported sights. The mapping showed an increase and expansion of the traveller area each year. Increased traveller destinations and the availability of adequate infrastructure provide the opportunity for local communities to take part in the tourism industry that contributes to the empowerment of local communities. The government's efforts in promoting the expansion of development opportunities in various sectors of the tourism sector strongly support the improvement of the economy and social life at the local community level.

The energy efficiency of a power plant is largely determined by the vibrations of bearings that hold the shaft rotating at high speed which need to be critically controlled. This study presents the relative vibration modeling of a shaft bearing that is installed in a 660 MW supercritical steam turbine system. The operational data in raw form after being cleaned using machine learning based visualization and extensive data processing helped in training and validation of SVM and ANN models which are then compared by external validation tests. The model with best results is then used for the simulations of constructed operating scenarios. The ANN has been further tested for the complete operational load range (353 MW to 662 MW) which predicted the reduction in relative vibrations. Moreover, the validated ANN model has been used to develop many strategies of vibration reduction which helped in achieving more than 4% reduction in relative vibrations. Subsequently, an operational strategy that predicts a significant reduction in the bearing vibration levels is selected. For confirmation of the accuracy of prediction by ANN process model, the selected strategy has been used with the actual power plant. This assures the significant reduction of bearing vibration less than the alarm limit.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of literatures and previous studies on the relationship between strategic planning and performance and propose conceptual designs and hypotheses using multidimensional constructs to advance the understanding of this relationship, contribute to existing debates in the extant literature and make recommendations. Design/methodology/approach A semi-systematic literature and previous studies (studied by various groups of researchers within diverse disciplines) review approach has been used in this paper to contribute to the debate on whether strategic planning affects performance and how. Using more recent knowledge about the strategic planning concept, the semi-systematic review looked at how research within strategic planning has progressed over the past five decades and its relationship with performance. Findings In the past, the strategic planning performance relationship has been treated as a black box and this paper proposes that the conceptualisation of a number of constructs and the inclusion of strategy implementation will help converting the black box into a white box. To strengthen support for the debate regarding the relationship between strategic planning and performance this paper proposes a further conceptual/operational design, mathematical expressions and hypotheses to be tested empirically in further studies. The proposal provides a conceptualisation of the major constructs (strategy development; strategy implementation; and performance), and the use of strategy implementation as a mediator and/or as a moderator in the planning performance relationship. Research limitations/implications This study is limited due to fact that the findings have not been tested empirically, it is not a cross-sectional and/or a longitudinal research and only a limited number of dimensions of strategy development and strategy implementation have been used. In addition, the approach used is a semi-systematic review followed by quantitative thinking, which, in turn, typically assumes the relevance of and a warrant mainly from a positivist epistemology. Originality/value The proposed design developed in this paper ensures that core issues in planning performance relationships research are addressed. Furthermore, the inclusion of strategy implementation in planning performance relationship studies means that the whole chain of activities in the strategy process is being considered, drawing a complete and comprehensive conclusion on how strategic planning affects an organisation’s performance. In addition, by separating strategy implementation and by not combining it with formulation/formation activities will theoretically and analytically help to evaluate the importance or role of each stage of the strategy process. Moreover, the conceptualisation and operationalisation of the key concepts as multidimensional constructs contribute to past research gaps. Finally, this paper provides some clarity to many contradictory findings concerning the strategic planning and performance relationship.

This research focuses on the contribution of human resource managers to activate and develop the potential of middle managers in a strategy development process. Precisely, the attention is directed on specific practices used by human resource managers and their effects on strategic roles of middle managers in emerging market companies. A survey questionnaire was distributed to 350 CEOs of large Tunisian companies participating in the Industrial Upgrading Program. The results of the application of structural equation methods show the existence and significant and positive effects of specific human resource practices on strategic roles of middle managers. Participation in the decisions and team/group incentives are used by middle managers and influence all strategic roles of middle managers. However, pre-employment training is used towards middle managers, but it has no effect on all strategic roles of middle managers.

This study aims to research the mediating effect of customer reliability in the relationship of the beauty professionals' communication styles and the intention to revisit to increase the reliability and revisitation of the customers who use beauty services. A self-administered survey with 23 questions related to general characteristics, communication styles, customer reliability, and intention to revisit was given to 413 customers. Through SPSS 20.0, frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, regression analysis, and mediation regression analysis were performed. The result showed that communication style has 3 factors: cooperation type, control type, and professional type and that the customer reliability and the intention to revisit drew single factors, respectively. And all the effects of the beauty professionals' communication style on the customer reliability, the customer reliability on the intention to revisit, and the communication style on the intention to revisit appeared to have a positive effect. Also, the customer reliability showed the mediating effect in the relationship between cooperation type and the intention to revisit. And in the relationship of control type, professional type, and intention to revisit, by the full mediation effect, the customer reliability appeared to work as an essential variable in the relationship of communication style and intention to revisit. Based on this result, the author expects that this study can help expand the training for the communication style that fits the beauty service environment and create profits with the competitiveness reinforcement by the strategy development of proper service training and marketing for beauty professionals.
