AbstractQuantum mechanics allows distribution of intrinsically secure encryption keys by optical means. Twin-field quantum key distribution is one of the most promising techniques for its implementation on long-distance fiber networks, but requires stabilizing the optical length of the communication channels between parties. In proof-of-principle experiments based on spooled fibers, this was achieved by interleaving the quantum communication with periodical stabilization frames. In this approach, longer duty cycles for the key streaming come at the cost of a looser control of channel length, and a successful key-transfer using this technique in real world remains a significant challenge. Using interferometry techniques derived from frequency metrology, we develop a solution for the simultaneous key streaming and channel length control, and demonstrate it on a 206 km field-deployed fiber with 65 dB loss. Our technique reduces the quantum-bit-error-rate contributed by channel length variations to <1%, representing an effective solution for real-world quantum communications.

Vivid, saturated structural colors are conspicuous and important features of many animals. A rich diversity of three-dimensional periodic photonic nanostructures is found in the chitinaceous exoskeletons of invertebrates. Three-dimensional photonic nanostructures have been described in bird feathers, but they are typically quasi-ordered. Here, we report bicontinuous single gyroid β-keratin and air photonic crystal networks in the feather barbs of blue-winged leafbirds (Chloropsis cochinchinensis sensu lato), which have evolved from ancestral quasi-ordered channel-type nanostructures. Self-assembled avian photonic crystals may serve as inspiration for multifunctional applications, as they suggest efficient, alternative routes to single gyroid synthesis at optical length scales, which has been experimentally elusive.

In this paper, we present the results of the study of the statistics of pulse energy fluctuations in a Raman laser under optical pump by the multimode nanosecond pulses. A system of coupled differential equations for slowly varying envelopes of the pump field and first three Stokes lines was integrated numerically with taking into account spatial inhomogeneity of the pump beam, spontaneous noise, and optical feedback. Data of the numerical simulation revealed a sharp increase in the fluctuation amplitude in the nonlinear regime of Raman frequency conversion when the optical length of the Raman cavity was matched with the cavity length of the multimode pump laser. At a mean 1st Stokes conversion efficiency of 3.5–3.8 %, the calculations showed an increase in the coefficient of variation (CV) of a random value from 9 % to 118 %. In the linear regime of Raman frequency conversion, when the conversion efficiency was 0.2–0.03 %, a further increase in the CV value up to 270–500 % was predicted. It is also numerically shown that the fluctuation statistics under the conditions of the cavity length matching is essentially non-Gaussian and described by the L-type probability density distributions (PDDs) with long tails and maxima located near zero. The numerical data were quantitatively confirmed by an experiment for a Raman laser on a barium nitrate crystal operated near the Raman threshold, when the 1st Stokes conversion efficiency did not exceed 0.3 %. A Raman cavity was formed by two flat mirrors providing a double-pass pump configuration. The Raman laser was excited by the linearly polarized frequency-doubled radiation of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser generating multimode pulses with a duration of 7–8 ns. A Raman laser operating regime characterized by the hyperexponential PDDs with CVs reaching 480 %, which is 2–2.5 times higher than those observed earlier for the single-pass conditions of stimulated Raman scattering, was realized.

Rotating solid-state homogeneous isotropic dielectric without dispersion in the accompanying rotation of the reference frame turns out to be an inhomogeneous anisotropic medium due to the influence of two competing physical mechanisms: the inhomogeneity of free space caused by rotation and entrainment of light by the moving medium. In a rotating dielectric in the geometric optics approximation the eikonal equation and the corresponding system of ordinary differential equations in characteristic form are obtained. The solutions of the equations with the calculated parameters determined using of the first integrals of the system are pairs "opposite “R-ray trajectories and f - phase trajectories fronts. A formula for the intensity of a light pulse propagating along an arbitrary R-trajectories was obtained. "Oncoming “trajectories of both types do not have common points and are shifted to opposite sides of a straight line between end points. Their structural parameters (minimum distance to the axis of rotation, the length of the arc, the region of determination by the azimuthal coordinate, the optical length, etc.) change under the influence of both physical mechanisms, depending on the speed of rotation. Closed optical paths in the RRF for the relay network and for the two-mirror Fabry-Perot resonator in generating laser can be created using two types of mirrors that are adaptable to the frequency of rotation which normals to the reflecting surfaces must have certain different angles with the ray vectors and wavefronts of radiation arriving at the reflector. The Sagnac effect is a consequence inhomogeneity (deformation) of free space along the azimuthal coordinate, and its value is the result of the competing influence of both physical mechanisms.

We demonstrate an approach for improving the colour gamut of bottom-emission organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) through micro-cavity structure embedded cathodes. The devices with micro-cavity structure embedded cathodes showed an improved colour gamut of 91.5% (National Television System Committee (NTSC)), 95.8% (Adobe RGB), and 129.2% (sRGB), compared to those of the devices without micro-cavity structure embedded cathodes—59.2% (NTSC), 62.0% (Adobe RGB), 83.6% (sRGB). In addition, the performance of red, green, and blue devices are also investigated depending on the optical length of the micro-cavity structure.
